I started it and got through about 10 tracks so far.
So far I've done:
Scooter - apache rocks the bottom
White stripes - 7 nation army
Grandmaster flash - white lines
UNKLE - reign
Beastie Boys - triple trouble
Vanilla Ice - Ice ice baby
Blur - Song 2
Lenny Kravitz - Are you gonna go my way
Jungle Brothers - I'll house you
Faithless - Insomnia
Diana Ross - Upside down
Loads more to do and re editing. I want to swap a lot of the rockier tracks out, I've used remixes but I want to put the originals in there. I added a few tracks of my choice just to mix it up a bit. Running time so far is 16 minutes Loads of tracks on top of tracks kind of thing.
I have the league unlimited tracks somewhere but can't find them, god knows what they are labelled as.

not that i listened to much music last year as i like to socialise with group and love the mountain scenery. I normally listen to my mp3 when im on the lifts. If i decide to listen to some music, especially if i go off alone i'll listen to Faithless greatest hits. God is a DJ, Insomnia and Mass Destruction are asolute classics.

Why would anyone want to dilute (polute?) the total experience of skiing and being in the mountains with anything else?
If the music is good then I want to concentrate on it - it needs my full attention to take it in (or anyway the music I like does). I HATE BACKGROUND MUSIC.

You know it makes sense.

I HATE BACKGROUND MUSIC.

It's not background music in the sense that, say, horrible LCD piped Christmas carols in a supermarket is background. If you have chosen it yourself, and are "moving to the music", it's foreground. If you go to watch a ballet (or dance yourself) the music is part of it, not background. The right music (different for everybody) can enhance, rather than dilute the experience. For me, playing Bach's "Jauchzet, frohlocket" whilst sashaying down a nice cruisy red piste at Christmas is not polluting anything, even if I am not giving my entire concentration to the magnificence of the harmonies. But nobody is forcing anyone else to listen. As for some of my other favourite ski music, e.g. Scissors Sisters, nobody needs to give that their full attention!

pam w, much of what you say is true - in a ballet you sacrifice some of your attention on the music for a unified experience of two things (incidentally this is particularly interesting if the two are not actually co-ordinated - as in Merce Cunningham's ballets). For this reason a ballet can get away with music which is very uninteresting on its own and still end up with a wonderful ballet.
However on a ski slope this just doesn't apply for me. I ski almost entirely off piste and want to experience the stillness of the enormous landscape and the swish of my skis and now and then a few words with my friends.
At home if we have guests over, I never put on music (unless it is to play them something - in which case we don't talk). Talking and music just interfere with each other.
Also for me the cinema uses music too much - but that's a matter of taste, I know.

Guess who comes across as the "pompous" one here?
And exactly where do you think he said anything whatsoever about being "anti-social". If you want to listen to music while skiing, fine (apart from the safety issues if it is so loud as to drown out extraneous sounds). But if somebody else doesn't want to, then why on earth should they not say so?

I don't disagree with anything said in this thread but I would like to point something out... If you are concentrating on skiing at your best then you will not hear the music. Maybe everyone here is different but I certainly know from biking / climbing and to a lesser extent skiing, that whenever I am fully involved and focused on what I am doing there is nothing else, there might be music playing in my ears but I definatly cannot hear it. Also the sound of my tyre's / ski edge / hand on a hold is super important, I can't understand why you would sacrifice that to listen to music that you can listen to anywhere.
If I do listen to music its gotta be;
Alexisonfire
At the drive in
RATM
AudioSlave
on the other end of the scale for something a bit more relaxed;
American Analogue Set
Cinematic Orchestra
Bonobo
The Boss

Mate, that's absolutely hilarious. Well done.
Where did I even suggest that people who listen to music when skiing are antisocial? I didn't.
On the otherhand caling me a pompous asshole because I prefer not to listen to music on my (far too infrequent) trips to the mountains IS pretty antisocial. Dont you think?
As far as skiing being sociable. Well of course it is - I rarely ski on my own. In fact it's a really important opportunity for me to catch up with some mates I don't see enough of.
I own about 1000 CDs and LPs (realise that this is a small collection by some people's standards), I have an ipod and a nano plus a chunk invested in good hifi. I love music too. Just don't mix it with my skiing.
In terms of that guff about K2 etc. Well I'll never climb in the Himalayas (although I hope to trek there some day) because a) I've never been a serious mountaineer b) would never want to climb them guided and c) I now have kids so going >8000m is a risk that doesn't stack up. I have climbed mountains in the Alps; rock in UK, France and Spain; trekked in Europe, Thailand, Tanzania, New Zealand and hope to more in the future. So yeah, I'll continue to find some time in the wild places - thanks.
Cheers,
J

Here's a little teaser of the mix I'm working on, been a bit slack on it lately, what with all the snow arriving and all that. Needs tweaking a bit in places but hopefully from this you get an idea if you'll like the whole mix or if I have ruined your songs.
23 minutes - 256kmpdrei 42Mb
Scooter - apache rocks the bottom intro
White stripes - 7 nation army
Grandmaster flash - white lines
UNKLE - reign
Beastie Boys - triple trouble
Vanilla Ice - Ice ice baby
Blur - Song 2
Lenny Kravitz - Are you gonna go my way
Faithless - Insomnia
Rammstein - Du Hast
Fannypack - Fanny pack theme
AC/DC - back in black
Gossip - Standing in the way of control
http://www.zshare.net/audio/4921634072a071/
Loads still to do, need to get a tempo change in there somewhere and start working on the slower songs, I seem to be going in a rock direction at the moment.
It's good to do this though, a bit of a challenge, I have limited control of the tracklist, some tracks I'm dumping in there myself to make it a bit easier, and to redeem myself for using Rammstein
