I picked up a hitchhiker this morning on the way up to Val Thorens. He told me that he had hitched from Paris, and that he was a student at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers (ENSAM). He was on his way to meet about 40 fellow students for a long weekend skiing. He then explained that there is a tradition at his university, whereby each year, the alumni (generally in their 40s) pay for a number of current students to go skiing. All the student needs to do is find transport. Accomodation, lift pass, ski hire etc is all paid for.
