My first snowheads post! Conditions look fantastic. I've got a month in Morzine from 15th March so hoping for a bit of this late season. Going to have to stop looking at these pages over the next seven weeks or my eyes will get very green!

Amazing conditions in Avoriaz today. Skied down the Swiss Wall in knee high powder - oh er! Skiing with an instructor from ESF who found us some amazing untouched stashes of the luvly stuff off-piste. Almost killed us in an untouched gully in sometimes waist height powder. No room to turn so pretty ugly.
Looking forward to sun tomorrow

It was certainly knee deep - I know my legs are rather short so knee deep is relative - and I don't usually go for this deep stuff and like the corduroy but somehow today I managed it all and came out with a bit of a smile. Its now minus 11.2C in Les Gets so its all going to stay for a while. Deserting PDS tomorrow for the Grand Massif...

Pamski, please share your views on conditions in the GM. The reports page on the forum is very quiet. Hope you have a great trip.

Loved the skiing in Morz/Les Gets. Thought it showed Les Gets up as the great resort that it is.

Cloudy here this morning, minus 3.6C at the moment - yesterday at the same time it was minus 12C and clear skies. Couple of inches new snow outside this morning. When we drove back to Les Gets just after 5 yesterday afternoon there were cars and people everywhere, it looked as if it had been very busy with day visitors (did put trippers but thought that a little rude!) out on the slopes. We had been day trippers over to Samoens and onto the GM - where it was very busy..

Just a dusting of new snow overnight here in Chatel, much less than expected. Large variations in forecast amounts for tonight's snowfall according to the latest models - and notable differences between this mornings Meteo Suisse / Meteo France forecasts etc.

Made a trip to the Cret Beni area of La Chapelle d'Abondance this afternoon - what a lovely little place! Could park within 100m of the chairlift that takes you up into the area - pistes were deserted and I think there was 1 time when there was someone getting onto the lift in front of me. Snow was great, except for the last section down to the bottom. Will go back on a nice day to get some photos - but if you are after a quiet afternoon's pootling about - it is worth a visit.

No snow yet in Champéry...Just wind judging by neighbours flag pole making a lot of noise!

Rain has been the main issue overnight here in Chatel at 1200m - it chucked it down in the middle of the night, before it turned back to snow- meaning we only have a max depth of 3cm of snow/graupel mix. It looks like the snow/rain limit went up to about 1400m and there is likely to be a lot of snow on the upper half of the mtn - but it has also been very windy. Lots of avalanche blasting going on.

Just off to Chatel this Saturday. Delighted to find this thread!
Do you have any recommendations of favourite runs ? (Pref reds and blues and easy blacks)
What shouldn't we miss?

You know it makes sense.

In Chatel:
Easy Black - Short one in Chatel called Corbeau. Skied it when there was about a foot of fresh snow and loved it and also first thing in the morning when it had been groomed.
Plenty of Blues and reds - If you like long Blues go to the top of the Chlet Neuf area and ski down either side.
Some great reds off the Morgon Chairlift along with a longer black

Morning in Prodains area - tones of snow, perfect snow conditions for the off piste run under the Grandes Combes lift and then off the back of the black run off the top. Lovely - enough powder to float in, not enough to make it heavy going. Pistes in Prodains in lovely, fast condition. Magic. Now spitting down snow in Morzine town. Jac Sprat, I heartily recommend the Prodains area - a (pretty easy) black run along the ridge, that becomes a red and then a cruisy blue. The gondola at the bottom is very fast and efficient, and the area is very pretty. That said, it's a long way over from Chatel...

Harry Flashman, It's not that far if you keep moving and know where you are going. Two lifts up from Pre La Joux, ski down to Lindarets, lift up to the ridge other side (choice of two fast ones) and ski through Avoriaz by either route, take the Express des Intrets lift up and ski all the way down Coupe du Monde to Prodains. An hour and a half would cover it easily.
I do agree its not a tough black but if you are a bit nervous of drops off the edge of the piste it might not be perfect. Whilst over there the blue run down Arare is worth a go, particularly the left side as you look down (often roped off for racing).
Jac Sprat, All the runs from the Cornebois lift above Pre La Joux are good red/blues. Run down from the top of Linga best avoided unless you like a proper dark red.

Back from our short break and we appear to have struck lucky. Crap visibility on Thursday then an awesome morning over on Linga etc with the guy from our chalet who found us some lovely untouched deep stuff in between pistes. Then an afternoon over on Grand Combes skiing the Crozats bowl and other stuff. Then Saturday ticked a couple of the couloirs to the right of Swiss Wall, including the one Couduroy went in with his ESF chap - my mate, who's never done much off-piste, was a bit excited by it all...
Seem to have done something to my back jumping off a fairly innocuous little cliff-ette, but hopefully nothing too long lasting.
Three weeks til Vallandry, but i think we'll be back to PdS next year - short transfer and stupendous variety, especially for a mixed group like we had.

Last night's snowfall was only 3cm at 1200m and 10cm at 1800m - but the high winds had redistributed the existing snow cover meaning it was virtually impossible to tell how much had fresh snow had actually fallen. The wind had also helped to fill in some of the runs, so there was powder to be had this morning (we had a fantastic time on Barbossine, Torgon with fresh tracks a plenty first thing!)
All the forecasts we look at were well out last night except the Euro4 model, which pretty much nailed the amounts and also the higher snowfalls to the south of us in the Savoie. Will be paying much more attention to it in the future as although it only goes out to 48hrs, it is supposedly higher resolution than the GFS.
Snow showers this afternoon have added a bit more cover - so we have probably had about 5cm in total at 1200m from this snowfall. Not what we were hoping for, but better than nowt!

Chatel Snow, Shows how local the snowfall is, les carroz in GM had a good lot more than that last night, quite heavy showers later this afternoon

carroz, Yes - I think areas just to the south of us and further south did far better on this occasion - eg 25cm reported in parts of the Trois Vallees. I mentioned on last nights forecast on the chatelweb site - that the Euro 4 model was showing higher snowfall just to the south of the PDS - and it looks like it was right!
How much do you think you got in total?

Chatel Snow, About 20cm, maybe a bit more rather windblown in exposed places, but bottom of corbalanche is very sheltered and that had about 30cm

Had a lovely couple of hours with sunshine, lovely snow and empty pistes on Mt Chery today (not to mention a great coffee at La Grand Ourse).
There was about 8-10cm on the car in Les Gets yesterday with a bit of a flurry of very hard ice lumps for an hour or so in the afternoon.
