Hi,
I'm planning a week in 2nd half of January to Val Thorens. We've got cheap flights sorted so now I'm trying to sort accommodation.
We're 2 adults and it does have to be Val Thorens (other halfs only demand so...) what I'm wondering is if there are usually late, cheap accommodation deals in the apartment hotels? We're pretty flexible - anything 3* ish up and self catering probably preferable but willing to look at other deals too.
We went same time last year and everyone said how quiet they were but is this representative? At the minute I'm seeing lots of "early booking" deals that aren't particularly inspiring in terms of discount. Should I hold my nerve and book late? I quite like the look of the group of Montana hotels - anyone know if these ever have cheap late deals for accommodation only?
Any other thoughts I'm missing? I'm quite new to this!
Next up car hire...
Thanks!

Haha I would hope it's VERY nice... currently showing at about £2k for accomodation and half board for 2 people! Unless it gets very discounted last minute I just can't stomach paying that much for a room when I'm not intending to be outside most the time!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

CharlotteJane, We stayed here http://www.alpineskistudio.eu/studio.html a couple of years ago. Apartment was clean and had everything we needed. You can ski to the door. You have to cross a road before you can ski out. It is above a pub, but 4th floor, so we didn't hear any noise.

A few of us stayed in one of the Montana apartments for a long weekend at the start of the EOSB. It was just about good enough, but I wouldn't do it for a week...
If you're always out, fair enough - the location is good and the beds are fine. But the decor was tired and basic, the kitchen had very little (meant to be self catering, no idea how that would have been achievable!), and the wifi rarely worked.
We did stay in the cheaper complex though - pay more and you might get more...?
Definitely self catered deals available, bearing in mind the poor kitchen equipment.

I know the owner of that apartment and he is a very nice guy. Also advertises it on owners direct.
Our apartment on owners direct in Val Thorens is http://www.ownersdirect.co.uk/france/FR9254.htm
January is the quietest week generally speaking. Last year we rented the apartment out for 18 weeks. The only 2 weeks we had where the apartment was empty were 2 weeks in January. I think most people find this.If you approached people now I am sure that you would get a reasonable deal from most people.

CharlotteJane, January's a miserable time to be in VT; cold and windblown unless you're very lucky. You won't have a problem getting a late deal.

Raceplate, I would probably try somewhere lower down for a January week, you certainly need a bit of tree cover for when the weather closes in.

We were there over NYE and the weather was perfect, but Jan is normally the coldest month around. I can also vouch for UCPA which is where we stayed. Amazing value and the centre was great fun. It had a fleeting resemblance to Blofeld's place in OHMSS!

Hells Bells, I think you mean your advice for CharlotteJane, don't you? I already know where the trees are in the 3V - they're right above my apartment in La Tania

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Raceplate, we were there that time last year... it was cold according to the weather reports but I think I'm too unfit to actually get cold skiing! I don't know if we were just very lucky last year but we only had 1 day that wasn't mostly sunny - I guess it doesn't bother me so much as a beginner compared to someone who was going further afield?
Thanks all - definitely got some ideas to look at. I guess the fact that other people think it's too bleak in Jan probably explains why we can afford to go and why it was so nice and quiet!

I'll second HoneyBunny's enthusiasm Be cool Honeybunny! for l'Oxalys due to its comfort/quality/convenience, however they don't have many small apartments so tend to be better for groups of 4 upwards. Similarly the new Hameau du Kashmir just across the piste is really nice but consists mostly of 4 and 6 bed aparts.
Montana have a new 4* residence (Plein Sud, I think) which seems to have been well received although I've not had a chance to see the aparts myself. Again though, I think they're slightly larger, 4-6 pers maybe? There are lots of studio aparts that are fine for a couple and often available cheaply but some are rather basic.
