Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski DVDs from the US

Am interested in buying some DVDs made by these guys - http://shop.powderwhore.com/dvds - as well as some from Sweetgrass Productions.

Problem is import taxes when buying from the US. I recall getting a nasty £10 or £15 extra surprise when buying a TGR DVD in the past.

Any sH's have similar experience and/or can offer a legitimate way of avoiding this plse?

Or do I just suck it up and throw it into the bottomless pit already signposted "Silly money spent on sliding down hills"?

If it's 1 DVD it might sneak under the VAT/Duty threshold?
Certainly did when I was importing region 1/US DVDs, before they became widespread in EU.

And one shop conveniently had everything on back-order, so did split shipping, and sent each DVD as they came in to stock. And i'd gone to all the trouble of ordering 6 at a time, which gave the optimal total price for Fedex, Duty and VAT.

I got caught by this recently receiving gifts from Australia - £8 charge from the postoffice and £9 or something in VAT. Had never had to pay this before (going back to 2007 or so) so perhaps the rules have changed slightly?

The HMRC guidance says this: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/post/buying.htm

If you ordered them one at a time, the $20 DVDs would probably not attract VAT.
