Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Might leave it until tomorrow - I need some pictures for this website article and photos of whiteout and rain aren't likely to tempt anyone into skiing.

Bus service from Lyon (and Geneva) airports are good and more reliable than the train. Trains are great when they work, but I expect they'll be more strikes coming up any day now...

Any chance of some sun, weather has been generally pants this 'summer' - I feel like I've returned to Blighty!

Red Dave, The weekend looks better. Are you coming up?

Butterfly, Lovely sunshine at Royal Ascot today - I was a bit jealous! It was pouring and snowing and foggy, but hey! we had freshies on 16th June. I skied bits of the mountain I've never skied before in summer, and tomorrow is supposed to be a better day. Very Happy

Very full report with loads of pix (15 I think) on www.easiski.com/blog1

I forgot to say originally, that there were more people up there than I expected. Lots of clubs, including one getting the kids on tele gear Very Happy and a number of ENSA formation groups + a surprising number of us 'ordinary' skiers. Very Happy

It's my daughter's 3rd birthday on Saturday so I think not! Will probably head over sometime in July though as redundancy looms at the end of the month.

I've decided not to go up. It's still raining, snowing and foggy, so I'll wait until the weather improves I think. Sad

The morning was exactly like yesterday, as I said earlier, so I didn't go up but it turned sunny just before they would have closed the lifts rolling eyes and we had a nice 3 hours of sunshine before it started to rain again. Sad

The good thing it that it's been chilly all day, so I gues the rain/snow level is fairly low. I'm hoping for slightly clearer weather tomorrow, in which case I'll be up there with camera. Very Happy OTOH the forecast is for another day like today but better from Saturday, in which case it's more DIY tomorrow!! rolling eyes rolling eyes

Lovely morning, but I was a bit late to sleep last night and didn't wake up until nearly half past 8! Shocked I'm going up as soon as I've finished my brekkie, but don't know about parking places near the lifts - Mondial du VTT = heaving Sad

I don't know but you'd want to be very careful at altitude at the moment.

I'm amazed at your photos, I've been watching the glacier webcams and the visibility must have been about 20 meters all day. I'm surprised they even opened the glacier under those conditions.

I think I will head to the beach this weekend.

Yesterday the viz wasn't nearly as bad as it seemed to be. You could see where you're going. Why wouldn't they open? They open in winter in similar conditions, and there are a goodly number of peeps up there - many more than I expected before tomorrow. There's lots of good snow, it's not too cold, and it's not raining.

OTOH it's foggy up there at the moment, and I won't bother to go up unless it clears.

In winter there is snow down to village level so lots of skiing where there are some features to get an idea of where you are. Opening the glacier in this kind of visibility seems like a recipe for problems.

Personally I admire you for going out in those conditions, although if you have clients you have to and you can always find some exercises to do whatever the conditions.

davidof, No clients, but blogs to write and photos to take. Shocked Also, of course, after what? 5 weeks of not skiing I did want to get up there. The forecast looks better for next week, and cool (good for the snow), so I'm hopeful that I will actually be able to see the glacier before too long. The runs down to 2,600m have plenty of features and there was much less fog below 3,000m.

It seems to have cheered up a bit now it's closed! Typical! rolling eyes

Snow almost down to the village this morning. Deffo going up but need to wrap up as cold and windy up there. Ooohhh nice!

We are driving down on Friday from the Eurotunnel (leaving Calais prob about 9am). The only other time I have driven we took 3 days over it and detoured for sight-seeing, then we drove back up via the Black Forest & Koln. That means we've zilch experience of doing a direct route. What is/is not recommended? Google Maps suggests A26: Reims, Troyes, Dijon, Lyon. Is that the best choice? Also what's the approx toll cost? [Our route back will be slightly different, but not very as we are staying 5 days in Epernay].

Thats the route we took this season and its plain sailing to be honest. Only trouble we had was on the way back when google maps told us to take an exit just past grenoble which ended up taking us on one almighty detour.
If you don't have one already I would definately recommend getting another French Road Map just in case of detours etc.... also found that on the smaller roads the numbers on Google Maps didn;t always match with what they actually were.

We stuck to the speed limit all the way down, and the tolls were approx £80 each way.

Butterfly, Only recommendation I would make is to take the A39 past Dijon rather than the A6/A46. This is far quieter and brings you in on the right side of Lyon for LDA.

Butterfly, A26, A5, then A31, turn off towards Bourg en Bresse onto the A39 (signposted Geneve, Grenoble) ,A40, A42, then A432 (past Lyon St Exupery), then A48 and A480. Take exit 8 from the Rocade Sud round Grenoble. You only need a very slight detour to go to Epernay on your way back, taking the St Gibrien/Chalons exit from the A26 , you can use the same autoroutes.

There were roadworks around Reims and also around the toll booths just after Lyon St Exupery. Tolls are around 69 euros each way. If you use a route planner it will probably not send you via the A39 though it is by far the quietest and quickest option (unless a lorry catches fire and you spend three hours sitting on the central reservation rolling eyes ) .

Butterfly, It's very simple, but you shouldn't worry about the road numbers! Follow signs to:
Reims
Troyes
Dijon
Grenoble/Geneva (this is the turning to Bourg en Bresse)
Rocade Sud (Grenoble)
Briancon
LDA!

DO NOT TAKE THE OLD ROAD SOUTH TO LYON (Beaune) as it brings you through the industrial area to the east of Lyon, 2 land road, concrete walls and zillions of trucks. Shocked

Alternatively, Lyon is signposted from Reims if not further north, so just follow those until south of Dijon. There's a slightly cheaper services for petrol just north of Dijon, and the Bresse one has nice parking by a forest. Very Happy In a car 8 - 10 hours from Calais. It takes me about 11 - 12 in the van, but that's by myself and stopping regularly for coffee and eye breaks!

Lovely day again today. Clear in the morning for a change too. Very Happy I got to use the new beginners area and tow with my students today, and skied down to 2,600m at 13.30. Of course the snow was deffo slushy by then, and I did find some stones Sad not many, but still .... OTOH it wasn't any worse that mid-afternoon at the end of the season and it was 10x better than the afternoon snow at Val T when I've been there for the EOSBs!!

Whitegold, well ... last year we had 160cms on the glacier on opening day and very little at 2,600m. this year we have 270cms on the glacier and 80cms at 2,600m. It sort of looks as though they're thinking of opening the Toura area (pisting going on). It's fine and all 3 runs there are complete. Very Happy No-one can remember it being so good, and certainly not post 2003. You need to check out my blog to see the zillions of pix!

I didn't go up today, spent the morning feeling rough and the afternoon mowing the grass (can't call it a lawn) which made me feel even rougher!! Work again tomorrow, and I should even get paid! Very Happy Butterfly arriving probably tomorrow evening as well (although might be Sat morning). Very Happy Very Happy All good.

Another nice day today, possibly a bit too hot in the morning. We had a breakdown of the Jandri Express first leg this morning which meant a delay getting up as the white eggs and cable car are much slower. Still - at least we have alternatives, there are a few glaciers I've been to where if the bottom lift breaks, that's it for the day. They fixed it for coming down time, and ran the lifts on the glacier for another hour till 13.30.

It was quiet all morning (maybe some gave up?), and the snow was fine down Roche Mantel and Signal, although after 11.30 Signal was a bit slushy. Lovely snow though and still skiing easily down to 2,600m Very Happy

Report of our adventures and lots of pix on my blog at www.easiski.com/blog1 however, just to keep Whitegold happy
