Some people can not ski properly/safely - would alcohol help in these situations? You have to be realy stupid to suggest that. Ski lesson and a good instructor is the answer, not alcohol.
Is alcohol a bad thing as such - no, you can enjoy a drink in the evening. I do it, most people do it. But I feel very strongly about dangerious and drunk people on the slopes, as I have kids and one of the 'brave' ones nearly smashed into my daughter after falling on an easy red run and slid over all the way down. This drunk was 'enjoying' a beer or two earlier in the resto, when I was waiting my children to return from the toilets. Interestingly, the group of drunk people did not see a problem at all. I had to 'explain' in a 'language' their understood better being in that conditions. My kids were arround, but next time I would not even hesitate throughing skis from the mountain of these kind of assholes.

@biddpypat Thanks!
My job at home is pretty intense sometimes. If the network or servers are down, I don't stop working until everything is working - I've gone for three days of sitting in a data centre working with just food stops. It doesn't matter what time I get home from a night out, I'll be up early for lifts.
One of my friends fell sleep on a chairlift during his class and only woke up when he pulled the safety cord at the top. I've fallen asleep on the side of runs before and even on a tbar.
@mooney058 That is very disrespectful of those idiots. It is one thing to have fun with a few beers and another thing to put other people at risk and not nice to do anything like that in front of the kids.

Me an a couple of lads go away skiing every year and every night we will have a good meal followed by a skin full of ale... The morning is always the toughest part of the day up at 7am force some continental cheese bread an a boiled egg down with a coffee and We're off!!! Top of the gondola ready to tackle the mountain and 50 yards later my ski legs are still in bed and we're all feeling awful!!! After our first wobbly run we stop and out comes the hip flask full of Jager/Brandy very large swig from that followed by another swig and then you know what all of a sudden I can feel the confidence back and the hangover disappear... Couple of beers at lunch with a pizza and the afternoon is fine too... finishing the flask too throughout the afternoon... back home and start the cycle again!!!
I know there will be a few on here who think that sounds like hell but it's what we like and as yet no injuries to us or anyone else... Haven't skied sober yet but will definitely try it one day

@mooney058, yes I agree those guys sound like right idiots and definitely deserved an ear bashing. I guess, in context of the thread, the question is were they a) idiots because they were drunk , b) just idiots who coincidentally happen to have been drinking, c) idiots because they'd drunk a moderate amount of alcohol. I suspect they were probably a) or b), and those kind of people aren't welcome by anyone on the slopes.
So taking a moderate amount of alcohol as one pint or one glass of wine, does that improve your performance? Personally I think no, that's a tough one to argue. But does it significantly impair your performance, personally I think not (no more than a whole host of other factors anyway, such as being tired, coldy etc).

@ryan110398,
I've had a few drinks at Apres Ski bars and skied down at a time when the majority of skiers on the piste weren't completely sober either. I wouldn't ski tanked up during the day when there are small children, learners, old people etc on the piste. Do you really think it's fair to put other sober people/children at risk just because you want a drink during the day?

For me it works like this-
1 lunchtime beer. Ski the afternoon as normal
2lunchtime beers. Cruise around reds and blues with the cruisy red/blue skiers in our group.
3 lunchtime beers. The afternoon skiing is lost, might as well drink. Carefully ski down the mountain the easiest way possible to a suitable bar.
1 beer happens almost every day. 2 beers maybe twice a week. 3 beers hardly ever any more.

@dode, Taking the term sober literally would mean having no measurable amount of alcohol in your system surely? Being drunk would be not in control of your actions or even drinking to excess!!! So as before no I have never skied drunk but I will have a few beers...

Define 'play hard' for me pls. few shots of brandy, few beers over lunch and few more later? I 'played' hard as well - last time it was falling and getting up again off-piste, trying to improve my off-piste technique - it was indeed a hard play ... then in the evening I relaxed.

@mooney058, does it really matter what he means? if he says he puts a lot into what he does in work and play, does he need a cross examination in order for the rest of us to judge if it is true? some people can indeed drink two beers and not be drunk, some cannot, he probably can. I was on a ski trip to livigno once and my husband noticed our driver had a half carafe of wine with his meal half way up the mountain, but he obviously had a high tolerance for it, not sure what the drink driving rules were in Italy back in the late eighties but he didn't bat an eyelid. My husband got a severe dose of religion though.

In fairness though I think those that are skiing so drunk they are so dangerous are less common than those who think they are great skiiers ( even sober ) and ski faster than their ability, and can't turn or don't obey the mountain rules. I was taken out by a punk last year who was skiing the fall line and couldn't stop so he just crashed into me to stop his fall...... I was skiing slowly as I was keeping an eye on my kids in front of me and they had done a long hard run that ended on a nice red which of course was over crowded by too many of the type of idiot that took me out.

If you stopped at the same way stop as when I went to Livigno from Milan they put out carafes of rough red wine & served spaghetti automatically as they was the only thing on the menu and very nice it was too. I suspect the wine was more acidic that alcoholic. You would need all your facilities to negotiate the winding mountain road to Livigno.

I am not sure there is a specified limit.
Your insurance is invalid if your under the influence of drink or drugs. Many will still have a fair alcohol content in their blood the morning after.

I'm not cross examining, I was trully interested in knowing what he meant by 'play hard' - in my situation it is ski hard and make use of all opportunities you face on the slopes, enjoy the environment. If 'play hard' is = (a) couple of shots of brandy/JagerM in the morning, + (b) followed by 2-4 pints on the slopes and +(c) many more in the evening - I am genuinly surprised why do you need to come to ski resorts - Ibisa might be a better place and chances of injuring somebody on the slopes are non-existent.

@mooney058, Ok I see where your coming from basically your asking if we ski or just drink... As I mentioned in my original comment we like to have a few beers of a night how many that is depends on the evening I don't count beers, wine or whatever but we have a good night every night!!! Watch a band, go round a few bars and socialise it depends on the resort... I get that some people probably like yourself don't drink on a ski holiday and that's fine everyone to their own... We do get up early though every morning and we are straight out skiing all day and we love it... If I am honest the last week we had skiing in feb this year I didn't fall over once all week now im not sure if that's the drink making me a better skier or if im just not going fast enough

I reckon there is a sweet spot, no more than one beer, not because of the alcohol content but because two is too much liquid sloshing around inside, after that you have to move onto the genepy, jager or bombadinos
