Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

That's really interesting, thanks for posting DB - could do with a sticky thread with that table just for people's reference in future, with the caveat and understanding of course that its all hugely variable.

Reading the thread with that interesting table in is quite fascinating, in the light of this current discussion. It is crossly claimed that "most recommendations are for France" though that's not actually true. There are as many for other countries including Austria, Italy and Switzerland. There is also one specific recommendation AGAINST the Espace Killy (from me, as it happens). And the hoary old "Austrian pistes are nice smooth pastures and French ones jagged rocks" is trotted out again (by Mr Swiller) and readily refuted by rob@rar. The claim that the tree line is lower in Austria doesn't seem to have much basis in reality either, judging by that thread (though I have no idea what it is in either country - it varies a fair bit round the bits of France I know).
The table does not actually back up the general claim that lower altitude snow is more reliable across Austria than in France (though I have long believed that to be the case) as it lists Vorarlberg, Tyrol and Carinthia as having the same "natural snow reliability line" as Isere, Savoie and Haute Savoie. I am rather dubious about that table though - not sure it can be trusted. There are some local variations which are maybe more significant than those very broad brush distinctions between regions - and aspect makes a huge difference. Does anyone know how reliable that table is?
So not too sure where that gets us, overall.
Meteo France do an interesting "hauteur de neige hors piste" which looks at the south and north aspects of a large number of mountain areas throughout the country. Can make fascinating reading. Do the Swiss or Austrian services publish anything similar?

Scarpa, excellent. I've had to make do with one of your mildly pornographic - but very beautiful - poems instead! But they're a little too gloomy for everyday use.

Thanks! You know how this is: early morning, this noisy alarm wakes you up; yawning and stretching, lazy you get to the window, slowly open a curtain and see this......... wow...............
Oh, absolutely... and I had great skiing partners there, too...

Zauchensee, Tauernkarbahn 6 (I think) -seater, get yourself up to the black 10, and two blue's 11 and 10. Straight ahead under the small wooden arcade, and enjoy: ice cold beer and hot goulash soup ! BTW: blue 11 is just great for fine-tuning carving technique (look who is talking )
