Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

UK Snowdome instructor

Hello fellow snowheads.

Do we have any Snowhead instructors out there who teach at any of the UK snowdomes or can recommend anyone?

Have booked a holiday for next February in Switzerland with some friends who are first time skiiers. They would like to have a day or two of
lessons before we go to give them a head start. Im a cautious intermediate who could do with some extra tuition to help my confidence and
although I will book some lessons out there I would like to book some improver lessons myself before we go.

Thanks all Smile

Where is your nearest snowdome? I'm guessing the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead of the Snowdome in Tamworth are your nearest. Both of these will offer learn to ski in a day, and at this time of year your friends will probably find themselves in avery small group, possibly just them and the instructor. If your friends are looking to book private lessons at Hemel I can recommend a good instructor for beginners.

I teach at Hemel, and although I don't do beginners any more we offer clinics for cautious intermediates and above. See here for details.

Hi - our nearest dome is probably Tamworth but we have been to Chill Factore before and thought it was bigger and better for us.
Our mates would probably book an overnight stay so I don't think they would be too bothered where they go - the key here is that they are both in their
early 50's so it would be better if its quieter and quality ski tuition is a must - we don't want them put off the idea!

Would be interested in Hemel I think so any recommendations gladly received....

Jennyski, a good guy for private lessons for beginners at Hemel is Richard Featherstone. Nice relaxed style, good technical understanding, very friendly.

A lot of level1, particularly experienced level1s are perfectly capable of delivering entirely satisfactors lessons to beginners. It is after all a fairly standard process and level 2s, particularly experienced ones are capable of developing lower intermediates as they have some basic flaws. I'd agree generally you need a level 3 once you are a genuine intermdiate skier and a level 4 once you are a genuine advanced skier. I don't think there a lot of level 3s working in snow centres to be honest.

Cynic, I know one or two L3 who have not done a course since the 90's and are dreadfull at deliviring lessons, I am a 2.80 Very Happy I have seen L1 deliver excellent beginner courses, its not the number on the page its about the instructor and their abilites.

If using Hemel. I can reccomend both Richard, who has taught my son & has a very relaxed gentle approach IMHO.
Also Scooby Simon, he recently sorted my skiing right out Very Happy
I have also attended several clinics with Inside Out and can't reccomend them highly enough for intermediate/improver

IIRC the courses you needed to convert old BASI 2 to Level 3 only became available in the 2000s... so your L3 that have not done a course since the 90s can't be L3....

+1 ^^^^^ This
I think there are some L1's & L2's who choose to remain teaching in the UK through choice for whatever reason & have decades of experience on plastic & in domes.
In fact I think there may be a special BASI qualification that recognises this "specialised teaching"
I'm sure I'll be corrected shortly if wrong

I don't think there ever was a conversion course. Certainly there wasn't for us old BASI1s who just woke up one day to discover we were now known as Level 2.

I'd agree with that. There are refresher requirements for all levels. For L1 and L2 it's every three years, and for L3 and L4 it's every year. If an instructor hasn't done the required refresher, they are no longer qualified.

RobW, Old Grade 2 == teach and tech modules, 200 hrs. New L3 as old Grade 2 + 2nd discipline + Off piste/Mountain safety + 2nd Language + Common Theory + Coaching course --- so no conversion -- but more courses.

ski, Yep agree the things you need to pass now to get a L3 are more than what you needed for old Grade 2, but if you already had a Grade 2, you just became a Level 3 without having to pass anything extra.

Just like those L3s who got L3 when it was first called that - they don't need the extra items to maintain their qualification, just need to attend the refreshers.

RobW, To get ISIA stamp (i.e. L3) you needed to do those.

Some of the refresher courses are quite relaxed, some dont actaully have an examination element to them, I was not using BASI as an example for the conversion in relation to the 90's comment as I am not farmiliar enough in relation to BASI to comment.
