Can I ask why you think that? I'm interested as I'd like to know what you think makes a good rep. Personally, I've only met two (not skied with any) and although one seemed a lovely guy (he wasn't English, duuno whether that's relevant), the other put me off considerably. I attended the tour op's "welcome party" and the rep introduced the SCGB rep who gave us his speech. Out of our party of 26, none of us skied with him. He came across as arrogant and only interested in "gung ho" skiers. He made me feel too bad a skier, too unfit and altogether too "girlie" for his group. Other, fit, male, really good skiers in our group weren't interested either. They said he was a (how shall I put this?) banker.

maggi, what makes a good rep ? hmmm let me think......
Ok how about this for starters
A good rep must be willing to ski to the standard of those he is skiing with, that means that if he or she has said that the day will be a slow and easy cruise then he must go at that rate for the day unless everyone in the group wants to go faster, likewise no one who travels at a slow rate on a slow day should be singled out and made to feel a prat (I've seen it done) if the next day is supposed to be faster then the rep should approach anyone they feel is not going to be up to it and tactfully inform them that this is the case.
A good rep must take the time to learn the area before taking their charges arround, one rep that I know of relied on a quick chat with the previous rep to tell them everything about a resort just befor they took the group off on their tour, said rep was there for one or two days before hand but had gone to see friends in a nearby resort rather than finding out about the area
A good rep will take note of the weather conditions and adjust their plans accordingly, it's no good taking an easy group above the tree line in heavy fresh snow in a blizzard, doing so will only cause falls, I know I was there
A good rep will seek out those people with more resort time than themselves and ask if they have any suggestions or reccomendations
A good rep will actively encorage a good social time without forcing people into it
Lastly a good rep will not drink so much that they cannot walk back to their hotel without assistance, but if they should then they must ensure that they are bright eyed and bushy tailed for the next days repping, trying to give flu as a reason for non attendance when alcohol is to blame is not acceptable
Why would I not make a good rep ? .... I like to choose who I ski with

That's the thing about skiing with, or being, a rep, you'll meet lots of people, many you'll like, a few you won't.
Sometimes life is a box of chocolates without the little card to tell you what the centres are.
maggi,
Agreed.

Gerry, well that was one of my reasons, another is that my skiing standard goes up and down like a yoyo I would not inflict that on anybody

admin, Alan, thanks! Nice bit of moderating

You know it makes sense.

Brian T, your point was possibly serious, possibly tongue-in-cheek. As a fellow moderator (and very longstanding member of the SCGB) I'll just explain what seems to have emerged as the philosophy here, vis-a-vis the SGGB.
snowHeads happened because the majority (non-members) of the former SCGB 'community' were excluded. It would therefore be a bit odd for snowHeads members to call for exclusion of any individual or group of individuals, unless they really offended. The odd thing is that Gerry calls one of his Ski Club colleague reps (thankfully unnamed) a "banker".
We are, however, a tolerant and inclusive community - here to spread goodwill and understanding to fellow skiers!
The question raised by Kevin McClean for this thread is the important one: Why have 'you' (and one million fellow skiers) failed to join the SCGB?
The answer seems blindingly obvious to me. It's the same reason that a minority of people in this country shop at up-market boutiques and food shops, but the vast majority go to Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Marks and Spencer and go on holiday with Crystal, Inghams, Erna Low and other good-value suppliers. These companies provide value for money and relevant content.
The question for the Ski Club - in its new 'commercial' clothes - is whether it wants to be relevant and value for money, or slowly die as an ageing parochial organisation. I'll continue to plug away on this, because the Club has a distinguished heritage and valuable assets which its founders effectively 'dedicated' to British skiers. It's for the Ski Club to broaden its appeal, so that British skiers can join and share in those assets. I think that's its responsibility.
Please join the struggle!

For those who don't know what David and David are on about, 'DHO' stands for Downhill Only Club, which is based in Wengen, Switzerland, and has a certain timeless air about it. It's so named because the cog railway above Wengen enabled British skiers to be almost the first in the world to ski 'downhill only', back in the early 20th century.
The Club seems to be charmingly frozen in time. I was hoping to link to the DHO's website, but they don't seem to have entered the 21st century yet. Maybe DGO should introduce them to the internet!

Dan, sorry the DHO is the Down Hill Only club, based in Wengen Switzerland and so called because in the days when others had to walk up the mountain before skiing down, the club had the local trains to take them up the mountain meaning they could go downhill only

Dan, Actually you can ski uphill using skins attached to the bottom of the skis, just not quite as fast as going down

I don't see what's so odd about calling a spade a shovel, David. Any rep that goes to a welcome meeting and speaks in the way Maggie describes is acting contrary to everything they would have been taught during training. Hardly any wonder that some people there present formed the opinion that he worked in a bank!
I've encountered the same type. They make up a tiny minority of the reps. I once heard the same speech and formed the same opinion. Maybe it was the same guy.
As for him being '(thankfully unnamed)', clearly I wouldn't have commented if he had been.

Hi again, just returned from a week away. Gerry sorry for the remark. Yes it was churlish. Put it down to frustration at closure of the snow club open forum. However we must all move on. Sorry again
