Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

What a hilarious article. It starts with a headline that has 4*12 = 52 then gets funnier.

I particularly like this bit

After complaining about UK TV viewers buying a TV licence

"Foreign viewers are not offered live streamed content, radio or an identical catch-up service to that which is available in Britain."

In other words, as any student would tell you, exactly what you get in the UK if you do not buy a TV licence. But you have to pay for it.

I am not sure how the price compares with what the UK proxy servers charge you for appearing to access the internet from inside the UK, but I suspect the BBC is undercutting this market.

I think I pay just over a tenner a month for a VPS. That's mainly for other purposes (web servers, irc server...), but a side effect of that is that it will happily access iPlayer, and also get round the GEMA cartel block on about 60% of youtube (ie anything that sounds like it might have music in it). iPlayer radio seems to be free overseas, although I've only listened to a few things (mainly Fags, Mags and Bags).
I'd pay a tenner a month to get the full set of BBC/ITV/C4/C5 channels that are generally free to air, although they all seem to fall off a satellite straight in to my TV that has built in DVB-S receiver.

andy, I get it all free on my PC and iPad using FilmOn and another app - if one is playing up the other is OK. Fine for the hotel the nights I'm not at home. As boredsurfin surmises, I am one of the ones with a sky Card as I'm too far east for it just to fall into my lap. Not a multiroom one though, I use a proxy address in the Channel Islands! Toofy Grin

If you are a licence fee payer is it possible to get the services overseas ? If not it should be.

Yeah 80cm dish is quite sizeable, works here, but signal drops out in heavy rain or snow. Not a problem when it quite happily comes thru the intawebz line as well.
Had a $ky sub too, but binned it, since 99% of what I watched was on the "free" channels. And the 1% was Mythbusters etc. when channel hopping with naff all else on.

Crazy the efforts they go to with Geo-IP blocking nonsense when it's so easy to bypass. And it's quite enjoyable flicking V's at GEMA.

Oh and if you fancy a gamble...
With a UK phone, when 3G roaming, you'll find that your IP address is the same as it always is back home. Hence access to iPlayer etc. exactly as if you were in UK.
Friend tried it with a company provided corporate phone on some corporate contract, and the bill was the exact same £50/month that is always is, after a week of watching UK telly in Lanzarote on the tethered iPad.
Retail customers might get royally screwed though, and the €50 max limit is only applied for EU roaming.

andy, having problems flicking Vs at the GEMA as I need my IP to be recognised for my VPN connection for work! I've tried a couple of apps that say they can get arround the problem but so far they have proved singularly unsuccessful Sad I'll try again later this week when I get home and fire up the home PC again, but I suspect they will fail again and be removed.

CBA to set up a UK proxy so if there is something I desperately want to catch up on I'll log into Ex-Pat Shield of an evening, but I need to reboot the 'puter afterwards to clean out all the irritating adverts and pop-ups associated with it. I will have to see if it works now I have Ad-Block installed. Toofy Grin For live sports like the lions and cricket I usually use a P2P set-up and opt for one of the South African or New Zealand providers as the commentators are way more informed than the Sky people. alternatively I pick up the Sky feed and turn the volume off and play 5 Live in the background Laughing

Haha yep used to do the 5 Live trick in Holland. Now use it when F1 is live on RTL. TV delay relative to the radio is not too bad, but you do get a 1sec warning of a crash, or a goal, or a wicket, etc.

The wall socket in our apartment building here in the south of France offers every resident BBC 1 and BBC 2 as standard (along with some German channels). Have seen this before in French self-catered tourist apartments so must be fairly easy for them to do.

Also pay for a VPN at around 50$ per year but that's mostly to access Ukrainian drawf-goat p0rn.

torrent - within 10 minutes of showing for top programmes.
Friends in US and Bulgaria will be watching Dr Who before the Brits that have just watched it have even made a cup of tea.

There's one way to cut down on such piracy... show such popular programmes worldwide on the same day (or next day if its US show in EU), not 6 months later.

Don't know what this is but its not available here. Here you can pay for BBC Canada which is crap, no decent shows at all just rubbish. So this looks like a good deal.

Idris, the porn you mean?

I agree, it doesn't do *any* harm to not have access to UK channels, it is 95% crap but that's the great thing about the VOD services online. If you time it right there are ridiculously cheap VPN services out there allowing one to access services in any country. I've been a subscriber to HideMyAss for a few years now and can't fault it, even works on my mobile. Only realised this summer though that they have a 'summer sale' where subs are half price so that's clearly the best time to buy; worked out at 12 months for about £2 a month I think.

Available on my friendly torrent download 30 min after the show has finished + Dr Who, otherwise there really isn't any UK telly I miss.
