Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hidden Valley by car?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi All, first posting but long time reader. So after reading all the great trip reports for the Dolomites, I decided to tag along with the gf for her annual Christmas trip back home, which happens to be Treviso. One thing led to another and now we have family trip planned with her parents and brother. Free apartment from a distant aunt at Pecol. I'm told this is near Zoldo and part of Civetta. I have only been to Dolomites once, San Martino for a half day trip couple years back. Sad

So my question is, could one drive to the Lagazuoi lifts by car? Her father is quite hateful of public transport and we should have two wagons/estates with us for the trip. I didn't see a parking lot on the 3D map but did see one on another 2D.

Please correct me if any of the info here is wrong. Any thoughts on other must do's that is close by?

Thanks!

yep - pretty sure there's parking at Lagazuoi, but no idea what that road is like. Hidden Valley is one way only afaik, so bus/taxi ride back.

thanks! great forum, u guys have a ton of info on here. Yea I thought about the taxi ride back, maybe I will get a few drinks in him and hope for the best.

Speaking of roads, would chains be necessary? I think he has a 5 series XD, which I hope is sufficient.

generaltso88, roads are pretty good and good parking. I suppose you need chains in theory, but if you pick your day(s) and the forecast is OK, you should be fine with winter tyres. The face of Langazuoi is well worth a ski. Nearby Marmolada is good too. Then there's Cortina if any non-skiers want to hang out somewhere pleasant. The Tofana sector is good there.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

generaltso88, I can confirm there is a car park at the lift base station. You may well need chains depending on the weather. I've been there and not needed chains, but......

Thanks, he might have one just in case. Another question. Where does the horse tow begin and stop? I'm just curious where does it actually bring you.... is the end at another lift or just to a road so that one can get a taxi to return to the Lagazuoi lift.

horse tow is at the end of the hidden valley run. You'll know when you're there - there's quite a flat bit at the end. Taxis are also available from there I think? Horse tow goes along a 2km path to a drag lift at Armentarola, to access the San Cassiano sector and the Sella Ronda. Taxis are also available from there back to Lagazuoi.

That's it. There is a bar/ café part way down the valley (Scottoni's) and another one further down. The horse tow is basically from that second café. If there is insufficient snow at the bottom (at the second café) then taxis run from there.

When I was there in January, there was plenty of snow and horse and taxi options.

generaltso88, if your gf's dad can get over his hatred of public transport (or better yet if you can drop him for a day wink)) then from Pecol you can do the WW1 ski-tour which will be mostly on skis but with a public bus or two thrown in and takes in the Cinque Torri area then up Lagazoui for the Hidden Valley etc. Plenty of stuff on this route can be found on here via search.

Haha, I thought about that too but I like the guy, believe it or not. Plus I don't like the whole tour thing in general because there is always the added pressure of getting back in time for the last lift.

Re chains: I've had a BMW 5 series xD, and I've done a few times the passes in that area. They'll probably close the road well before chains are needed on that car (assuming it has winter tyres of course).

I have parked at Lagazuoi car park so it is very convenient to do Hidden Valley this way.

As other SH have pointed out there are two cafes/bars. The Scottoni does the famous BBQ even I have not tried it. The second or last cafe is a bar with a taxi stop outside. The taxi will only come when someone calls. Anybody can do it as long as he/she has rounded up a group of 4 or 5 as the taxi will not take just one passenger. I was asked to join by one of the group and the taxi first went to Armentarola and then to Ladazuoi when the last time I used it. It is dirt cheap as the fare is shared between the group. I believe the last cafe/bar will have the taxi number if it is not already displayed outside the taxi stand.

From memory the horse drag is within a kilometer from the last cafe/bar and it only terminates before Armentarola as everybody has to walk there after the horse drag.

It looks the taxi is there for returning the skiers/boarders to Lagazuoi.

Great! Thanks for the post. very informative. I think we will take the car as I think it will probably be faster than bus. The Italians all drive bat poo-poo fast and her father is no exception. One question though, how many people does it take to fill up the horse tow? I wonder how long we will have to wait for it to start. i read that the tow doesnt start until its full. 30 mins or less?

Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:
Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:
Last time I counted it was 50 per rope. The horse owner only shows one rope initially. When one is filled he throws out another. Then he collects money, gives changes and the process takes a long time. It is a waste of time for those who can't wait.

Have been Dolomites twice with car. In one trip the road from Selva Gardena to Alta Badia was closed due to a sudden big dump. Never had to use chains yet. In one trip I went down using minor roads after spending the first week in Ski Amade. Was driving with a Subaru plus snow tyres.

Civetta, Cortina and Kronplatz are all within easy reach if you drive to the Hidden Valley.

2 €, same as calling a taxi from the car park next to the aforesaid cafe.
For a horse toe, not sure, but I guess same price as a whole foot wink
