Is everyone out skiing? |
Yes, everyone (and a few dogs) was on the slopes. Fantastic weather, 10°C in the afternoon. Pistes in great condition, occasionally soft or sugary, mostly hard. Here a view from the Brandstadl above Scheffau towards the Eiberg, with the new 8-seater Osthang chairlift ...
Enjoy yourself!

Muhlbach am Hochkonig - Ski Amade: Sorry for the delay in the posting a manic few days clearing wood, combined with Fasching meant that a few things had to go on the back burner! Alas here it is, the ski and snow report. Considering that we have no had no new real snow for 2 weeks and the fact that temps have been a little on the high side it was with a little apprehension that we jumped into the bubble yesterday, after the short run down to the king cab that apprehension quickly disappeared as conditions (whilst hard first thing) are actually very good. There is the odd nasty patch about, but with decent edges and sensible wax you can whizz over these and get on your way. The slopes on the Muhlbach side of the hill are good, both the reds down into Dienten can be a challenge in the afternoon (as always) and some of the slopes in Maria Alm need a little TLC, but in general we remain in great shape and 100% open. So if you are considering coming out for a weekend blast, bring your sun cream and shades, some pocket money and enjoy! Knee-deep powder it is not, but a great opportunity to carve and catch some rays it is. Next report in 3/4 days. Duncan

Today I was able to ski with queen bodicea and her friends on the Kitzbühel Ski Safari. We started at the Hahnenkammbahn und skied over to the Panoramabahn at the south end of the Kitzbühel area and back again - a strenuous day. Pistes were again mixed, soft and hard. The weather was mixed today as well. It was warm enough when the sun peeked through but there were many more clouds than in recent days and at times there was a cold wind. However, a great day's skiing. Here's a picture looking north over the pistes of the Ski Safari from the Resterhöhe above Pass Thurn ...

espri, Looking at the cams and temps this morning it appears to be kinda clammy....10 degrees and overcast, is that right?...and everyone attending is a skier/boarder, the revelry only starts around 4-ish, allowing for a full day on what's left of the mountain!

winding down a 2 week stint here in Bad gastein. Cant remember so many consecutive days of sunshine. Last week temperatures were low and pistes were good (have skied all over gasteinertal, forstau, dachstein glacier, Muhlbach, Maria Alm). This week things have deteriated unfortunately, upper slopes still reasonable though but hard work from middle stations down. Skiing down into Dienten at 4.30 the other day was a bit of a minefield.
12 degrees at lower station today. Still.... better then being in the office behind a computer screen !

Was on the Kitzbühel Ski Safari again today with a friend, starting this time at the Fleckalmbahn and skiing to the Panoramabahn near Pass Thurn and back. Bigger crowds than I have seen for a while and waiting about 10 minutes at a few lifts. However, we enjoyed ourselves and the sun came out strong in the afternoon and it was warm again. The softer pistes may have been causing some folks trouble, for we saw the ambulance helicopter two or three times. This photo shows the middle station of the Panoramabahn near Pass Thurn (the piste 77 only goes to the middle station, not down to Hollersbach in the valley) ...

Just back from a fantastic week in Kitzbühel. Sunny and warm most of the week, just a couple of cloudy mornings. Cold overnight temperatures and very good snowmaking and piste preparation have kept most of the pistes in excellent condition. Typical spring conditions with hard crusty snow in the mornings (lovely) and soft porridgey stuff lower down in the afternoons (not so lovely). Forecast looks warmer still next week so anyone skiing then will get a great tan but might get a bit soggy if they fall over.

Sounds like a nice week, queen bodecia, but it's far too early for "typical spring conditions". It was early March last week! It's like that here, too - more like mid April.

We skied on the Steinplatte today, by Waidring in Tyrol. Apart from a cloudy spell midday, the weather was great, sun and blue skies. Pistes much as in all the last days, mostly soft. Quite quiet and no real lift queues at all.
We also skied over to the Winklmoosalm in Germany, shown in the picture below. This is a perfect beginners' area, I think, with the link to the Steinplatte allowing more challenging runs later on.

Hurtle, thanks! It was very nice - and nice to be able to sit outside at lunch - but much more like early April. I haven't skiied in those type of conditions since our second ski trip when we did go in April I haven't sorted out photos yet but I'll put some on fb when I have...

Just got back from a morning in Wagrain/Flachau, and I have to say it wasn´t too good. Slush at the first lift at 8.30 , and very busy. Temps at the top were plus 6, and it was spitting with rain when I left. We are forecast a fresh dump this Fri/Sat, and hopefully the temps will dip down again. All the valley runs are still open, but very hard going.

Got back from Ischgl on Saturday after seven days of skiing in almost perfect piste conditions. I was talking to a bar owner who said that they had only two days of snow in the last forty and for the remainder had seen blue skies. Four the first four days we didn't see even the slightest hint of a cloud and barely one for the last three. However, a combination of altitude, lowish temperatures (-2 to -7) and good grooming had maintained excellent conditions. It was a bit warmer on Thursday and Friday and the home runs were getting a little soft in late afternoon but by no means slushy. Having said that a good dump would certainly freshen things up for the rest of the season and its forecast for later in the week.

skied the morning in Zauchensee/Flachauwinkl, and have to tell it like it is, the queues were horrific. I haven´t seen it like that all year, seemed like the whole of Eastern Europe has descended. The snow was ok til lunchtime, but the queues were still long so I called it a day. Is anyone else in the skiamade area experiencing the same this week?

cathy, just back from ellmau as well. We probably weren't up as early as you but we skied from about 9/9.30 each morning and generally stayed around ellmau in the morning when it was still hard. Later we skied run 88 all the way down to the t-bar from about 11 and then headed over towards scheffau until about 2 but we didn't ski much beyond 3 on any day and we only went down to the valley at the end of the day. That was about the best we could find but I have to say all things considered it was pretty good.
Not sure how great it's going to be this week though....
Hochfilzer hotel was as good as ever.
Hard to stay away from the skiwelt.

Hi all a quick update from Mühlbach am Hochkönig, in general conditions are all very spring like at the moment and an early start is a must to get the most from the slopes, the afternoon can be hard work in heavy snow, so the bar is the best option post about 15.00.
There is snow forecast (upto 20 cms they say) but the temp needs to fall for this to have the right impact (its currently +4c outside the haus) Further report to follow once I have been out for a quick blast on Friday.

Arrived home on Sunday from a week staying with flangesax.
The snow conditions were very different to last year, but good all the same on piste. We found one small patch of powder on Monday between the trees in Zauchensee, but we sneezed and dispersed it.
Two days were spent heading towards and in and around Flachauwinkl where the conditions were heavy going after lunch, and three in Reiteralm. The snow conditions here were preferable, and the queues and amount of people much less.
A great weeks skiing, all the same!

Has been liquid state h2o falling from the sky since yesterday afternoon in schladming town. This morning looks like a more white form of h2o from around 1100m, from webcams some accumulations towards the top of the ski hills, -3 and windy. About to go for a ski. Will report back later.

Done my morning ski at schladming. Variable conditions but great fun, first ski in 7 whole weeks. Snowing quite heavy from 1100m, rain below that. Towards the top 10-15cm of fresh heavy snow. Ventured off piste, snowpack was rotten, the new wet stuff on top, and wet base, avi risk above tree line must be pretty high. Stuck to the piste, good fun in the untracked, very unforgiving, educational snow. Skied back towards the mid-station with the plan to download to town but as we approached the rain line the piste conditions were actually very good! Like just thawed out late spring morning piste which no one else had skied on, 1 or 2 cm of soft wet snow on a hard base. Was actually the best (easiest) conditions i'd ever skied the night race piste back to town in 4 seasons. That what a days rain does. More snow and cooler temps forecast for Sunday.

Zauchensee:
Much the same as waynos, said about Schaldming... stay off the steep though - lots of very fresh wet snow makes things very heavy going!
It has been snowing quite heavily there all day - with some chilled temps things could turn out nice again!
Off on a night tour at Forstau tonight... my first one!... wish me luck!

Hi everyone. My boss is kindly sending me to a meeting in Munich next Friday so Im planning to grab a days skiing in Austria afterwards. I've been to Skiwelt before in similar circumstances as the first place you come to so easy day trip from Munich, but perhaps somewhere higher would be better just now? Any suggestions welcomed!

Just back from a week in Zell.
Saturday to Wednesday - typical spring weather. Pistes were great until 10.30 ish then slush. Later on it was more like water skiing!! Yesterday it rained all day - but pistes oddly were the best of the week!! Rain continued overnight and was still going strong when I left this morning.
Skied Kitzsteinhorn on Tuesday - but it was very busy and crowded. I was hit hard by a boarder (who had the decency to accept he was at fault) - but very luckily no damage beyond a slightly painful knee - didn't stop me skiing though!! Gave the place a miss from then on.
Lower pistes in Zell develop brown holes during the day. But those magicians in the pisten bullies somehow patch it all up overnight.
Not ideal conditions - but far better than being at work

Just back from 2 days in HochOetz and Kuhtai - rain down to 1400m yesterday and today - but everything above that ( which is virtually everything anyway) was top banana stuff. A good 13cms of snow, pretty squeeky as well. I would say the conditions now are better than when I was there in the half term Feb break with the kids. Anyone going next week should have great fun in these 2 resorts

Knee deep (thigh in some spots) and even more on the glacier. Pistes are great, spongy
soft snow all round. Absolutely fantastic

For St. Patrick's Day, I skied in the Kitzbühel/Kirchberg area yesterday, as did most of Ireland, it seemed, for I most often heard Irish accents on the pistes (not to mention skiers with the flag flying). The Irish brought their weather too, for it was rather wet. Sleet/light snow up the top, rain down below. Visibility was poor higher up, in the mists, but there were many fewer skiers around than the week before. Although the race piste was broken in places, it was still possible to ski down the Family-Streif run to Kitzbühel without any problems. The other valley runs, Maierl, Pengelstein and Fleckalm were all complete too, although the latter was rather the worse for wear. Only about 2-3 cm new snow, though. Here's a view looking up towards the Hausbergkante on the race course from the beginner's area in Kitz.
Wasn't the best day's skiing but enjoyable enough. However, I could compensate by calling in at O'Flannigans for a Guinness at the end of the day. Didn't meet any snowHeads (my fault).

Yay!... Winter is back (if only for a few days!)
Last night there was a good dump accross all of Ski Amadé. I was on a 'moon-lit' night tour (with no moon light due to snow clouds and snow!) and by about 10pm there was 10cm of fresh (slightly damp) powder.
On the ski down the snow above about 1400 was sticky pow.
So I recon a nice factory-reset has been dumped accross the region (I expect off-piste is still pretty cruddy) but this should sort the pistes out until season's end..... I hope!

Snow update from Mühlbach am Hochkönig - the snow has been falling for 48 hrs now and whilst its a little bit wet lower down the pistes at the top of the HKR are in great condition with 25 cms of fresh. Once this dump has been bashed and moved around the hill we should have some great conditions through to Easter. The slopes are also v quiet at this time of year so its a great time to come skiing if only for a long weekend. Enjoy! Duncan www.hauswasserbauer.com
