Did you hear a whooshing sound over your head as you typed that sentence?
And a fitness video to the tune of Jolene by Dolly Parton. Really? Are you even half aware? I haven't laughed so much in ages. Thank you.

Dr John, hmm ... a bit harsh, me-thinks. Perhaps starting a thread on something you're not that interested in, wasn't the best plan? And certainly no need to get all catty about it

abj, possibly, but I am very interested in the topic, (just for the record I'm fit and active and have no problem skiing all day). The original question (which seems to have got lost in the vitriol) was about specific ski training and the effect on a recreational skier, not an invitation to a childish p!ssing contest about who can bench-press the heaviest weights or do the most hardcore training. As previously insinuated, a perfectly good conversation was hijacked by a fool who thinks that everyone who doesn't share his devotion to the gym worthy of scorn. Not the most enlightened attitude, to say the least. Shame really.

Mr John you keep goading snowpatrol and noisy as he is you don't have to keep poking and anyway this thread is too messed up now to be useful...
Shame, I like talking about snow training and think I have stuff to learn and give. Another time maybe. This thread reminds me of some usenet groups in the early 90s when I was a kid

colincrist, Hm, really. I think Mr snowpatrol is the one with the OTT posts. We are talking about a recreational skiier here. I'm sure if Dr John, had 2 hours spare a day then he could live up to SP expectations but for most, this is not an option

Really ? then why the sarcastic reply to posters who were just giving their view on your original question

I'm confused - can someone just run the olympic training regime vs. heavy drinking by me again? I am certain that in the past I was advised that the two don't necessarily combine to give the best results?

i bet you wear gloves in the gym too? i hope they match your purse...and you do arm curls as well i bet...fag...
|
snowpatrol, arm curls are way too strenuous, its better when you can lie down or at least sit on a swiss ball or something. In fact, a nice pilates class including a relaxation session is even better, followed by a soy milk smoothie to get the oestregen levels up, don't you think...
Actually, I am more than interested in what you (or your mate, mark rippetoe) is saying on the subject of partial squats. I used to enjoy full squats regularly, then trashed my knee climbing the matterhorn. Since then, numerous physios have said to do the partial squats & keep away from full ones, but after 4 years I made little progress, the affected leg is still way smaller than the other one and completely out of balance in muscular terms (despite the orthopedic surgeon saying the joint is fine now)...
So i'm not going to argue too much that partials are great, in fact I am more than tempted to give the rippetoe programme a go - will let you know how it goes. We'll see what the result is, trashed knees, or rebuilt thighs...

gra, ps....i like that "trashed my knee climbing the matterhorn" bit....i had my patella smashed, but it was done on the rugby pitch by a wee skinny winger who weighed about 8 stone dripping wet...he decided my knee was too pretty so jumped on it for me...i like your story much better....

I did already, hence the mention - he reckons its great for blokes to grow t!ts with, something to do with the isoflavones having an effect equivalent to oestregen.
Then again, he also recommends a gallon of full fat milk per day, not sure if he's serious on that one...

well there were no dramatic falls to liven up the story, more it was the psycho zermatt guide, who thought we'd be first out of the hut at 03:30 and first ones down 6 hrs later (guidebook time is 12 hrs up & down). Awesome experience, but tricky descent when completely wasted, leading to ligaments & meniscus doing stuff they should never have to do if the leg muscles were working properly, & an appointment with the orthopods a week or so later...

gra, he is...i did it sept to dec 2008...it does what it is meant to do...increases weight and therefore strength rapidly...he also advocates chocolate milk (which is what i now use, although only 1 litre per day) for immediately after training, due to its ideal protein / carbs / fat ratio

gra, .....dont want to seem to be telling my granny how to suck eggs, but you might want to check out the "hatch squat" programme, devised by mike burgener....it's an excellent twice a week programme which runs for 12 weeks, involving front and back squats and will rapidly build your quads / hammies and increase your 1 rep max total....

snowpatrol, i'm with you on the Olympic lifts. Dead-lifts and squats are my favourite past times.

For a weeks ski holiday general good health and fitness is a very good start!!!! As has been mentioned you are on holiday and not in the olympics so very specified training may not be nesessary although the fitter you are the better you will be!
It does always amaze me how many people don't do any exercise all year and expect to be able to partake in a physical sport for 6 full days in a row without injury or soreness!!!
Happy training!!!

You know it makes sense.
|
snowpatrol, specific exercises for the sport or activity replicating those movements and stresses placed on your body is the best way to train.
The clean and jerk, squat and deadlift are all excellent strength exercises which will work your entire body and they could form a good part of a training programme, but core exercises, stretching and cross training cardio exercises are also fundamental to any all round training programme.

Specific training is best.
Stand in a deep freeze with welding clamps on each foot wearing your best suit and tear up twenty pound notes while total strangers knock you over.

Touchguru, for sure. My pre-season training has involved 50/50 ration of legs and core strength training along with lots of intense full body stretching. I never do cardio in the gym though, that's what the hill next to my house is for!

Touchguru, yep totally agree... but i find that my core strength is increased by performing olympic lifts and doing some work on gymnastic rings without specialising on specific core work...what type of things do you and Liveezy,do to work your core?

snowpatrol, Yea man. Mostly knees to elbows(my fav) and occasionally oblique exercises (side lifts and wood chop etc.) but i find it real hard to fatigue my obs. The only reason for doing this specific work at the moment though is so i can perform the human flag...
I dont bother with my back though. Like you said DL's pump it pretty good. Do you not?

Liveezy,.... knees to elbows....nice...it's a killer...my forearms usually give way before anything else though...yeah heavy dl's are plenty for the back...some assistance exercises like good mornings i'll do occasionally too...and chins every 10 days or so...good to see some others on here doing old skool stuff...it beats sitting on isolation machines..they are a cop out...

Liveezy, sounds like a good mix you have got there
snowpatrol, my core work currently consists of a number of things but a few exercises are:
The plank with feet on the black side of a BOSU and hands on a 3 or 5kg medicine ball, then push ups from this position.
Plank on SWISS ball
Obliques raises with hand/elbow on BOSU and feet on a bench.
Squats on swiss ball, one legged squats on BOSU
Russian Twists and Lateral rolls on swiss ball
AB roll outs
One leg balance on BOSU and catch and pass a 5kg ball etc etc
My core work is always done before my strength workouts.
Saying that, I always (try!!) engage my core when doing any weights or other exercise which by definition also helps strengthens your core.

|
|

snowpatrol, Yea for sure. Free weights are the only way to go. But then if your not a gym freak like we clearly are then they are safe and easy and require little creativity. For me though, thinking of ways to change my workout is what motivates me and keeps things interesting. If your struggling for grip then make a few trips to your local climbing wall. It rips your forearms in no time!!!
Touchguru, sounds like a few nice exercises. I did a cycle of "Obliques raises with hand/elbow on BOSU and feet on a bench", just stopped as it got boring. Moved on to Db side raises and wood chops. Been thinking a lot about hanging leg twists with legs attached to a cable.. Love to balance on the swiss ball/med ball/wobble board between heavy sets...
