Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

waynos, Nope, the visibility was dire and it really was not worth it. But tomorrow should be better. It did not stop snowing all day and we all looked like snowmen by the end of the afternoon. But if it continues overnight things should improve again. Not good for real off-piste though due to the wet layer underneath the fresh stuff. I imagine they will raise the Avi warning level but that won't stop the idiots thinking it is their "right" to ski where the hell they like! Loads of "all the gear and no idea" folks out playing today.

So... a busy, busy, busy day in Zauchensee....

I popped out for a few hours in for the fresh stuff. About 11am started the journey up from Altenmarkt in the van.
3/4 of the way up the road was being 'managed' by a hi-vis man... basically they have totally run out of car park spaces (probably due to building an unfinished hotel in the middle of one car park... but not building a new car park).

So after a bit of jiggery-pokery 'going to pick up my kids'.. .moving barriers and parking where they are about to build the stands for the WC, we did a bit of that skiing thing.

Bluebird day.
Over 30cm fresh on a good base. Avi warning was a level 2 today but with a strange scary reading report. The off piste was in great shape... but a bit busy. really had to hunt out for any fresh tracks.
Good fun though (as usual) and rarely thing for probelms with roots etc...

Pistes/lifts were busy but no more than any other new year (i'm guessing more people are driving there). 5 to 8 min wait for the lifts around the arena.

On the Strims side (Tauernkarbahn on the left of the valley as you drive up). The off piste was fantastic... this is a bit more of a 'local' route so was not skied out at all in places... lots of fresh tracks!

Off the back of this lift is Blue 11 to which the right hand side is a nice easy pow area now names "Nelly's Run" in tribute to Mr.Waynos' new addition to his ski team of a family!

Congrats waynos!!!

This is the percentage of open lifts and pistes.
Take into consideration that there are a handful of permanently closed lifts (old T bars and world-cup starts) across the area!
Pretty standard season really.

We're heading to Hinterthal in the Hochkönig on Saturday for the first time. Should get my finger out and organise a hire car or transfer, come to think of it, or I may be seeing 2014 in from the doghouse. We've been to the Grand Massif a few times over the past two years and are looking forward to seeing how it compares. My initial understanding from pals who visit regularly is that the infrastructure is great and that the local costs are lower than the GM. And that I need to stay clear of any games that involve a hammer, a piece of wood and some shots... :0)

Take a look at Forstau/Fageralm for peace and quiet. If you don't have your transport you are tied to either the railway (Radstadt or Altenmarkt have stations) and the buses. You could find that Zauchensee/Flachauwinkel give you a good variety of slopes and tree skiing.

Chick,
I'm guessin gyou have done thr 4 mountains attached to Schladming? (Hauser Kaibling, Schaldming, Hochwurzen, Reiteralm/Pichl).
If not then head over to the Hochwurzen Reiteralm area!

Otherwise getting to Flachau is a bit of a schlepp on public transprt.
Give a taxi company in Schaldming a ring and see how much they woul doffer you a return journey for, that'll be the quickest and best option as you'll have time to enjoy the apres!

Went to Reiteralm today.

All lifts open and all pistes too. The black off the summit is 'closed' but I think that is an ability issue rather than a snow one!

The pistes are now very, very compact. The area is snow-making again as the temps have dropped and are now consistently low.
This makes the 'dry' snow that just doesn't stick to the base by the afternoon, producing pockets of hard packed skiddy stuff (plus boiler plate in a couple of places) followed by non-compacted attempt at a mogul.

This is the busiest week of the year and so the pistes are getting a lot of abuse but they are holding out for those with sharp edges!
At Reiteralm there was no grass/mud etc.. showing anywhere down to valley.

The best skiing today was at 13:30 (lunchtime) going down to valley (where most people assume will be crap)... only 31 people using the whole piste!

Fresh snow would be well received but i'd say it isn't 'needed' for at least another 2 weeks or so!

Incidentally, I took my whole family sledging last night up at the Hochnössleralm…….. Skullie Shocked it was truly an experience, there was utter carnage, people losing control, and their sledges all over the place, sheet black ice, I ended up walking the 4 kms down as most of them were too terrified to get on the sledges, it was absolutely lethal. If anyone comes out here and is planning a nights sledging, please, get some good insurance and bring a spare pair of underpants…or three

8c plus a very strong Föhn at the moment in the Gastein valley.

Conditions were not great before this latest storm. Even Sportgastein has very little skiable off-piste and not all pistes open.

We drove through the Gastein Valley last night en Route from Mallnitz. After great skiing in Mallnitz (with full snow cover to Valley level), as we left it was dumping snow.

However, 12 minutes, 1 Tunnel and one train ride later we were surprised to arrive in a green Gastein valley, where it was peeing with rain.

The good news is that they are doing a remarkable job and the runs to the Valley are open. St Johann further down the road however has far more snow down to Valley level due to its orientation.
