It appears to be snowing at 850m in Radstadt!... should be an awesome season end!

Snowing at about that level here now Flangesax - just come in and it is trying to snow at my level (800m) if it continues like this it will probably snow over night.
Forecast for tomorrow may well bring me over in ski gear The skis are still in the car from the last outing!

I skied in Hochfügen today.
Slopes were in very good condition, seems to have been about 20-30cm of recent snow.
A couple of the runs were a bit icy right at the bottom but not a problem.
Was very quiet, not many people skiing and misty all day with some light snow.
When the mist cleared for a couple of hours there was excellent off-piste skiing down from the top of the Hochfügen 2000m lift -- the best I've had this winter.
Skied around Schladming today, sunshine, cool and very spring like. Piste in great spring shape, a bit slushy lower down by the afternoon but in general very good.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

i.e. 50cm fresh in Sölden, 40cm Stubaier Glacier and 35cm in the Alberg.
I agree with that . . .
Came back Saturday from a fantastic week in Sölden!
One of the best weeks skiing of my life, loved every minute of the whole week.
charlichoo, we have Solden on our scanner for 2012, bit off topic, but which lift is the best one to be based near?

sharon1953, Giggijoch is probably the gateway to the biggest part, but the Gaislachkogl gives you a super area to ski in that is generally less crowded. There is a regular shuttle bus between the two any way so it is no big deal to be honest.
As I drive there I usually stay at the Gaislachkogl end, but mostly drive to the Giggijochbahn to uplift into the system, especially if I'm with a mixed group of skiers.

Fantastic day and fantastic conditions yesterday.
Fresh powder snow at Dachstein Glacier.
We took the ski route from the glacier to Obertraun.... could not have wished for better conditions!
Obviously things became very wet as we closed our journey at the mid to lower parts of Krippenstein.
All in all a fab day!

flangesax, Thanks for the video. Is there many "walking" sections on this route?
I think the advertise it for snowboarders as well on the website but in real, is it doable on the board?

I'd say it is 50/50.
I certainly wouldn't bother to do this particular route on my board especially as the snow was up to my thigh at times when I had unclipped!... however....
the blue tomato school (based in Schladming) run tours up there. We saw a group get on with us that had normal boards and were all issued these weird collapsed touring skis (2 or 3 sections per ski about 18" long) that had skins fixed to their bases. Looked really light and non-cumbersome when strapped to a rucksack... didn't see where they went at the top though!
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

flangesax, Nice video. Wish I'd come along, spent most the day driving family from here to there and back. When you next touring?
I had a gentle ski tour up from ski willys in ramsau to the base of the dachstein cable car today. Wonderful spring day for a ski tour in the woods. The final ski down was rather fun, skiing on a closed piste with large patches of grass and some very thin wet snow, quite enjoyable. (south facing, low piste) Took a late lift up planai from schladming. Had a very nice drink at the Schlaf alm admiring the fading light over the Dachstein, must be up there with the best views I've experienced anywhere in the mountains. The ski down was nice and quiet, conditions were sugary, that refreezing slush stuff. Set to warm up from tomorrow for a few days, may get the BBQ out one afternoon. Most the Austria ski team were in Schladming for some award giving thing.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Well we were closest to the newest Gaislachkogl gondola and I'm glad we were as the queues were no problem at all.
The Giggijoch gondola however was VERY busy with huge queues.
You can access all the same ski areas from either gondola station, so I would recommend the Gaislachkogl gondola.
We stayed at the 4* Hotel Erhart, which was brilliant and help make the hopliday so great.
From the hotel its was only a short 5 min walk to the Gaislachkogl gondola thanks to a new footbridge across the river.
We never go to the same resort 2 years in a row, but we will be returning to Solden and to the Hotel Erhart in the very near future.

Super little ski tour to the peak above the planai, from top of the new mitterhaus chairlift. Set off quite early, conditions going up pretty testing, refrozen spring snow, that was tough to get up in sections. Need to improve my uphill technique. The very top of the peak is very exposed, boot packed the last 50m, the top ridge is just wide enough to walk along, big drops all around. I sat down for a drink and felt pretty dizzy, I don't always have a head for heights. Managed to walk down back to where I'd left the skis. The initial ski down was on spring snow, just softening up a bit. Took a short cut off the peak and scored some variable powder, nice in ptches. Ended the run in the trees, snow not too bad but warming up pretty quick today. After lunch, skied down red 1 to Schladming, fantastic piste conditions and near enough empty so attacked the piste with large gs turns top to bottom, legs burning. Love spring skiing, such variation in all directions, altitudes and time. It's like skiing in 6 dimensions.

flangesax - great video, really enjoyed it.... was up at the glacier couple of weeks ago and there was no powder at all so looks like things have improved. Just out of interest is this a trail one can do unguided or would it be best hire a guide ?

Had fine day skiing in Kitzbühel/Kirchberg again. Great weather, blue skies and sun and pretty hot. Pistes were in good condition, particularly earlier on, but getting soft and a bit heavy at the end of the day. Lower down it is mostly a strip of snow amongst the green but most lifts were still running (all valley runs open except the Kampen). Very quiet. Off piste was possible here and there but hard work, I found.
Here's a picture, taken from the Pengelstein restaurant, of the 3S lift which links the Kitzbühel/Kirchberg area across to Jochberg and the pistes up to Pass Thurn ...

Anyone been to Saalbach this week ? just after a heads up to see what we are to expect next week !
Dropped my son off at his new kindergarten this morning and then enjoyed a few hours skiing Hochwurzen and Reiteralm. Piste conditions were excellent, still hard packed to start with but quickly softening up. Was on some new Atomic GS12 185cm skis I got for 240euros. Empty piste and sun was the signal to ride the rails, what fun, really stable at high speed. I've some atomic sl12 165cm, the gs have very similar feel but just go faster, surprisingly easy for short terms too. All piste open top to bottom, looks like a change in weather over the weekend, with some snow but how low will be the key.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

waynos, fantastic today wasn´t it!! I skied Wagrain, had the black 24/5 all to myself til 10am. the pistes were tip top, some of the best skiing I had all season

dazman, sorry I missed you! I'll keep an eye open next time.
On my way home that day I saw a car with the registration KB-PAT 1 and wondered whether St. Patrick himself had been checking things out. Was that you too?

Ahhh....grab yourself a Uk IP!
Speedster, On fresh days you would need a guide. Once the route has been re-established I think that you could pick your way through. If you get it worng you would end up in Halstatt rather than Obertraun (which aren't too far apart).... plenty of people scattered about here to help though
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Are you out in Schladming long term now?
Yep, got here last week, giving living here a go, first bug hurdle getting son settled in and speaking german, he's just turned 5. Been coming to schladming for a number of years now and really exciting to be living here. Would have liked some more winter weather but the current spring conditions are pretty tip top.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

waynos, Oh well done that man.
Our #1 son worked the season 04/05 as a chef in the Hotel Rossl (above the Admiral sports bar). We have been coming to Schladming each year since then. It will be interesting to hear how you get on.
Are you working remotely from the UK or will you be working locally? Or you may not be working at all

Quick update on conditions in the Ski Amade. Today we skied over in Schladming and Zauchensee and in general conditions across both resorts are very similar, ok first thing, but softening very quickly upto about 12.00 when you need to either focus on getting the technique right or head to the bar. In summary the pistes are OK, not great at all, but also not so bad you can't ski. If I had to chose between our home resort of Mühlbach and the two resorts listed above I would aim for either Mühlbach or Zauchensee as both are offering some decent skiing and empty pistes. Snow is forecast, so fingers crossed it arrives and the temp drops. cheers Duncan

Ousekjarr- cheers for that, not good news then, by the time i get in and look at the cams its dark and cant see much at all.
Due to work comittments i had to book late but now wish i had left it to last minute and watched for the weather, live and learn eh.
nibbley-uk, There's always the Kitzsteinhorn glacier at Kaprun, about 20 minutes away by car, or 40 by bus. Conditions there are still good.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.
Kitzsteinhorn will be packed this weekend as it is a Volvo Freeride Special event weekend. I was up there in the pre-season (mid- November) when one took place and could not believe the numbers that turned up. We gave up skiing after about 2 hours most of which was spent in lift queues.
ousekjarr, nibbley-uk,
I wouldn't panic too much... there will be skiing higher up until late season - well at least the Salzburg Professional Ski and Snowboard Instructors' Association think so... as they have a course there mid April!
I skied there in late April a couple of seasons ago. Not all runs were open but I had a good time... more time for Sun and Beer!

Cameras in Saalbach are currently showing this:
Doesn't look too bad at the top of the mountain, but....
Clearly, the first angle doesn't tell the whole story. This is south facing, 2100m down to 1000m, so it looks like anything below about 1900m is artificial and liable to be slushy.
In Hinterglemm, the floodlit piste is north facing and has good snow making, so is probably still in reasonable condition all the way down:
After all it is free

Thanks for the the info, i guess it will beat working however the snow is,but a real shame when its the only ski hol i can make this year.
We are booked with first choice and im told they do a trip to the glacier sometime in the week.
Might need more spending money though as i think we may be in the bar earlier than we expected
