Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Austria Ski Weekend

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi All,

Frequent browser, first poster I think!

I'm in need of some advice for a ski weekend in Austria - seasoned skier in France but can't really make head nor tail of the country and airports etc.

We are looking at 6th to 10th of March for between 10 and 12 people but I'm really struggling to find accommodation, ideally catered for no more than 100euros a night. The ones I can find are astronomical!
Open to location but ideally near innsbruck in a resort with good apres/nightlife.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Bevan

Try skiwelt. i found some there last year. we eventually went to saalbach to meet another group but i did find some accomodation. took a few e mails and may have to offer to pay for an extra night but there are places iut there.
Jus trying to do a second saalbach trip for this year. it will be easier to go self catered but the apres and good food are reasonable and would go that route everytime.

nozawaonsen, yep, Fasching ends on the wednesday 5th March but people will be there for the week of course. Also, bevanuk, your dates are over a saturday night - the Austrians like things nice and tidy sat-sat so, effectively, your booking would block out two weeks. You may also be trying to book too early - September/October time they'll be thinking about winter.

I know one ad-hoc place that will come in well under your budget. British run - http://www.stafflerhotel.com/

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Bode Swiller, Yep, I was going to suggest the Staffler as well!

Niederau Puzzled
If you're looking for catered, you might have to go through a UK specialist tour op that does long weekends. As others have said, most Austrian accomodation tends to be 7 days, Sat to Sat. Resorts with good apres near Innsbruck inlcude, St Anton, Ischgl (Kappl down the road may offer cheaper rooms), Saalbach/Hinterglemm, Soelden and Mayrhofen. €100 a night will get you very little in St Anton or Ischgl if you're only looking for a long weekend. Dig deep enough and you will find them.

http://www.bergfex.com/ is a good starting point

bevanuk, as that is the highest of high season weeks you will struggle to find anything for a part week. Your best bet is to fly into innsbruck (which it looks like you are thinking of any way) and stay down in or near the city if you want to book for that number of people. The chances of getting any part week accommodation for that number of people last minute is not impossible but you may be looking for a minor miracle.

Getting touch directly with the hotels may get you somewhere - look at the outlying villages in the Zillertal for example and use the free buses and trains to get from place to place.

bevanuk, being Fasching that week, you'll find it very difficult to find weekend accom. in resort. However, you should be able to find something in Innsbruck, which has great nightlife, and take advantage of the Olympia World lift pass, which covers several different resorts, which have pretty straightforward public transport access: http://www.innsbruck.info/en/experience/winter-holidays/ski-areas-ski-passes/ski-areas-ski-passes.html

The Zum Hirschen in Zell am See will take 10 people, currently £614 for 2 people B & B (only 2 rooms left, other options are a bit dearer), dinner is £15 a head.

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
I had a bit of a mare last year booking flights for Friday to Monday from Munich over the first weekend in March, and then sorting out accomodation a couple of weeks in advance.

I got lists off the tourist offices and emailed literally every place within lift-station walking distance in Soll, Ellmau, Scheffau & Westendorf. Absolutely no luck.

The problem was going over 2 Sat-Sat weeks. Probably a quarter of places replied with "We can do Sat-Tues no problem, can you shift your dates?"

In the end I went to Niederau (steered I think from a recommendation by Bode Swiller who I forgot to thank - "Thanks Bode") , where there were several hotels which would still do Fri-Mon.

But the trick is to start with Sat-Tues and not give yourself the problem!
