Lizzard, Are you coming up? David Ash is here and going up early. I'm hoping for about 8.00, but that might be ambitious.

Might leave it until tomorrow - I need some pictures for this website article and photos of whiteout and rain aren't likely to tempt anyone into skiing.

Bus service from Lyon (and Geneva) airports are good and more reliable than the train. Trains are great when they work, but I expect they'll be more strikes coming up any day now...
Any chance of some sun, weather has been generally pants this 'summer' - I feel like I've returned to Blighty!

Red Dave, The weekend looks better. Are you coming up?

It's my daughter's 3rd birthday on Saturday so I think not! Will probably head over sometime in July though as redundancy looms at the end of the month.

By the time I got up to the top the fog had come in , but the snow was very good all over, and quite firm with spring top covering. There's a full report with pix and even a video on www.easiski.com/blog1
Here, however, is a pic of a big slide on Rachas - what was I saying on Wednesday? You'd have to be mad to risk skiing it ....

I don't know but you'd want to be very careful at altitude at the moment.
I'm amazed at your photos, I've been watching the glacier webcams and the visibility must have been about 20 meters all day. I'm surprised they even opened the glacier under those conditions.
I think I will head to the beach this weekend.

davidof, If you didn't read the Weds report then you wouldn't know what I said!
Yesterday the viz wasn't nearly as bad as it seemed to be. You could see where you're going. Why wouldn't they open? They open in winter in similar conditions, and there are a goodly number of peeps up there - many more than I expected before tomorrow. There's lots of good snow, it's not too cold, and it's not raining.
OTOH it's foggy up there at the moment, and I won't bother to go up unless it clears.

In winter there is snow down to village level so lots of skiing where there are some features to get an idea of where you are. Opening the glacier in this kind of visibility seems like a recipe for problems.
Personally I admire you for going out in those conditions, although if you have clients you have to and you can always find some exercises to do whatever the conditions.

davidof, Not great, but I did find some nice snow where it had blown in. Two runs down to 2,600m was enough though! Sunny supposedly tomorrow. Pretty pix and report on my blog www.easiski.com/blog1

Ooohhh nice!
We are driving down on Friday from the Eurotunnel (leaving Calais prob about 9am). The only other time I have driven we took 3 days over it and detoured for sight-seeing, then we drove back up via the Black Forest & Koln. That means we've zilch experience of doing a direct route. What is/is not recommended? Google Maps suggests A26: Reims, Troyes, Dijon, Lyon. Is that the best choice? Also what's the approx toll cost? [Our route back will be slightly different, but not very as we are staying 5 days in Epernay].

Thats the route we took this season and its plain sailing to be honest. Only trouble we had was on the way back when google maps told us to take an exit just past grenoble which ended up taking us on one almighty detour.
If you don't have one already I would definately recommend getting another French Road Map just in case of detours etc.... also found that on the smaller roads the numbers on Google Maps didn;t always match with what they actually were.
We stuck to the speed limit all the way down, and the tolls were approx £80 each way.

Butterfly, Only recommendation I would make is to take the A39 past Dijon rather than the A6/A46. This is far quieter and brings you in on the right side of Lyon for LDA.

Butterfly, A26, A5, then A31, turn off towards Bourg en Bresse onto the A39 (signposted Geneve, Grenoble) ,A40, A42, then A432 (past Lyon St Exupery), then A48 and A480. Take exit 8 from the Rocade Sud round Grenoble. You only need a very slight detour to go to Epernay on your way back, taking the St Gibrien/Chalons exit from the A26 , you can use the same autoroutes.
There were roadworks around Reims and also around the toll booths just after Lyon St Exupery. Tolls are around 69 euros each way. If you use a route planner it will probably not send you via the A39 though it is by far the quietest and quickest option (unless a lorry catches fire and you spend three hours sitting on the central reservation ) .

DO NOT TAKE THE OLD ROAD SOUTH TO LYON (Beaune) as it brings you through the industrial area to the east of Lyon, 2 land road, concrete walls and zillions of trucks.

Thanks - I think I remember that bit as we spent some time in the wine villages south of Beaune & then gently headed towards Lyon. Thanks also for the petrol tip.

I didn't actually go up today in the end. I had too much else to do. However I'm very excited that I've got some work tomorrow! so will definitely be going up then.
Pic was taken through my kitchen window as the Venosc mist was evaporating. You can see it bigger on my blog if you want.

Another nice day today, possibly a bit too hot in the morning. We had a breakdown of the Jandri Express first leg this morning which meant a delay getting up as the white eggs and cable car are much slower. Still - at least we have alternatives, there are a few glaciers I've been to where if the bottom lift breaks, that's it for the day. They fixed it for coming down time, and ran the lifts on the glacier for another hour till 13.30.
It was quiet all morning (maybe some gave up?), and the snow was fine down Roche Mantel and Signal, although after 11.30 Signal was a bit slushy. Lovely snow though and still skiing easily down to 2,600m
Report of our adventures and lots of pix on my blog at www.easiski.com/blog1 however, just to keep Whitegold happy
