@Whitegold, The natural snow has started lying at Glencoe, its also forecast to snow this weekend.
Winter has only just started and a lot will change between now and the new year.
IIRC, Tignes villages were snow free 2 weeks ago..............

@Whitegold, FFS. Relentless. I've lived and skied in Scotland for 10 years. Christmas skiing is a rare treat, not a yardstick to judge the season.

Some interesting stats for the Scotland ski season in 2017 / 2018.
Total skier days = 247k in 2017 / 2018.
Ten-year average market share...
* Cairngorm = 35%.
* Glenshee = 31%.
* The Lecht = 13%.
* Glencoe = 11%.
* Nevis Range = 10%.
Interesting to note Cairngorm's market share collapsed from 41% in 2014 (when Natural Retreats took over) to 24% in 2018...

As predicted, Xmas-NY has been bad for Scotland.
No snow anywhere. Very high temps.
No major snow in forecast.

Well done @Whitegold you're amazing! I don't know how you do it! You should be a weather forecaster.

As expected, usual for Xmas in Scotland.

1. This is the UK with its highly unpredictable (unless you're Whitegold of course) maritime climate.
2. Some good snow depths and cover have built in important gullies (as we found when ski touring up at Cairngorm six days ago - about 400m vertical available in the Ciste).
3. There could still be skiing until May - keep the faith!

Everywhere remains green.
No major snow possibly until at least February.
Cairngorm in chaos.
This could end up as Scotland's worst season this century.

@Whitegold, I am currently in 28c sunshine in NZ - will be out in Tignes in 3 weeks then back in Scotland, so if your prediction of snow in Feb comes true then that suits me

Not that it really matters. There's no snow for the rain to melt or saturate, so we're starting from scratch anyway

Sounds of drumming fingers across Scotland and northern England...
There's a dusting up Glencoe at the moment and some more looking likely at weekend, but nothing to get excited about ... yet.

Thanks for the info.
Mrs_kiteman and I were hoping to trial our new motorhome up in Glencoe next week (getting ready for something on the continent next year)
But we have just cancelled the booking and going to go and look at some distilleries instead

Snow coming midweek, 30-50cm.
Should be enough to open a few trails.

Given the forecast, if there were enough man-power and ££ I can imagine some of the hills could be 50% open by Saturday if they fired up every snow gun 24/7. But I'm guessing this isn't possible? I'm no expert of course
|
|
|
|
|
|
@Canuck, "every snow gun"? Apart from Cairngorm, none of the resorts have more than a few snow guns. I think most of the areas would be lucky if they managed to get more than a couple of runs open for Saturday - unless there is significant new natural snow, which seems unlikely. Would be happy to be proved wrong though!
The Lecht currently looks the most hopeful.
|
|
|
|
|
|
@Canuck, I think you are confusing Scotland with multi million pound alpine resorts with snow cannon lined runs!! Maybe the Lecht could catch some showers to open up one run, and if the ground freezes Glencoe and the 'Gorm may be able to produce and push enough snow around from their factory to open one run each!

Hence 'enough man-power and ££'. Excuse my ignorance, but why does there previously seem to be so much investment (debatable, but that's another thread!) in Cairngorm's infrastructure rather than a few guns at each hill?

Maybe I've opened a can of worms!

@Canuck, haha, yes, the reason Cairngorm has received so much investment compared to the other centres is a long story... and one that someone else will be along to answer shortly, I'm sure!

Press and Journal are reporting West Wall poma and the Ciste T-bar are the ones out of action, as much as I love that place and practically grew up there i wouldnt go at the moment unless there was a 12 foot dump of champagne pow imminent. Sad times...

@JoyZipper, They are fitting the t bars to the Ciste tow so it will have been fixed, for the West Wall Poma they can't work on that unless there is snow to get the machines down, they have been making a lot of snow at the bottom for a beginner area meaning returning to the car park will be better than normal.

Five of the 6 Scotland stations now open.
Around 10-40% of all lifts are running.
Cover very thin, for the time of year.

May be some okayish riding in Glencoe and perhaps Nevis on Wed or Thurs.

- Nevis opening top to bottom tomorrow. Thin in places - but great news.
- Lecht with a fair few runs open too.

Following the Facebook pages for Glencoe and Nevis, which look most hopeful at the moment.
Any thoughts from the more locals as to when it's worth seriously getting the starting blocks out? (Or is Nevis now a go-er, weather permitting?)
