Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Best hotel in Serre Chevalier please?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi All

Skied in Serre Che quite a few times and loved the skiing but never actually stayed there. Whenever I saw the villages that line the bottom of the valley they never filled me with the desire to stay there probably because I have been spoilt with Austria over the years.

Have since looked at various brochures, searched online, read trip advisor reviews but have found nothing that gives me the confidence to go ahead. I am not after luxury I am just after quality which to me means no tired décor or tatty furnishings inside or out, spotlessly clean, well prepared and properly cooked food (doesn't have to be fancy), plenty of hot water at any time, rooms larger than the ubiquitous shoe box and not too far from the lifts. All of this to me is just basic stuff that every hotel should have at the very least but sadly this is not the case.

So can anyone help please?

Btw, when I say hotel I mean hotel.

idkwia, Stayed in the Vauban and the hotel de Paris but both many years ago. I found both fine but you may think the décor a little tired. I love Serre Che but usually self cater. I have to say I generally reckon Austria has higher accommodation standards than France.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks for your thoughts. There is no comparison between the standard of accommodation in France to that of Austria.

idkwia, Hotel Alliey in Monetier-les-Bains is fairly good, and Monetier has the best village atmosphere. All of the villages do have some old and atmospheric places. and there are a couple of refurbished hotels opening this winter. Grand Aigle used to be a schools place but I think is opening as a 4* spa hotel in Villeneuve. Plein Sud in Chantemerle has good food and There is also the Boule de Neige which is in the old part of Chantemerle. Personally I would choose the Alliey. Many of these aren't in tour op brochures though, but I think the Plein Sud is.

How hard can it be?
There's a number of review sites that are quite dependable. You need to search and read a bit of course...

for instance these 2 from tripadvisor
http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g1152197-d1367918-Reviews-Les_Marmottes_a_Serre_Chevalier-Serre_Chevalier_Hautes_Alpes_Provence.html
http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g1152197-d1419296-Reviews-Hotel_La_Maison_du_Bez-Serre_Chevalier_Hautes_Alpes_Provence.html

the whole list with reviews
http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotels-g1152197-Serre_Chevalier_Hautes_Alpes_Provence-Hotels.html

Or these 2 in Monetier, reviews from zoover, use google translate where necessary
http://www.zoover.nl/frankrijk/provence-alpes-cote-dazur/serre-chevalier-chantemerle/residence-ladret/aparthotel
http://www.zoover.nl/frankrijk/provence-alpes-cote-dazur/serre-chevalier-le-monetier-les-bains/leurope-et-des-bains/hotel

in my own experience, on zoover a score of 7 is so-so, anything 8 and above is fine, 9 is really special
