You can ski from top of gondola all the way down to below Sestriere on a blue long and winding we did it several times last week We had about 10 cm fresh snow if not more .

I've made it to the mid-station of the bubble, skied down further one time, and ended up in the middle of some condo's and god knows what else - then a bus to take us back to a ski lift - then to the Sestriere bubble - it doesn't seem to be marked... it was all kind of weird...

It is for sure not true. They got some yesterday, and they are in for a retour d'est this week. Follow James on Sauze Online - facebook. He has a weekly video report. We can keep in touch, and let me know when you come over to Sauze - we can have lunch at Orso Bianco - yummiest food.
Will let you know when I reach there.
How long you are gonna be there ?
@FireballXL5, @HeidiAmsterdam, Loads of people get lost on that blue!
Could do with giant signs pointing to Sestriere!
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@the saint If your licence will allow it you can hire a min bus really cheaply at Turin airport. it priced out at EUR 270 for four days and gives you flexibility.

I know this is the weather thread but we are heading out to Monty in 13 days! Can't wait!
Can anyone recommend a decent restaurant for an evening meal? We are in a catered chalet but have the usual non-catered night.
Any good bars to keep an eye out for?

Can anyone more familiar with Via Lattea than me (many people on here I'm sure) tell me if it's worth going to montgenevre from sestriere? Is the skiing good enough to spend a day on for an intermediate skier? And it isn't really clear to me if there are runs going down to Cesena from either side - can someone explain how this works?
All suggestions will be appreciated

Skribble (and others), thanks for the response. We've opted for private transfer through James at sauze online so hopefully all goes smoothly. There were no volunteers for driving...myself included. All due to enjoying a beer or two rather than any concerns regarding driving in Italy ☺

No, it's a lot of time on lifts, if you want to ski in Montgenevre book a holiday there. If your in sestriere use your time skiing.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Our half term is a week earlier this year. A regular UK group (grrrr) has the same week, and booked out the whole place. Would really like to crash the party... but Dawn knows my bad manners. Going to La Cappanina instead. But, booked myself in for 2018 already.

Is there accomodation at Capanna Kind? Any good?
What's it like staying in Sportinia... I've always stayed down in resort.
hang on... you mean La Cappanina? (the yellow place) - Question still stands though! Must be nice once or twice, but you must miss the town a little?

@sn0wman, @Fast Pat, has a point... It's a lot of dragging yourself up and down lifts... But getting to San Sicario isn't too bad. Great selection of reds there. If you really want to hit Sestriere you might want to consider a day trip (bus service with tour operator?) to maximise your time there.

Yes spelling error - will correct.
Don't miss town at all! Love starting mid mountain, sipping my coffee while my girls take a couple of laps.... a lot of repeat guests there, so usually with friends. Food is great too, but if you've eaten there for lunch, no need to explain further...

@HeidiAmsterdam, I suppose I invariably end up meeting up with my brother (which involves many pints) so having the town is quite handy. My wee lad is 18 months old now and I'm seriously considering options for when I do decide to take him skiing and I suppose Sportinia would be good fun. Do you "cat" it up or use the lift and someone else sorts the luggage?

Great option if you have wee ones... as ski school is right there, and little one can rest, while someone is still skiing...lol... but there is beer in Sportina too!
If you arrive during normal hours, you take the lift up to Sportina, the lifties know how to deal with the luggage - and that is free. If you arrive after hours, it is a CAT or snow scooter transfer which costs 25 or so per person... and it can be very cold! Or a lot of fun, depending on your disposition.
But ask @Smokin' Joe - he's stayed in Sportina as well..

@letsgetpiste, sadly yes - have gotten lucky past 3 season with first season's trip falling JUST after a dump but so such luck this time. But yeah as you say, sounds like still some great conditions on piste. And a new area to explore!
You know it makes sense.

How are we looking out there?
Flying out Sunday and can't wait. Has the temperature warmed up a tad from the -17 of last week?

Fantastic piste conditions - spent yesterday in Sauze and today in Sandicario which was even better, smooth pistes holding up phenomenally well. @Fridge03, defo warmed up from -17, around -8 at the top and a few degrees less around sportinia with sun factor making lunch time really rather pleasant (without affecting the snow).
Off piste is heavily tracked crust and not particularly pleasant... but still some untracked inches to be found if you know where to look. but pistes keeping up skiing experience nicely and extremely empty particularly before lunch. Makes for some dream edge to the edge carving practice

@abbosphere, I cannot wait to get back over! Just 3 more days at work, then on the plane!!
Cheers for the updates... keep em coming! The locals saying anything about the forecast?? Next week could be a bit snowy!
Over in Sauze from Saturday for the week. Any Snowheads fancy meeting up?

This one's more of a family trip but I may well be talked into pints! I believe McGintys is gone, but Miravellinos has taken up the mantle. On the mountain, I tend to fill my glass at Capanna Kind in Sportinia.
As the name might suggest, I am predominantly a piste skiier and this year I'm hoping to get some mileage and cover a few resorts. However, if the weather does close in as the forecast is beginning to suggest, I'll stay closer to the tree lined runs of Sauze.
We are driving down Saturday. We are 3 piste skiers and will be skiing Sauze, Sestriere and then driving over to Serre and Bardoneccia weather permitting. Always up for a pint or 3 😁.

@abbosphere,
Sounds perfect. Still learning, so will be all on piste for me so glad to hear they are in good shape. And that it's warmed up slightly!
Hoping for some fresh snow whilst we are there but won't be too upset if it's blue sky every day!
