Let's hope...
...though, given that I'm driving down with, amongst other things, 8 cases of very (and I do mean very) nice wine means my outturn scenario for Saturday is looking pretty good.

garyscott20, We just went to get the kids skis for the season in Intersport in Morzine and he asked when we wanted them for (i.e. bindings mounted etc) and we said Saturday in case they opened something a bit of gaellic shrugging and a phone call and he said he would have them ready for Saturday morning at 10am - what we can read into this - well your guess is as good as mine!
We (the local touroperators/hotels) usually get an email from the Tourist Office if/when anything is going to happen and usually with about 24hrs notice so watch this page on Friday!!

Thanks snowandtrek. That sounds like good news. You guys must be excited and looking forward to a really good season. We have a little chalet in Les Gets on the Chavannes(up near Hastings), and this year we are starting my daughter out on ski's, so we are very excited. My son is a bit young at the moment, but I am sure he will keep us busy on the tobaggon again. I will be keeping an eye out for that announcement.

A colleague in Les Gets has just confirmed that the resort is planning to open this weekend (and every other weekend through to the official start of the season assuming conditions hold out). Bit gutted my first trip out isn't until 6th Dec!

Excellent news ctskifam, will have to look into an earlier trip as my first weekend out is the 15th December.

garyscott20, just Saturdays and Sundays at the mo but I reckon they may stretch it out if the snow is good enough to generate a bit more demand - they'll be desperate to claw back some revenue after last season's poor lift pass receipts. Although Les Get's official opening is 22nd we've been told that a decent proportion of the area should be up and running full time from 15th Dec.

ctskifam, now I really am excited. Almost the whole area open by the 15th and most probably the mountain almost all to ourselves

I see they have now updated the www.sagets.fr website which confirms that they will indeed be opening a few runs this weekend. It looks like you will be able to get the Chavannes Express up, ski the blues and greens at the top of the Chavannes as well as ski all the way down into the village. It doesn't look as if the bowl will be open this weekend.
But heck that has got to be better than nothing.

Feel free to accuse me of blatant commercialism but a certain Les Gets based family ski operator has some cracking deals on short breaks for the week beginning 15th Dec.... I'd go myself if I wasn't busy trying to flog them!

Latest news on Avoriaz is that it will be opening for the weekend of 24th November - which for me is a bummer as I am back in the UK Christams Shopping arrggghhh - Mr Snow and Trek thinks it is very amusing........

Was just looking at the snowHeads wiki. Maybe it could be worthwhile making up a FAQ for Les Gets/Morzine/Avoriaz/PdS, since there's a lot of handy info in this thread (particulary best ways to access Avoriaz from Les Gets), and there's the best places to eat in Les Gets/Morzine thread (need to search for it again).
Dunno if the policy is to create one per village, or if special dispensation can be given for PdS?

DallyPaul, snowandtrek, I hope we will be going over December 7th for a long weekend. Spoke to Tourist Office and they said that resort will be open a week earlier than the "official openening" 15th Dec. What is open next weekend? Cant wait.

Just a quick report back from my day's skiing over at Champery. BRILLIANT!!!!! Clear blue skies, lots of lovely powder, hardly anyone about, and rosti for lunch. Does it get any better?
Also according to the ski club website, once again we have got a pretty good start here compared to some of the big gun areas in France:
Tignes (30/40cm)
Val Thorens (30/70cm)
Alpe d’Huez (30/45cm)
Whereas Chatel has 40/85cm!
Happy days....

Bit of a contrast from the past couple of years: Champéry at the end of January has struggled. Good work on PhotoTim's part for going to Fernie for the season then
Will be watching what happens in the PdS with interest...

Well, looks like PdS might be getting a bit of rain this week, so let's keep an eye on the snow-line. If we can make it through to thursday/friday, i think we'll be in the clear. Fingers crossed. If the worst comes to the worst, we had snow yesterday in London, so i'll just bring some of that over in me hand-luggage.

Amongst my "chores" on Saturday I managed to get in a couple of hours on the snow. Frankly. Blooming marvelous.
I didn't get out until 14:00, so missed any powder (ok, so I wasn't prepared to hike...), but the runs were holding up well - loose snow over a firm base above around 1500m and firm, icy piste below 1500m. It was pretty crowded - and a tad scary at times (and that was just my skiing!) - but still "pas mal" as the rather hard-to-please French bloke I spoke to on the second chairlift emoted. "Just don't tell your English friends..." he added. So. Our secret...
Avoriaz is going to be superb when it opens I reckon.
