Hi, a question for the locals/regular seasonaires in PDS......
After the recent snowfalls how are we looking in terms of current snow depth vs a typical season at the end of January? Are we behind schedule still? Or are the current levels about normal for end of Jan?
Have a late trip booked end of march so just wondering...
thanks!

Great day today at La Grande Terche - Roc d'Enfer circuit a couple of times - cold, cold first thing, it had been about minus 11.8 overnight at our place and I could hear the snow blowers on the Melezes which runs down to the Perrieres lift. Just driven past there this evening and they are blowing now. Blowing all day at LGT, difficult to avoid being covered at times. Sun was out and clear blue skies, glorious. Due for a couple of cloudy ,maybe snowy days now.

Pamski, How is the new Lac tow working out on the circuit? Does it improve the return to the main station? Thx

dennisp, works fine - the first time we used it a couple of weeks ago was apparently its first day and the guys at the bottom of the gondola were so proud of it, telling us all about it when we arrived. That day it was 'not very special' getting from the top back to the main piste as very rutted from skidoos. Much better yesterday - its a very slow tow, very gentle, and up through the trees, and then its not very far back down to the gondola base.

Another fun morning, although I can't remember the last time I was up the mountain for longer than two hours. Got first lift up Chamossière (well, ok, there was one guy on the lift in front of me but I got on the slope before him) and was the first person down Les Creux then pootled down the red, had a coffee and skiied back to Les Perrieres, not exactly taxing but much fun.

I thought I'd post here rather then anywhere else as lots of you are either out there or have recently visited.
We're staying in Morzine (more Pleney side) for two weeks from 20th Feb, can't wait. I've never skied the PdS before and I'm looking for top run/apres/mountain lunch spots. Who do you recommend for lessons? We're pretty confident skiers, don't tend to actually look at a piste map unless we're properly lost!
There is loads of info spread across snowheads on the PdS, almost too much so I thought I'd start here!!!

Cloudy today in Chatel and went to the Essert area of Abondance - great place and will be returning on a brighter day for photos etc. We even found some lovely off piste with v few tracks. Area was very very quiet and is a whopping 10 euros for the day (or free with a pds pass). Hoping to get back there early next week after some fresh snow this weekend.

Chatel Snow, Is there enough there to occupy a full day? Is it as extensive as the LA Chapelle side of the Braitaz area you visited the other day? We've been meaning to have a trip down there but never got round to it (and sometimes the conditions have not been good enough).
I suppose an alternative would be to do a morning there and an afternoon on the Cret Beni side of La Chapelle (where I also have never skied). Bargain lift pass!

Chatel Snow, we must try and get over there - be a car job from here. Cloudy today so we skied around the trees on the Morzine side - some pretty slick bits of piste which were fine for us but I felt for some of the first of second weekers. Looked as if it could snow - pretty cold - needing my tea bags every day but then I am just a wimp!

Clear night tonight in Morzine - but beginning to get misty now - stars not so visible.
Taken from the balcony, with plenty of light pollution from streetlamps etc. Next dark, clear night, up to the frozen lake to try this again...
Was warm today - suspect conditions will be a touch icy tomorrow morning!

In reply to qu's above - my impression is that if there is any fresh snow and you like making fresh tracks then you could very easily spend the day there or more.
If you like travelling large distances on pistes and travelling on modern super fast lifts - then maybe you would find it limiting for a whole day, but as mentioned above - you can always dip in for a half day then do Cret beni etc.
Like Cret beni, it is a great option for family / kids, but there is more varied terrain than Cret Beni (or so it seemed). One thing to note, on a flat light day, the impression I got was that the pistes were more open at Essert, so visibility is perhaps generally better at Cret beni where many of the runs are tree lined both sides - but that is just nit picking. Lift staff are friendly at both resorts and seemed generally pleased to see you!
At the moment, the run to the bottom is a little sketchy, but snow conditions were generally good on piste and they have invested in some snow cannon too.
In summary - a different atmosphere and a different experience. Looking forward to getting back there for photos next week.

Farry, you must visit La paika restaurant in the grande turche area (people please correct me if I am wrong).
It is near the Ranfolly bowl which we really enjoy.

mini_mo, La Paika is on the run down to La Turche - certainly worth a visit. You need to take the Grains d'Or lift out of the Rosta bowl, and then ski down the Vorosses and the Paika is down there on the right hand side. Afterwards either ski down to the bottom and take the drag lift up, or you can ski across the piste from La Paika, through the trees and on to the Melezes piste and ski down and take the Perrieres lift up. La Grande Terche is along at St Jean d'Aulps - another area which we also like to visit.

dennisp, yup - you need to be a little careful as there is a bit of a stream or big dip... two thirds of the way over to the Melezes, seems to be a snowbridge there at the moment so its ok - friend and I fell into it the other year, but I know to be a bit cautious now!

dennisp, feel free - and let me have the link! That's very flattering - thank you.
Here's another - frozen Lac Montriond.
Sunny in Morzine right now, but cloud coming in, and snow forecast for tonight...we need it! Pistes are in good condition if a bit swept by the end of the day, off piste is pretty crunchy now. Plenty of glolf ball sized ice balls around the place.
