Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Has skiing become too easy? Can it 'ignite the flames of passion'?

Well I still find plenty of challenges off piste - difficult snow and steep gulleys - although injury rates have gone down I'm still risking my joints and sometimes my life on the bet I can keep control.
There is a place for groomed pistes but I think far too many pistes are groomed. Certainly I don't think the buldozer should be used to reshape the mountain - that is the thing which makes slopes all the same and characterless. In Europe the lower slopes are (or were) mostly natural meadows - but I gather most American ski glades are man made by cutting down trees - they wouldn't have much skiing below the tree line if they didn't.
I can't see what's wrong with making skiing more accessible with better equipment. It was OK for a few with the time and money to master the old skis but most never experienced the pleasures which access to most of the mountain allows in a relatively short time. If you want challenge go off piste. But if we really want challenge above all why is there such joy amoung experts when the fresh powder covers up the breakable crust?
