Jack all visibility at the moment though. Played in the lindarets bowl until a quick coffee stop just now. Fingers crossed it lifts for this afternoons lesson.

Very cloudy in Les Gets this morning - lovely snow though, and a few runs down the Melezes after meeting some friends in the Paika for coffee. Now home and big snow flakes coming down.

I have been to Chatel twice now - will be there in a week for my 3rd trip. Stunning place! Having been to L2A and 3v's as well, I still think Chatel wins. Anyway, my wife and I are fairly reasonable Red/Black skiers/boarders. However, she is keen to start moving to having a bit of a play in the "parks". How good do you have to be to use the Air Bags that are dotted around in the PDS as we have never tried it? We have always watched and thought wow they look good fun. Sadly, it is just SWMBO wanting to do it this year as I am recovering from an operation!
Sorry to post in a "weather related" forum but there appears to be a a lot of PDS experts here.
This is going to be the slowest week in history!!!!!!!

At the moment this snowfall looks like being a light or very light one. Forecasts have downgraded since yesterday and the reasonably reliable NAE and Euro4 charts (used by met Office) have been saying 5cm or less since yesterday morning - whereas GFS is still suggesting perhaps 10cm. GFS is not used by the Met Office for any short term forecasting whatsoever - so the final snowfall total will be interesting - a sort of UK vs US model battle.
Cham Meteo also downgraded their forecast from yesterday (they were saying up to 20cm) to zero cm today.
Snowing very lightly at the moment at 1200m - less than 1cm so far and radar not looking v optimistic. Lets hope for a surprise!!!

Strange - it was throwing it down in Chatel town when I left there at 2pm, everything completely white - back here in Morzine, light rain and warm! The drive over saw lots of precipitation, and heavy, heavy fog/cloud.
Hve been accessing from the Chatel end for the last 4 days. Friday was an awesome powder day - plenty of fluffy, feathery off-piste, and pistes in great condition. The off piste is now a bit crusty, but pistes are still in great condition...

Not really thrown it down today - it has always been light snow or a mix of snow and graupel - about 1cm wet covering in Chatel at 1200m at the moment - but still snowing - so there is still a chance of a decent covering tonight. Been in Chatel and Linga areas today - so can't say whats happening at Pre la Joux.

Snowing in Morzine now but has been mist or rain of the day. Skied Mt Chery this morning in terrible visibility but great snow. Chamossiere in the afternoon, again decent snow and flat light. Les Creux was more fun than Arbis. Skied back via top of the Pleney and the Stade. Wet but easily manageable. Hoping the snow keeps going all night. Apres in La Ruade as good as ever.

Snow has pepped up a bit here at 1200m in Chatel - so still the chance of a nice surprise this evening and tonight and latest radar images are a bit more promising.

Chatel Snow, what are these radar images you talk about? Are they just the satellite images? Do you have a link to what you look at? I'm stuck on snow-forecast.com and GFS chart...

clong, Don't bother with snow-forecast for snow amounts - it is useful for suggesting when it might snow and for freezing levels, but it is not a reliable tool for snowfall forecasting from my personal experience. GFS ditto - the good thing about GFS is that it come out every 6 hours and all the info is free - but remember that there are other models eg ECMWF and Met Office etc which are often quite different to GFS at relatively short ranges. Also note that snow-forecast .com uses GFS as its input data.
For Radar - here are some links...

There are issues with these radars for mountainous areas - but they can be v useful

ardbroilach, the snow today and tonight will be inconsequential and expect another day of cloud and flat light on Tuesday. Wednesday looks sunny and then the predictions are looking like a reasonable amount of snow to low levels at the end of the week. The small dump on Friday made a surprising amount of difference to conditions on and off piste. The lower slopes are in need of a bit of a top up!

2 to 3cm on various surfaces this morning and the odd flake still falling as v cloudy / foggy. Should be a bit more higher up which will check on this morning. Looks like those 2 Met office models (NAE and Euro4) had this particular snowfall fairly well nailed as far back as Sunday afternoon.
The outlook, which has been flip flopping all over the place, has flipped back to a snowy outlook this morning on both the Meteo France and Meteo Suisse outlooks - with a very snowy Thursday night Friday, however, the GFS is not as snowy as it was showing last night for that period. This potential snowfall will come into the NAE and Euro4 modelling range during Wednesday.
Edit - just a bit of extra info on the NAE - it is the model that the BBC / Met Office base their rainfall graphics on the TV forecasts - so its by no means perfect, but at a shorter range (48hrs) is meant to be far more accurate than the GFS precipitation forecasts - so one to bear in mind. The Euro4 model is supposedly higher resolution again and is referred to by Met Office forecasters on weather forums. When I get the chance I'll post the links directly to these charts.

Pretty peed off about the revised forecasts- it had looked amazing for the weekend and I was super excited about getting the powder skis out!!!
Still, it's looking like the snow is okay, with more on the way for next week.
We plan to book a guide for one day if there is any decent snowfall, does anybody know any decent guides who would be able to provide hire of transponders etc? We are all fairly competent skiers but don't have the kit and would like to learn the proper way..

We're heading out tomorrow, so actually quite happy if they've dialled back the volume of dumpiness for later in the week, as we wouldn't want to be unable to get up the hill.
Hoping to get at least a couple of days of decent visibility, as most of our team are new to PdS so we'd like to get over to Chatel and Swizzleland.

As far as I can tell there is still a good chance of plenty of snow Thursday night and into the weekend. GFS has dialled it back but some of the other forecasts are looking good (eg Meteo Suisse and Meteo France). It highlights the large amount of uncertainty for the end of the week.

Chatel Snow, which sites would you recommend for PdS area? I tend to look at cham 5 day forecast - they're saying "mostly sunny". For the end of the week just now.

andy from embsay, Cham Meteo is normally excellent - but has been misfiring over the last couple of days - just like most of the rest to be honest as the models have been all over the place and there has been a higher than normal level of uncertainty in the forecasts. NAE and Euro4 have been the best at predicting this snowfall.
The list I currently use is :
- Meteo France Snowfall
- Meteo France Prevision (has snow/rain limits)
- Meteo France Avalanche Bulletin
- Chamonix-meteo.com
- Meteo Suisse text forecast
- Meteo Suisse for Morgins
- Meteo-Alpes.org
- NAE, Euro 4, UKMO & GFS raw data charts
and the links are on http://www.chatelweb.com/snow_forecast.php - just scroll down a couple of forecasts.
I don't use the GFS ensemble charts for snowfalls as they are fairly hopeless and confusing unless you know exactly what the various colours of lines are - and what they mean (and the majority of those squiggly lines are totally irrelevant ensemble members)! They can be useful for picking up trends - but as they flip flop all over the place every 6 hours - you are probably better off just looking at the main GFS operational run that can be found on sites such as meteociel.fr
Hope this is useful.

Very cloudy today - we went over to Switzerland - up the poma by the Chavanettes, the chair wasn't running at that time, about 9.45. Halfway up the visibility just disappeared and really up in the clouds at the top. We went on the chair down the wall, could just see at the bottom and then it cleared as we went on to the Ripaille poma. We had decided to do the long Ripaille run today so carried on with that - luckily we know it quite well so roughly have an idea of where the bends are but it didn't really clear till we were close to the second café. Glad to dive in there for chocolat chaud. Lovely ski round after that through the trees and good exercise for the upper arms when poling required. Very heavy cloud again going up the lifts and there seemed to be a lot of people taking of their skis and walking up the slope at Planachaux. Worked our way back and the top two thirds of the Abricotine were again clothed in clouds and then it cleared - not gradually just suddenly.
Temperature seems to have hovered around zero all day.

Definitely felt colder yesterday and some fresh snow to enjoy. Visibility very patchy everywhere which made for an interesting Coupe du Monde in the afternoon. Planning a PDS circuit today to take advantage of the clear skies.

Wow, stunning again. I keep looking at the daily report pictures thinking "We definitely need to see that/go there!".
The GFS outlook is irritating me, it keep shifting the snowfall back, the big peak on the graph now looks like 27th early doors. I had hoped the snowfall event Friday/Saturday would be the big one so we can enjoy it!
Chatel Snow, Thanks for sticking the links up on your forecast, very informative.

Also, can anybody point out any decent spots for off-piste that is easily accessible and reasonably safe, by off-piste standards? Tree runs etc. Looks like the powder skis will be out, woop! (I also got carried away and bought a GoPro)
