@Thew2002, A very long time since I was a student so no idea about student night life in Innsbruck! Irish pub not far from the station if you want to watch football. However you do see plenty of folk on the trains in ski kit (ski boots a non issue). Also plenty of lockers etc at the station in St Anton. Personally I am not sure it is the sort of thing you are after, big difference spending a season in a ski village to a big city, even if it is in the middle of the mountains as Innsbruck is. As a second best either Landeck or Bludenz might be worth considering both are connected by regular buses to St Anton / Lech. Lots of people who work in the ski area live in the nearby towns and commute simply because of the difficulty finding & cost of local accommodation.

Ok seems I have accomodation in St Anton sorted again. Hopefully they don't suddenly say on the day I arrive they don't allow non-workers!
Now the next stress will be just getting the visa sorted! I have the meeting end of September so will feedback how that goes!

@Thew2002, I would suggest against the Innsbruck option. You're doing a ski season, you want to be in a ski resort, not travelling a long distance every day to ski.
In terms of the cost of a train ticket, there's the Klimaticket which allows unlimited travel on public transport in the whole of the Tirol. This is currently €561.80 for the year. You pay monthly, but can't cancel without paying the remainder of the ticket price. Really reasonable if you're here all year, less so if you're not. Alternatively there's the monthly ticket at €112.40 a month. Klimaticket breaks even at 5 months.
Have you tried facebook groups for accomodation as well?
https://www.facebook.com/groups/958164150861495/
That might work.

I am just curious what the latest open bar is in St Anton, from google maps it seems to be 1am (Bar Cuba) - Is this correct or is there somewhere people will go after this?

@Thew2002, The days of me sitting in bars until 3am are long gone! However I am sure a good few of the various bars are open until late. Personally I avoid Bar Cuba, scruffy and full of drunk brits (sorry if you love the place!). Near to Bar Cuba I believe both Murrmel & Bobos open late. Further up there is (or was?) the Piccadilly and also Postkeller both of which were open late. The number of drinking spots has declined in recent years, either replaced by yet more expensive sports kit shops or eating spots aimed at 50+ crowd who seem to be the main clientele these days. Some of the hotels have cellar bars eg Nassereinerhof which possibly open late too. Most of the contributors around here will be tucked up in bed long before midnight to enable an early skiing start the next day!

Great thanks! I've never been before so I don't know what I like yet don't worry, it just felt like 1am would be quite an early finish the occasions I want a late one.

Speak for yourself lightweight
latest opening these days is 3am, in days gone by the local nightclub was open all night and one could go straight to the bakery for coffee and a croissant... get changed and go skiing or to work. Unfortunately the powers that be thought this was a terrible idea and people in st anton need to be in bed a bit earlier, so instead there is now the 3am street party.
Murmel is open till 3, bobo's at the weekend, cuba 1ish depending, anthonies can also be 3 it depends how busy. Lifts open 8.45 or 8.30 depending on time of year.

Oh 3am is great! That's a completely reasonable hour, plus a flurry of people partying in the street at 3am can only be fun.

@hsdee, A good number here qualify for free bus passes, I managed - just by a couple of weeks, to get a discounted lift pass last season. I am afraid that doesnt go with 3am drinking and being on the first lift!. Perhaps that's why Gunar at the Murrmel is so popular. These days I prefer the Dorfstuben in St Anton (make sure you order Tegernsee not Steigl!) or zur Trauben / Freidls in Pettneu and being in bed by 11

In the Zillertal you get one by being a resident here. You just show your Meldezettel at the ticket office.

You're wrong:
Germans: definitely not
Dutch: majority still wants to stay in
French: unlikely
Italians: definitely not
Spanish: definitely not
Polish: back on track, happier to stay in

What is your basis for that? Most polls had the UK to stay in in advance, there is a silent majority who will vote out come the day though.
Also there will be Russians who didn't want to invade Ukraine, claiming they 'voted' for that is unfair

My friend has now realised how easy it is to fly to innsbruck and to get the train to st Anton and therefore is considering leaving his car in the UK. Our accomodation does give a free car parking space, but this may be completely unnecessary?
What are people's thoughts on bringing the car? I guess it could make it easier to travel around for fun, or would it just be sitting on the drive...

Public transport is really easy, free local buses, train station in centre of village, connections to lech also easy, lots of very expensive taxis. Car useful for skiing other areas should you wish to go exploring and a big supermartket shop. If you do take a car it would need snow tyres and check the antifreeze, also you'll need to clear the snow off from time to time if its parked outside and give it a run, else cover it and bring the battery inside. Insurance after 90 days overseas can be tricky with many insurers. Very blinkin useful start and end of season if you bring too much stuff and want to take it back.

There used to be upto 1500 Brits working in peak season in St Anton (alone) pre Brexit .. Now that number is around 50 .. most of who have settled permanent resident status..
These positions are now filled by EU Workers (Poles, Dutch,Danes, Irish, Slovaks, Hungarians) who can speak English fluently & Australians who have dual EU Passports plus many more.
So you can imagine how many Brits were working in Austria , France, Italy, Switzerland etc pre Brexit..
You take your choices right or wrongly .. you pay for it
________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Cars are completely discouraged in St Anton..
Public Car Parks/Parking is €7.00 per day (last season) No overnight parking is Permitted.
Parking fines are High
There is a Free Ski Bus service all the way down Valley .. to Pettneu, Flirsch .
Nightbus you have to pay (last season €3.50 around St Anton & €5.00 to Flirsch) runs every hour until around 03:00 -04:00
A Taxi just to St Jakob can cost €20 in main season and it is only a 5min ride which you can walk easily walk in 12-15minutes.. A Taxi to Flirsch can cost over €100 ..They are NOT metred and most are CASH only !!
________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Discounted Ski Pass..or ANY Refunds .. Zero Chance of that for Tourists.
If you work continuously for more than 3 months you will get upto 50% of your lift pass back when you do your Austrian Tax Return. Also you can claim travelling expenses and various other things like doctors appointments etc (with proof) .. Australian workers offset their flights which helps them a lot. You will need an Austrian Bank Account.
Also Note. All ATMs in town charge €5 to withdrawal cash (per transacton) if you do not have a Bank Account with the Bank dispensing the money.

It's a big shame that there won't be many Brits doing a season, but hopefully I can befriend some other nationalities, I mean I won't know unless I try.
I feel like France is making it easier for British workers, meribel and Val d'isere seem to employ quite a few Brits. I wonder if the st Anton late nights clubs closing is due to the reduced number of drunken Brits...
We have a free parking spot so it's just the question of whether we want to use it.
Thanks for the info about the ski pass, will have to pay full price. I just want this season to come around quickly now!
Do many bars/restaurants in town take card? I basically did the whole season in France without ever needing cash so hopefully can do the same.

You still see plenty of drunken Brits as well as Germans, Dutch, Swedish etc especially around Galzigbahn from 8:30 to 9 when the Moose kicks everyone out. Most of those won't be going clubbing though they already have their fill of alcohol by that time.
Almost everywhere accept cards except for a few places on the mountain. If you are just drinking in a bar (and not running a tab) sometimes it's better to pay in cash so you can leave a small tip with each round of drinks you buy. That way you are more likely to get quick service next time you need a beer in one of the crowded bars

@stanton, curious, where did you get the figure of 1500 brits working ? i would have estimated about 500 between the chalets, ski schools and local jobs which most stayed away from due to their lack of german.
@Thew2002, You will easily make some ski and bar buddies there, it's a good community of workers, locals and those who have stayed, another advantage of a car is sneaking off to sonnenkopf on a mid week powder day. Most places take card, some ask for a 20 euro minimum, always carry some cash.

There are fewer brits in Austria generally than in some of the French resorts though a few old fashioned la di da types are still in evidence (especially in Zürs). The largest groups are Germans (hardly a surprise) Dutch & Scandinavians (more in Arlberg than elsewhere). There were a surprising number of North American accents last year though I doubt many make it to the Moose or KK.
If you have a car parking space (dont bother otherwise) then a car might be useful for getting to Sonnenkopf (separate smaller area on Arlberg pass) and the Paznauntal areas. These are possible with public transport but slow and not really practical for day trips. Otherwise the buses & trains work very well.
Cards accepted pretty much everywhere, the usual procedure is to run a tab, settle up at the end and add a Euro or two to the bill. Worth keeping €20 in your pocket just in case.

@hsdee, seems high to me too but @stanton, has form for making stuff up so take with large pinch of salt. Maybe someone has the numbers for how many brits were stuck in the village when the covid panic broke out and were subsequently shipped back to UK which would give a good idea.

most of which have dual (Irish EU) passports..
The figure i quoted of 1500 was peak and was in the period 2010-2015.. Brits did not jus work in Chalets, Operators, ski schools.. They filled many vacancies. Many worked in the Kitchens & Hotels. Two actually worked as Head Chefs for more than 10 seasons in two Highend Hotel & Restaurant..
Do you know how many Kitchens there are just on Dorfstraße (pedestrian zone)??? then multiply by the whole town ,St Christoph & down the Valley !!!

Austria Inflation
Austria's hyperinflation has been contained, it is now closer to the eurozone average in the past months, however business sentiment in the country remains "extremely pessimistic," the Austrian Institute of Economic Research (WIFO) said on Thursday.
High inflation, driven by "buoyant demand for leisure and tourism services, fiscal policy measures and strong wage increases," has pushed Austria's inflation rate to one of the highest among eurozone countries over the past few years.
According to the WIFO report, Austria's inflation rate has edged down closer to the eurozone average.
Statistics Austria also said in a flash estimate at the end of July that Austria's inflation rate for July is expected to stand at 2.9 percent, marking the first time in three years that the monthly figure has dropped below 3 percent.
