Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski lifts now marked on Google Maps

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Apologies if anyone's already pointed this out but I've just noticed that Google Maps now has ski lifts, and their names, marked which I think is quite cool! You can only see the track of the route on Map view but the labels are still there in satellite view.

It's not limited to one country but only bigger resorts are included. I checked the resorts I know quite well (Cham, St. Anton, Dolomites & EK) and they're all there and seem to be in the right place but, for example, Les Contamines isn't (Although St. Gervais/Megeve is...)

Anyway, could be very useful when going to a new resort - just need to accept the data roaming charges!

Yep, I saw this too whilst scouting the sella ronda, very good when you're checking apartment locations etc.

yup. a few lifts are missing (at least one on Sella Ronda is), and a few lifts are not yet named in gmaps (some are new lifts this year, so understandable).

OpenStreetMap has lifts marked too for some resorts and in some "views".

Sella Ronda is one of the resorts with "StreetView" too Smile snowHead

Seems to cover North America more than Europe, unsurprisingly. But still very cool and I especially like the overlay with the satellite imagery

wikimapia even better... has direction of travel on them
(was going to try to edit that lift in mapmaker - edit: grrr not possible, not enough privileges even to suggest an amendment)

They're on for Les Deux Alpes (a few missing) too but not Alpe D'Huez.

Les Arcs/La Plagne lifts are marked as well.

Pitty they don't map them on Google Earth, would be nice to see them in 3D

Nor the English ones, but someone did put the LDSC huts in there.

Might have to add some more stuff to OpenStreetMap, if Google won't let me.

maps cache to the phone anyway Wink
don't need data connection

Free wifi at several lifts in Sella Ronda, Zillertal, and other resorts. And in some gondola cabins too I believe.

Last time i used one, a paper map didn't have a flashing spot provided by GPS telling me where exactly on the map I was standing. rolling eyes

Les Arcs/La Plagne lifts are marked as well.

But sadly very out of date. I might feel a bit peeved when I arrive at the Gollet lift and find it was taken out 3 or 4 years ago, or indeed the col des Fret chair or deux tetes drag.
These are also shown on the IGN topological maps of the area so you cannot really blame google.
I have used the IGN maps with the view ranger software on my mobile phone and you buy them and download in the comfort of your own home. But beware the phone battery goes pretty quickly when using GPS so you still cannot beat a paper map and compass

Don't forget about openpistemap.org!

Re data charges - just pay for the "Eurotraveller" or whatever package - it's about a tenner to take your home subscription with you, so you can use as much as you like (subject to your home package). That doesn't apply to North America, where you just get robbed blind on the data charges.

I like maprika for my piste maps.
