Megamum, it's not been derision, on the whole, just the kind of questions which you'd need answered before you could decide whether you'd apply for the job. The OP has decided he is not prepared to discuss any such details in this thread - which is fair enough, but rather negates the point of having a thread at all. The only person I've treated with derision is the one who implied that keeping a family home clean was a matter of "20 minutes with a vacuum on a Thursday" and said that 30 minutes should be ample to shop for the food needed to feed a family and their visitors for a weekend. That poster resolutely refused to answer when I asked him how long he usually took to clean his oven.

At the risk of rehashing last year's thread... I guess that's me to whom you refer. As mentioned last year, whom do you know who cleans their oven every week; not even my mother does! Particularly when it's only used a maximum of two nights a week (save for 4 weeks of the year). I refuse to accept that adding a family of 4 into the equation significantly increases the amount of housework above and beyond that which one does oneself.
If you want to do a season you can:
1. Go work for a TO. Unless you are a trained chef like pamw's son who can command a decent salary plus a kitchen bitch, chances are you get to ski 4-5 afternoons a week, only have one night a week off, and end up sharing a room with no window with 4 other bodies. Oh yes, and you're paid £40 a week, plus a lift pass, plus flights and you can scrounge the food. So that's maybe worth £100 a week.
2. Go work for Nix. Ski 5 days a week (save for the holiday weeks). Get an entire 2 bed flat and bathroom to yourself, plus the run of a chalet during the week. Plus jollity from a REW and his charming family who turn up to keep you company at weekends. £100 a week down compared to option 1.
3. Go and rent a place on your own and ski 7 days a week. Nix thought his slave last year had cabin fever; imagine it in a studio flat, two rings, no oven, a monkish cell. And on your own for an entire season. Skiing 7 days a week as well must begin to pall... And without a 'job', you'd have nothing to whinge about to the other people there all season... I guess £300-£400 pounds a week down on option 2? And twice that if you rent somewhere halfway nice?
I know which one would suit ME best. But the idea of sharing a room with strangers is a massive turn off to me, as is the idea of spending half a year in a studio cell.
Anyway Pam,

only if you're a loser..... I know a few people who've done seasons and they've not spent much time on their own.
of course Nix doesn't clean his own oven. That's what the shally bitch is for. I don't know how many Swiss households James the Last knows, and I admit to only knowing 2. But they clean everything, all the time.
I do end of let cleaning in two apartments (got to pay for my skiing habit somehow). Small ones, which have always (I've been lucky) had decent and considerate guests. And yes, I certainly clean the oven every week because then it's quite a small job. Cleaning a small (2 bed) apartment properly, after considerate and decent guests, takes 2 hours minimum. Longer on the weeks where I decide to do all the windows and move the furniture to clean behind. Just doing the oven, fridge, hob, microwave and dishwasher, can take an hour, depending on how much cooking they've done. Arriving guests rightly expect to find things spotless. And that doesn't include changing beds or laundry; I charge extra if I do that.
No, I don't clean my own oven every week, but that's not the point! I'm happy with it less than spotless.

It's a job, but paid with "free" (sic) accommodation. Like any other job, you find out what's involved, and whether it would suit you. The lack of precision about the number of "person nights" in the chalet throughout the season is the thing that I'd want to pin down. That, and the standard to which you are expected to cook and clean. It could be a great job, it could be not a great job; we simply don't have the information needed to come to any sensible conclusion one way or another.

Neither do I, but that's because I wipe it thoroughly every time I've used it. It's similar for the fridge, hob, microwave and dishwasher, they are always clean (spillages cleaned up immediately, things in the fridge kept covered etc) and the only time-consuming job I have in relation to any of them is the occasional de-frost. I really do think that cleaning up after a rental to random strangers is a very different kettle of fish from the nixmap set-up and, unless the nixmap family (or indeed the hired help himself/herself) is extraordinarily slatternly, I doubt that the hired help will need to do frequent deep cleaning.
Btw, although I'm not Swiss, I am fairly obsessive about cleanliness/tidiness.
If it weren't for the anklebiter element, I'd seriously consider applying for the job. There would be all sorts of things that I'd want to 'pin down' first, but wouldn't dream of embarrassing either myself or nixmap by going into the fine detail on this forum.

wow a whole 2 hours a week. sounds like a real tough job espcially between 2 people?
Except In this case youve got 5 days to do it.
Just imagine you estimated wrong and it took twice as long - youd be almost rushed off your feet!

I read this in more than one thread about sesaonare. I'm mystified.
Maybe it's just me. I don't get a job to socialize. I mostly socialize outside of work, and with non-colleagues. So I can't quite figure out this talk about having to have a job in order to "meet people"...
Granted, if you don't know the local language, that could be a much more difficult task. But then, how would you find any sort of job without knowing the local language? I mean, not to be taken advantage of in the job (I mean being underpaid) due to lack of language?

Secretly I think pam wants the postion, but is now too embarrased to apply.
Actually pam it might be ideal for you. You could rent out your chalet for the season, come help at our place (seems you do this any way) and ski all season.
By my reckoning youd be several thousand better off. and get to ski somwhere different.
Make any sense?

I have two sisters-in-law whose houses are always immaculate, top to bottom. I find it quite astonishing; it's as though invisible elves were constantly wiping every surface. I'd love my house to be like that (providing I didn't have to do it myself) but it isn't.
The place in France is much easier to cope with because so it's much smaller though it still takes a full day, when we've been there for some weeks, to get it in decent shape to leave, with everything clean simultaneously - never the case here at home. The places where I do end of let cleaning are empty (so much easier to clean) and only ever have a week's worth of mess. Plus, all the people I've cleaned after have been considerate and decent guests, and left things in good shape.
nixmap, do you find your kids always keen to go to your chalet for the weekend? How many years have you had the place? Our neighbours, who live in Geneva and come out every weekend, have three girls and the oldest is becoming notably less enthusiastic, having friends, parties, activities etc of her own in Geneva. But she's 13/14 now - yours are younger I think?

Depends on the weather a lot, I guess. Actually we are not there every weekend, as we have friends with chalets in other places, Tchiertchen and Gstaad. Frankly if its raining there are better places to be, but I didnt want to attract a million more questions about workload. Its incredibly difficult to be exact about this.

1556garyt, Nice website. I like the plan of apartment with photo points! One word though, the balcony shot should be winter as I think it would do it more justice.
Dont get us started on amount of km of slopes. As we will go down the old road of a good skier not needing milage!!!!! Enough kms to perfect style

nixmap, 70sqm would be a vast apartment in France. But I think those that go to France care more for the skiing than the sleeping arrangements! As I said the Mrs learnt to ski on a tiny hill and perfected here turns there. You dont need to be in a huge area to be a good skier. I like a huge area because I am an average skier! Like so many of us

Boredsurfing, I would love to be a mate of the REW & enjoy being waited on hand and foot by his unpaid flunkies - I assume pedicures are one of the various tasks required. Unfortunately this is not the case but there isn't a lot of real skiing to talk about & frankly this thread is marginally more interesting than the help me plan a budget hol in the Eastern Urals summer type threads.
