Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I've never had to pay excess baggage charges when I've checked in my boots.

Julieanne, a puzzle really, and one I am fortunate not to need,as I do not usually fly in to or out of BAA airports.

BUMP
Just to re-confirm Grenoble Airport will NOT allow boots or Helmets in cabin bags. There are large signs to this effect as you enter Security and on the check in desks.

Well considering that the helmets used in skiing are constructed of lightweight plastic I can see no security issues at all apart from the fact that a potential terrorist may avoid being knocked out by a heavy object. I would recommend everyone to pack a helmet in their hand baggage and then proceed to block the queue with a protracted and laborious repack at the check in desk. After a whole winter of this the idiots at Geneva who have made this decision may well reconsider.
Action is required.

I agree! What about wearing our helmets at check in? Would this be acceptable? Slightly less cumbersome than wearing skiboots, as SMALLZOOKEEPER has suggested.

Julieanne, Great idea... claim you have recently fallen and banged your head and require protection.

Just to confirm the boots in hand-baggage is NOT a problem (from my experience this year) at Geneva, Lyon, Innsbruck, Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, on Easyjet, BA, Swiss, GB Airways and First Choice (? IIRC), and I've previously taken them through Luton, Stansted and Turin too (last season). Last year I also wore them through Gatwick, Heathrow, Geneva and Innsbruck with no problem.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

It sounds to me as a way to get you to pay more by increasing the weight of your check in bag. If your check in baggage weighs past a certain ammount they can bill you more.

I have traveled with my mountain bike a number of times, and what I really hate is that in some airports (such as Zürich) they ask you to "pack" the bike. In fact some dude gives you a helping hand and wraps your bike with some plastic. The price is 25 euros. Come on! I've got no money to burn! I'm a poor mountain biker. Oh yes, I could have done it by myself before leaving to the airport..

You know it makes sense.

Re earlier comments regarding getting to the car park quickly to speed the process. I got stopped by customs at Luton once, just because I had no baggage and made to wait for the rest of the party and my bags!
