@Alpinebear, where is the Freezing Level? Looked like snow from about 2000m upwards but i suspect that has been raising for a while…

Does anyone know if the direct Wednesday bus link from Alpe d'Huez to Les Deux Alps is still running? You used to buy it direct from the Palais Des Sports but the office is now only open on Wednesday mornings! Is it worth turning up on the day?
Pretty ropey conditions here this week, not too bad higher up but very slushy low down with ice inbetween. The Sarenne was heaving yesterday. Some rain in town last night with a tiny dusting of snow higher up but more snow and colder temperatures desperately needed (although I gather ADH is faring better than most French resorts)

Above 2000m is relatively well covered, but hard packed in places. Some lower areas are OK, Montfrais is nice for example but there is no skiing to the Vaujany valley. Jeux was spring like at 1pm today, and quiet. The conditions below 2000m are driving skiers to the higher areas which is causing some queuing, and tbh some dodgy skiing on the higher, steeper slopes. I’ve seen worse conditions, but the forecast snow is definitely needed. On the plus side, lunchtime dining is taking place in glorious sunshine!

Bucketing it down in Vaujany today. On piste lovely, all those firm surfaces nicely covered with fresh snow. And quiet too. Be interesting to see if there is enough to open the valley runs, Vaujaniate looks good for it, La Fare might need a few more days. Though temps are supposed to rise if we are spared the worst of the rain it should be ok.

A fabulous day, blue skies, fabulous conditions on piste though cold and windy on the exposed summits. Joyful!

More fabulous on piste skiing here yesterday, lots of snow forecast from Sunday onwards. Still best above 1600m but ‘‘twas ever thus.

Have a great trip. We skied to the valley floor today, the schuss at the end was tacky and in places muddy (urgh) but the 1,550m descent was until that point in great nick.

I'm heading to the other side of the mountain (Les Sybelles) midweek for some alternative snowy fun before heading to ADH in March for a little ski, so will continue to follow all the updates here for most the season

I expect that today was frustrating for you, top lifts closed and liaisons between the villages too. It was one of those days where chair lifts were a kind of torture, bloody cold. And in Vaujany the long runs that let you warm up your muscles weren’t open. The snow hasn’t stopped for long all day, tomorrow looks the same. This weekend should be great, lots of coverage, lots of sunshine.

@Petere, we had to stay below 2000m and mostly skied the lower runs. Nice runs over the top of Signal but the wind at times was sending piles of ski gear down the mountain. Cut the day short around 2pm. Tomorrow looks similar but last day! Those coming this weekend are in for a treat!

Had a lovely day yesterday, even saw some blue skies. Visibility was so much better and piste conditions were generally awesome. Made it over to Oz and the runs down into the valley were excellent too. Home time now. Any one coming in the next week or so, wrap up warm and enjoy the sunshine and amazing skiing (saw all the piste bashers out for the first time last night too).

Amazing bluebird morning in Alpe D’huez, typical as we leave in about an hour.
On our first day skied down from the red arrow in zero vis and 60-70kph winds! Scary stuff, but quite an achievement!

Apparently yesterday on the Pic Blanc summit it was -42 with the wind chill

Bloody hell - I did a -24 one day in Valmorel - that was cold, with moisture on mouth and nose freezing and then covering it.
-42 is severe - hope no-one suffered issues if they were up there

V cold again today, and very busy, half term like crowds. I am guessing that the relative lack of snow in the Vercors Chartreuse and Belledonne stations made Alpe d’Huez more attractive.

Hmm, that makes it busy Saturdays does it? I figured they ran the promotion because Saturdays were quiet and was thinking of going on a Saturday. Didn't imagine they would give deals on days they were going to be busy anyways. Good to know!

@TOLOCOMAN, I think Alpe d'Huez is busy on Saturdays *because" of the deal. Plus thiss was the first Saturday with good snow for a while, so pent-up demand.
|
|
|

Just to add to the puzzle, I don’t think there was a deal today but it was heaving.

The weekend price is 93 euros so makes it quite attractive for people to come up.

Busy weekend ahead but conditions cold and sunny today.
The strike on Tuesday at the moment for us will only be from 08h30 to 09h30 so limited disruption.
