Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Laughing I thought the same, but will forgive the colour for the way they ski! (Although I did get quite a lot of grief from my so called friends!)

Toured the Swiss side this afternoon, pistes in wonderful condition, mainly hard but very fast and very grippy. Softer on the edges. Cold first thing but sun came out and was pretty nice all afternoon. Off the sides not nice at all so didn't bother. Supposed to warm a bit and maybe snow from tomorrow afternoon. Really quite over here considering. All bon.

We had a day in St Jean d'Aulps. Late start due to a comedy of errors (including forgetting my jacket!)

Snow in good shape all the way round the circuit. Second circuit foiled by failed draglift causing big queues.

Wicked wind over the Col du Graydon but noticably warmer than yesterday. A few flakes falling as we headed back to Chatel

Lindarets, Les Crosets, Planachaux, Linga and Pre La Joux for us today.

Grippy snow almost everywhere with the odd bit of hard/scraped stuff andvery little proper ice.

A few flakes late on but the forecast snow has not arrived yet

The daylight is with us here in les gets, and the snow is falling. We were planning another trip to Swiss side today, but the snow is forecast to keep falling all day, so we'll be sticking to the local pistes. Snow-forecast says that 3-4cm is expected across PdS today, but clear for thurs&friday.

Steady light snow in Petit Chatel. Looks to be around 2 inches @ 1300m.

Visibility at least 200m to chalets across the fields.

Hopefully those with 3-day legs will see the snow and have a late start/day off. We're going for a PDS tour and hoping for prepared piste with a couple of inches on top!

Third day for us today, and a planned late start seems a good option.

A couple of delightful mornings in the Super Morzine area then down to Linarets with the kids, then two good afternoons with my mate whilst they're at lessons. Monday we headed over to the Swiss Wall where we had our bottoms sniffed by a Swiss drugs dog, then some crusty off piste interspersed with good stuff somewhere in the upper reaches of the Lindarets valley (we think).

Then yesterday we skied pretty much everything off the hauts forts lifts - the Crozets (?) itinerary was in decent nick, although they'd closed off a steep pitch near the bottom and were diverting you off onto the black run to the right. We had a look and it looked ok, and so it proved - steep, a bit icy in patches but nothing too bad.

The lesson appearsbto be that on piste everything's pretty good, off piste on southerly slopes freeze thaw has left it all a bit crusty so north facing is the order of the day, although if the expected 5cm of fresh arrives (and it's certainly been snowing quite hard at times so I'd expect everything to have been given a nice freshen up.

My first experience of half term skiing and have to say I'm amazed by how quiet it is - a couple of ten minute waits at pinch points, but everything else is queue free.

Andy, you could try taking the Chaux Fleurie lift and ski down to Plain Dranse to the right of the Rochassons piste. Gullies bumps etc and quick to get back to Avoriaz (2 lifts

Just back from a longish day. Non stop snow and windy in places (cols and ridges). Ankle deep everywhere (including on prepared pistes) and boot to knee off the sides.

Should be great tomorrow if the forecast (65% sun) is right.

Started from Barbossine (disaster - my brother lost his ski 20m above depart and had to go back down to collect it - Wally of the week award) then over to Chalet Neuf, Morgins, Champoussin, Les Crosets, Lindarets for lunch then a few runs round Plain Dranse/Pre La Joux. Not a single queue anywhere.

I was skiing like a hero (my opinion) until I decided to follow two pisteurs - major wipe out! Reverted to appropriate caution after that.

Great skiing but visibility very mixed.

When I got back to the car remeasured and there is the best part of a foot on the roof. Post van couldn't get up the hill (which was ploughed at 10.00) and the Dutch were skidding everywhere (of course).

Has any one got an opinion on skiing in Morzine in April, the snow this year makes this possible?

Well its 7 weeks away and its not the highest area but the current snow with todays top up must put it well ahead of the average year.

I'd say you're safe even if it doesn't snow again.

Wow just wow. I love snow. 6" on empty pistes on the swiss side this morning. Then skied pretty bumpy pistes around Avoriaz and Chatel and ended up in Linga about 5.30. €15 and the bus driver took pity on us and took us all the way back to Morgins. What a good day.

On the bread run. Another 2 inches overnight so I make that a foot in totalat 1300m.

Cloud at around 2200m with just the odd flake. Blasting everywhere.

Road ploughed but v slippery. Nearly on my ar$e a couple times. Wouldn't fancy it on summer tyres,

Think i did that yesterday - off the Chaux Fleurie, turn left and follow the red run for a bit before dropping off into the trees and finding some steep bits. Lovely snow, entertaining skiing.

Also did the blacks off Hauts Forts again yesterday - nightmare viz at the top but fun once I was back in the trees, and the new snow had made it a lot easier on the bumpy bits.

Just a hint of blue in the sky today - hopefully easier to see!

Still hods of fresh powder to be had - Crozets bowl was closed but we hopped over the rope and got the top bit out of the way sharpish, then went a long way left for more soft stuff, leading to an "entertaining" exit in the trees. Superb powder off the Avoriaz Cubore(?) chair - long traverse off skiers right and lots of fresh to be had with only a few tracks.

Pistes are quite lumpy with the new snow getting shoved around but lots of soft stuff to turn on.

andy from embsay, be cautious about ducking that rope. The reason for closing the bowl is usually because of the avalanche risk from above, rather than the steeper first section. It's very hard for them to control the stuff above that bowl.

The safer option for entering the bowl is to go in, skier's left, from part of the way down the arrette run. Do watch the cliffs though!

Also...

...whilst you can't imply that just because something's tracked that it's safe to ski, you should infer that if the locals haven't skied something (and they've skied other things) then there's a reason it's not been skied.

In this case it's because the off-piste that is a long traverse skiers right of Cubore on the Fornet bowl side has rocks above it that don't hold the snow well - so you get natural releases at the first sign of sun.

Anyway...

You look hungry. Do you want a sandwich? No? Are you sure? A piece of cake then? You're looking thin. Really, you're not eating enough...

...I do hope you're wearing a bobble hat when you go out in the cold like that...

Cheers FS - we were a touch concerned on the Cubore stuff, so we didn't go as far across as others had so there was less above us. Also there had been no sun at all on it so we were reasonably happy it was ok - but your points are well made. We didn't go there blithely - although the tip on the Crozets is a good 'un - we assumed the risk was in that top bowl, so gave it some beans to get out of there!

No problem andy from embsay.

Part of the decision-making in ducking ropes is being able to understand why they will have closed the run. There are some runs I'll ski if they're closed and others I won't. Renard is a good example of something I'll ski if closed as they usually close it because of the risk from above on skier's left. Rhododendrons, however, is a run to stay off following zzz's sage advice that he skied it whilst closed one day, only to find it had slid down to the grass the next day.

Anyway, note to anyone who'll listen that the avalanche forecast for tomorrow isn't great. Level 3, but with that risk on all aspects and all altitudes (which is unusual). The wind on Wed and Thu was from the N and NE - so south and south-west slopes are probably best avoided (i.e. the off-piste down the Chaux Fleurie lift).

Stay safe.

Last day for us and as the kids have finished lessons we had a group of 6 adults and 9 kids over in Les Gets. Snow on piste brilliant, off piste a bit heavy in places but plenty of fun to be had. My two did their first black run down the run next to the Rosta (?) chair, which was pretty benign to be honest, then we finished with a trip over to the Pointe du Nyon and a series of increasingly icy red runs back to Morzine.

Lovely week - two sunny days to finish with. Certainly an area we'll come back to - looks to be lots of off piste to be had in good conditions and the kids' instructor was telling us about some good lift served day tours.

A fab week for my two kids in what's effectively their first week skiing (having had a few lessons in a fridge) they both seem to be happy on anything reasonably smooth and red - we'll be back. Amazed by how quiet it is having heard horror stories about half term, and the tip to go nowhere near Changabang was a good one - it looked dreadful as we passed it...

Absolutely great conditions all week, superb. Left this morning in light snow. Just got across the Jura, where it is dumping considerably all the way from the Swiss border near vallorbe right the way to besancon. Heavy over the tops and snowing and sticking down to 400 m. Must be a great season for the small resorts of the Jura too.

Bez, Le Chaudron (on the right as you ski through the village) definitely has a great big wood burner. I think La Cremelaire directly opposite does too. High probability I'll be in one or the other over the next couple of days!

Excellent skiing at Les Gets today although the vis up at the top was of the Labrador type. Snowed pretty much all afternoon - an inch of so of powder? Superb food at La Croix Blanche as usual and surprisingly quiet - no significant queues anywhere I went.

Well some of the best conditions I've been fortunate to ski in, especially after yesterdays top-up. Beautiful powder off the top of Lindarets dropping down into Plaine Dranse. It is busy though, although saying that longest queue was only about 10 minutes. There's enough quiet pistes and queue-less lifts around if you look though.

Tagged along with Montriondskier this morning for a blast from Lindarets to Chatel and back. I should really define "blast" in advance - mogul black runs and off piste = SORE LEGS! Took Mr NN to have a go on some of it this afternoon but had to beg for mercy at 4pm and head home! Great day though - weather is glorious and the snow is fantastic!

Nadenoodlee,
Had a great time - got to practise before taking the instructor round more or less the same circuit this afternoon! Highlight of the day - being officially labelled 'a nutter' by NN after skiing over a particularly steep pitch. Mind you NN's choice of route did end up with a certain amount of tree-hugging on the way down to Linga. Up for another 'blast' tomorrow morning?

Mrs MS now renamed Maverick after buying helmet with mirrored visor this evening. Hopefully will solve the "my glasses have steamed up" moans.
