veeeight, Re: pg.211, top pic of the 3 smaller ones. Is that Warren?
Top & bottom are Warren & the centre one is him taking a class. He's 2nd from the right.

Thought I recognised that distinctive form. He won't be pleased with those (slightly) diverging skis

ssh, A few pages ago you put a link to http://www.vailbcschools.com/SHORTCARVED.htm. OK, well I can do these but this isn't what I've meant as short turns in the past. i.e.how do you do it as un francais - you know those speedy quick turns they do on the edge of a piste to get past you?

Those were carved turns. They rely on the sidecut for the turn radius. To decrease the turn radius, you need to either increase the edge angle, introduce some steering, or both.

ssh, is there not a bit of steering there 2nd from last frame?

I think that there is. There really isn't enough of an edge angle to crank pure carved turns at the radius desired for "short turns". So, I don't know that I'd call them "pure carved," myself.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

1. He's doing swedish turns
2. (more likely) - it's a recovery move beause he's got outta shape frm the turn before, and just about to eat it....
Don't try to emulate that picture!

Just to throw a spanner in the works - tele turns are all about edging the inside ski (or little toe pressure). Is the Swedish turn the alpine equivalent?

Swedish Turns are part of an excercise set that seems to have been dreamt up by the ESC (as was) - it involves getting one ski up on it's tail, and the other ski up on it's tip, with lots of vertical movement. You then repeat this movement, only on the other legs.
It looks like a pair of scissors bouncing down the slope.

veeeight, no, but (not having seen the pic in question) was wondering whether it might have been some sort of skating or perhaps White Pass turn.

comprex, Think a pair of scissors, in the vertical plane, going down the slope.
You jump up vertically, one leg is doing a tail jump, one leg is doing a tip jump simultaneously. As you land, you turn 180 degrees and repeat, only switching legs and actions.
Yep.

veeeight, any edging at all?
The SO teaches skate dancing and does a non-edged version of this on speed skates too. Quite embarassing, really.

i had the wonderful opportunity to have been with bob and ott the day that footage was shot. we asked ott to do a little "old school" mambo and wedel. ott has the heart and body of a young man, however, i will say he has been teaching and skiing for very many years.
the day that was shot he was in the early stages of viral pneumonia. to add to his woes the day prior he had been in a collision with a snowboarder (not ott's fault) and had sustained a couple of injuries from that incident.
it didn't slow him down a step!
