Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Salomon Z12 Bindings

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi All

I have a pair of skis with Salomon Z12 bindings. Bindings are of the Fast Track variety in that the toe and heel units can be slid along the Fast Track plate independently of each other by way of lifting a small retaining clip on them and then clicking them back into place on the plate.

Question is, can the toe and heel pieces be removed entirely from the Fast Track plate without the need for any unscrewing? I want to possibly change the toe and heel units for newer ones from a newer Z12 binding (of the exact same model) but am loathe to start having to unscrew any part of the bindings from the skis themselves in order to achieve this.

Have consulted the Salomon Shopfitters manual and I think that once the Fast Track plate is mounted to the ski the toe and heel units are merely slid onto it from the back of the plate and are then suitably adjusted to fit the boot.

Any advice gratefully received.

Many thanks

Yes all just slide off, haven't got them anymore but from memory...lift heel retaining clip and slide rear binding off, then lift toe binding clip and slide off to the middle (if I remember) this then comes off with the steel inter connecting strip by hinging up out of the base plate.

Disclaimer memory a little fuzzy but should be able to figure out!

I had several Smartrak plates with 914 bindings and they definitely come off (it's how I used to transport 2/3 pairs of skis in a single bag on airlines) but I think you have to pull both off the rear of the track. Getting the toe piece past the middle can be little awkward (or maybe gatecrasher's right and I should have been removing it at the middle?) I think a 914 toe is longer than a Z12 though so maybe it wouldn't fit through the gap.

Hi All

Many thanks for the advice.

Well, as you rightly said the heel unit merely slides off the rear of the Smart Track. The toe unit also slides towards the rear but comes away from the track at the mid point. When replacing the toe piece merely slide on from the rear of the Smart Track (ensuring that both sides of the unit are fully engaged on the track), slide all the way to the front and engage ensuring unit clips on to the track. Once toe piece installed merely slide on the heel unit in the same way ensuring clip engages to track and its job done.

Whole thing took less than 10 minutes and the safety of the skis has been instantly enhanced with the new toe and heel units (as well as the appearance). I personally chose not to unscrew / remove anything that was actually directly screwed into the ski itself although it would be very easy to replace the whole Smart Track itself if you wished.

Regards

Very Happy
