Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Probably because Tamworth, the original, called themselves thus.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

because it's a little more catchy than, "ugly, grey, soulless steel shed with a snowmaking machine, a bit of gradient and a rope tow"

MK could be a snow-cone, but then you'd get 'merkins looking for a sugar-laden frozen treat

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

It did, indeed, but I recall its developer John Llewelyn telling me that the name was inspired by the SSAWS Ski Dome in Tokyo, which preceded it. In fact, the first promotional flyer for the Tamworth dome featured an interior photo of the Tokyo dome to give people an idea of what indoor snow looked like.
As far as I'm aware, Tokyo was the first indoor snow facility to use the word 'dome' - about five of them preceded it, though it was by far the largest and most expensive facility ever built (maybe the world's most costly single ski infrastructure project ever constructed). It was pulled down in 2003 to make way for Tokyo IKEA.

So an improvement then?

I thought you had done a thread on the Tokyo Bowl previously?
Could you do a link?

Filthyphil30k, I did at least two articles for The Sunday Times about the Tokyo dome (one in the colour magazine), and have a lot of photos and other archive material - including video I shot at the opening ceremony. Would be good to set up a comprehensive website about it sometime - I can't imagine anything on that scale will ever be built again (since it operated at a loss).

There was a Telford snowdome before the Tamworth one IIRC; very tiny and almost dome-shaped.

'Fridge' is also a bit of a misnomer since the temp is below 0C.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

The correct term should be Snow Centre , however currently there is only one of those : ) ( its a better name though )

gilleski, Have you trade-marked the name??

You know it makes sense.

The outside roof profile of Ski Dubai is distinctly curved and the space between it and the (flattish) indoor ceiling is used for insulation. I think for the most part actually by just holding a layer of still air. I recall a documentary on it with astonishingly little difference in energy utilisation between winter and summer. Not that it's by any means eco-friendly at any time.
An arched profile is best structurally for giving a clear space beneath, unobstructed by columns - cathedral builders knew what they were doing.
Comedy Goldsmith, my guess would be that most of them operate at a loss - or at best break-even. Anyone know?
