Megamum, Balance! Stand tall, breathe deep, expand your lungs, and find your balance.
If you look at skiers on edge, they look like they could lay down. But they don't because they have found balance.
The bosu can definitely help with that.

little tiger, I think I understand where they are coming from now.
I spent time with a race coach in May. He had me skiing faster and faster, even through what I thought was undesireable snow and terrain for the speed. But he had in fact unlocked some of the skills I needed to cope.
On normal piste, I now ski much faster (when I want to) but with more control and understanding of what I am doing. I try to use only the amount of effort/skill necessary to achieve the desired outcome. When I use too much or too little, I soon know about getting the balance wrong - especially at speed.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Incidentally, I ski quite quickly, very fast even, occasionally getting boot out. But I have to return to slower skiing, practicing drills; working on finer joint control and body management with a view to getting it right at higher speeds. Experimentation is a valuable part of the learning process as is guided discovery. (With a coach.)
I don't think anyone ever stops learning - even in snowsports. |
I was fortunate enough to ski with a recently retired WC racer in Italy last year...
He asked me how I skied and I answered as instructed by my ex - that I ski well but am very nervous but that I would prefer to tell them I ski so so...and that he should just ski me and look for himself
He did... and proceeded to tell me that he agreed that I was a good skier - but that now we should go to the easy slopes to learn to ski even better!
My ex is still wanting training... and he trained instructors all over the world for years!!

As I understand it; too much lead on the inner ski may mean you're slightly out of balance when looking at the balance over both skis as a whole. The skier may be balanced (fore/aft) on the outside ski, but slightly aft on the inner ski thereby putting more pressure through the tail. The inner ski is then prone to shearing. Apart from that you may already be out of fore/aft balance for good initiation of the next turn.
I understand Harald Harb advocates the drawing back of the inner ski to assist in getting the skier recentred and into the next turn. |
you could start a new thread and ask Fastman and some of the others to comment

Snowshark, no need to apologise... I just figured more chance of an answer if we had a new dedicated thread.... If you would care to start it?

OOOF! I didn't mean to run you off.
Good tech discussion is good tech discussion. But it seemed that you had an "ah ha!" moment and that is a good thing.
I must say. Separate threads for specific technique is a good thing, though, because it makes it easier to search for pointers later when you want to refresh what you may have learned through reading here.

SnowHot, Don't worry, I haven't been run off, nor has anyone upset me. The otehr thread has had some great responses and elicited afew more ah ha's. Will be looking at a few of them tomorrow.
comprex, I may be in Stowe this season, maybe not. Depends on issues beyond my control. Looking forward to meeting you, without any head slapping I hope.

Snowshark, sadly, after last year's tree well fun the old leg is not up to shape. I am posting on snow forums instead of savoring the peak of inline race season.

comprex, That totally bums me out!
I will surely miss you at Stowe, and hope you heal. Jeez I didn't realize you were still down with that. You'll be happy to know I've barely gotten on my rollerblades. Thanks for the help in regard to getting started on that!
