Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Frosty the Snowman, I would STRONGLY suggest purchasing in the traditional rubber and 'wood' format. This modern stuff just isn't up to the job in/ on hand.

I am surprised no one has mentioned yet the need to have a "quiver" - or more correctly - a "handful" of gloves to deal with different snow conditions. Just because instructors' hands are protected by a force-field, and real skiers use riggers gloves doesn't mean that the keen amateur skier shouldn't have a large collection of gloves. Photos anyone?

Nick L, while I understand Elizabeth B's argument, I still would prefer the possibility to enjoy the use of dominant hand freely and uninhibitedly. I do agree with you that we need a poll - possibly also a survey on facebook - to determine this issue which obviously is as Gilberts Fridge mentioned, of importance. I am eagerly waiting for demontration videos of different techniques and analysis of the finger-wrist-arm angles' impact on the speed and control of putting the glove on.

demos, that is a very good question, but the answer is not simple. It all depends on the individual. No two people have exactly the same set up. For example, where is the arm amputated from? Is there a prosthetic? (Indeed that opens up a whole new threads worth about do prosthetics need gloves). Also, some amputees have amazing control with their feet. Some would then choose to put the glove on before the socks/boots.

I really think that you need to come to my glove fitting clinic. Advice over the internet just doesn't do itself justice.

stoatsbrother, yes, but one shouldn't forget restrictions on cabin baggage in this context. British Airways once refused point-blank to let me take my Oakley Irridium Silver Jacket Swansdown gloves in my cabin baggage - something to do with the allegedly dangerous nature of something used in the manufacture of these beauts, I didn't really understand the problem - and that was unfortunately on the same occasion that my main luggage went astray. I didn't, as a matter of principle, wish to replace them instantly (and, to be honest, I had already taken out a third mortgage on my house, to pay for a week at the Suvretta Palace) but that did mean that I was forced to ski the slopes of St Moritz for a day, wearing a pair of Lands End mitts belonging to a friend. It took some time to live down the shame.

The moral is: check very carefully with your carrier exactly how many pairs of gloves you are allowed to take and whether all or any will be allowed as cabin baggage.

Has anyone been charged for carrying gloves on a flight? Come on, name and shame the airlines.

I once put 2 pairs of gloves into my bag and only got charged for the carriage of one pair.....oh yeah, got one over the airlines big time that day.....

Not great technique, but watch the hand angulation of the 2nd glove. She's obviously had a lesson or two but hit the plateau.

Now this discussion has come on a long way but I have started to wonder if we are all being hampered by the hardware its self

Elizabeth B, Very illuminating. She was obviously having difficulty with the transition on the second glove. But I think it was the angulation on the first hand that was the problem. Or is that what you meant?

Hurtle, the angulation on the first one was a disaster. It was the 2nd one that led me to belive that she may have at one point had some instruction but fallen into bad habits.

boredsurfin, glove technology has come on leaps and bounds in the last few years. Why not ditch your old set and rent or buy a newer model?

I would draw attention to the Dita van Tease rubber glove video which was linked to the page Elizabeth B showed us. This video has several interesting features which might be applicable to skiing:

1. gloves are thick and long
2. putting them on happens lying down - as if one would have to put gloves on after a crash or fall
3. she is wearing a suit which while not perhaps the most aerodynamic given the supplementary holes in it, reminds me of the gear the fastest men and women on the piste wear.

Gilberts Fridge makes a good point on the new design for gloves. But before going to that issue, we should decide how much the gender-specific gloves vary and whether or not the technique varies from men to women, should it, or is it just sexist to think that gloves are not the same?

demos, point 2 brings up another very big issue. How do you put your gloves on in deep powder. What do you have to alter from "piste gloving"?

Elizabeth B, that is exactly what I would like your new instruction video and lecture to concentrate. I believe off-piste/powder gloving would have to do with the positioning the arms above shoulder level before attempting the gloving, movement ending with arms raised even above the head. The on-piste excercise should be more straightforward, dynamic and even slightly aggressive with short and rapid changes in pulling direction with a sufficient angulation between the hand and the wrist. Again, I may be mistaken, and would happily be corrected.

Timmaah, I think that congratulations are due to you for initiating one of the most instructive and entertaining threads I've ever seen. It shows that you are a very nice person, ready to cater for the needs of the less proficient amongst us. I hope you're aware how much you are appreciated. Mind you, it would be good to have some of your own technical tips as well. And I wasn't clear about the significance of the rolling-eyed smiley in your first post. Could you possibly clarify that a little?

Hurtle, I can only wholeheartedly agree with you. So far we have been discussing in a very civilised manner about something which have implications to all on the slopes. There is no reason why we should accept a small number of friends (are they?) to vandalise a perfectly valid topic and post gross pictures and create closed loop chattery. I would either ban them or lock this thread.
