Some of you may recall that Jonathan Bell, in another thread, mentioned that he was thinking about running a "return to skiing after injury". Through PM to Jonathan I have managed to get some advance details and wanted to share them with SnowHeads who might be interested. I am definitely going and it would be great if any others who have been sharing their tales of woe and recovery could go too, if ready. It'll be like an offline meetup but without the drink (or as much...)!
Post here if you are thinking about going
Details:
16th November at Hemel Snowcentre 10:00 - 16:00. Skiers should have been red run and above ability. Maximum 12 -16 people
Anyone who wants to come will have to be assessed by the Wimbledon Clinics physio to make sure those who want to go are ready. He will also give a ski specific programme to carry out until the day. Anyone who is interested should try and see James Vickers ( the physio) at Wimbledon in the next two or three weeks so they have time to deal with niggles and strength. James has worked at Olympics level and is a very accomplished skier. I think he is going to do evening appointments
On the day it will be Warren Smith's team plus Jonathan Bell and the physio (both are giving their time free). There is also a sports psychologist as an addition if anyone is really petrified. This would be an extra - these are 1:1s and are usually up to three or four sessions. More details from Jonathan
Injury types will probably be mostly will be post op ACLs (6 months post-op, but Jonathan is happy to answer queries by email if anyone is unsure) but achilles tendon, knee replacement and tibial plateau fractured (that'll be me then) are also catered for.
It would normally be £229, £199 if booked before end of Sept but Jonathan is happy for that discounted price to be extended to any Snowheads beyond that but you do need to commit fairly soon so they can be sure you will be ready. The price includes assessment with the physio in Wimbledon, the day with Warren Smith's team at Hemel ( entrance, kit etc incl).
There are already some of Jonathan's patients interested so if you are interested you need to contact Jonathan pronto. Best contact is bell@wimbledonclinics.co.uk . Website is wimbledonclinics.co.uk
I don't know what the booking and payment procedure is, but I expect it will be on the website soon. if you are interested then I suggest you email Jonathan to express interest.

yorkshirelad, I guess he's busy being a knee surgeon. You could call the clinic? Having said that, the details are as I've set out above - I got the info directly from Jonathan. I'm going to contact the clinic on Monday to get an appointment with the physio. Would be great to see you there ....

What a great day! Many thanks to Jonathan Bell for putting on a great event, and to his physio James Vickers for making sure that the participants were in good shape to get back to skiing. Also many thanks to Phil Hopper from the Warren Smith Ski Academy for putting us through our paces but in a way which was sympathetic to our various knee injuries.
We were on the snow for 4-5 hours, skiing as much as we were comfortable with - I didn't want to stop but common sense prevailed! The rest of the group (8 of us all together) appeared to be Jonathan Bell's patients (I'm not) but I really felt part of the group -all lovely, friendly people who were just as pleased as me to be back on skis - everyone did really well.
If Jonathan Bell runs this again (as opposed to/in addition to his regular trips to Verbier) I would highly recommend this as a great pre-season confidence builder. I'm now so looking forward to this season; I know the early part is still rehab but I have the confidence to ski!

holidayloverxx,
Thank you, i had a fantastic day at our Return From Injury Ski Day. It is a huge pleasure to take someone from the earliest stages of injury and actually be there when they get back onto skiis.
Welldone on a great effort. Thanks to James Vickers our physio, Phil Hopper of Warren Smith Ski Academy and the rest of my team at Wimbledon Clinics.

Brilliant.
Next time you lose 2 Euro be tempted to let it go - I did drop a 2 Euro coin under the seat on a crowded train the other month and rather than a undignified crawl under the seat between peoples' shins I thought of you and refrained.

Sorry about an obvious direct plug but I have a number of my own patients booked on this and am very happy to do what ever we can to help anyone nervous about skiing after injury or surgery. We have some free places.
You'll see most of detail above but we have a day at Hemel with myself, James Vickers ( our specialist ski physio) and Phil Hopper from Warren Smith Ski Academy.
All happening 22 November. If you are interested you will need to get on with it as you'll need to be assessed by James ASAP so we can be absolutely sure you have fully rehabbed. Anyone who has had an injury, surgery or just nervous about getting back on skiis with an arthritic knee is welcome.
If you want some more detail pm me and leave your email and I'll get back to you.

One of the best work days of my year.
A great pleasure to see some determination to get back to skiing result in success.
https://www.facebook.com/wimbledonclinics.
If you have been injured and want to get back skiing here are a few tips.
-Get the injury treated properly.
-Commit to, and, complete the rehab - it's hard.
-Service your kit and get new boots if the old ones are past it- modern boots allow much more ankle flex which should protect the knees.
-Set you self up for success by being careful not to put to much pressure on your self the first few times out. Think about who you ski with, the condition of the snow and weather (Bluebird good, White out bad)
-Avoid the horrendous home run at the end of the day by leaving early or getting the lift down.
-On the first few days do not ski until you feel really fatigued. Go home when you still have some gas in the tank as you'll be wanting to celebrate.
-Above all have fun.
Winter has arrived

that's very interesting - does that also mean that stiffer modern boots will generally be worse for knees than softer modern boots? I recall some posts from CEM (boot fitting expert) which also suggested that poor fitting boots could restrict flex. And, of course, some people don't have the technique fully to flex their boots anyway (I would include myself in that category).
A very helpful list of "things to do" from @Jonathan Bell. I would add - get some good quality ski lessons because using good technique will reduce the strain on your knees (and much else). My knees tell me the moment I'm skiing badly - weight back, etc.
|
|
|
|
|
|
interesting point @pam w, I'll ping Colin I think!
|
|
|
|
|
|
@pam w, each individual is different, whilst a softer flexing boot may be better fro some equally a stiffer boot is also better for others.... someone with a limited dorsiflexion of the ankle joint will benefit from a more upright slightly stiffer boot than someone of the same weight and ability with normal ROM at the ankle a boot fitter can lift the heel inside a boot (with a heel lift) to help with the available ROM at the ankle but only the skier can do much to improve it (if it is not an osseous blockage)
on the poorly fitted boot /boot too big front, these can affect ankle flexion as well, having to tighten a boot too much will have an effect on the way if flexes and a boot too loose at the cuff will result in someone using up all their available ROM before they actually bend the boot itself, so when they do actually touch the front of the boot they have no more flex available... forward lean is another area which will affect how much someone can flex the boot... too much and you use what flex you have, so most manufactures are producing more upright boots to allow better skeletal stacking and to allow people to use what ROM they have more effectively.... calf muscle size is yet another factor in this and that is a story for another day/post
hope that makes sense (written in the 5 minutes i had between clients)

I think boots that are too stiff for the skier to flex will almost always be throwing you into the backseat; a very bad position for knee safety.
Obviously a very aggressive skier will be able to flex a stiffer boot but that's not everyone's style.

@Jonathan Bell, so, what are your thoughts on the correct flex of boot for someone with a restricted ankle joint ROM?
