As an antidote to the mild abuse I'm getting on another thread for the sin of carrying a hip flask I thought I'd revive this thread to see if anyone has any good, new creations. In addition to my usual stalwarts of sloe gin, orange whisky, Christmas pudding vodka, I have recently brewed up some Raspberry gin (outstanding!!) and some Beetroot and Horseradish Vodka (somehwat unexpected, but surprisingly good).
Anyone else have anything new? |
Genepi - if it's cold. Armagnac or Calvados if it's warmer.

I think there should be a new addition to code of conduct
"It is absolutely forbidden to enjoy yourself, if You are observed doing so then you will have your lift pass removed and be escorted of the mountain with immediate effect"

Brandy, it goes very well in hot chocholate.( hate it on it's own). When we went hunting we always had a mixture of black rum, brandy, and whiskey. ( it's cold and wet here,so it was central heating)

Yeah, but they're a b*gger to use discreetly in a restaurant or coffee shop... plus they won't fit in the dishwasher.

Home made sloe or damson gin, or occasionally the local schnaps. @Timg60, Thank you for reminding me to get my hip flask out and filled ready for next Saturday's annual trip to Arabba.

Well, i'm sorry to learn of the abuse. Very un-snowheads. The Puritan Police again?
Mine used to contain home-made Toffee Vodka (best Russian Vodka and packet of Werthers Originals), but now contains Rusty Nail: Glenfiddich and Clayva. Much easier to concoct.

While I agree with the camelbak for binge purposes, sloe gin doesn't really make the most of it. You need some 40% proof and above really.
My hip flask is mostly empty, on the times it has stuff in it it's usually cheap. Think spiced rum, sambuca or Buckfast cheap (although I do feel that Buckfast comes in for some undue negative press, it's a taste sensation). On serious occasions it may have a single malt, but not anything too nice as it's just not the same. Sadly none of this can be consumed while skiing, because I ski like a cretin at the best of times and after a drink it's just downright reckless.

@Jonpim,
I had a West Indian fried who used to have a rusty nail with every lager that he ordered. By the end of the evening he was drinking both from pint glasses. It's a good job his dog knew the way home

@SnoodyMcFlude,
Is Buckfast cheap in Scotland? I seem to remember it's expensive at the Abbey. Perhaps that's just a tourist thing.

It's fantastic, but also dangerously strong. It's a favourite 'festival drink' of mine, a tasty drink that's not too heavy to carry. Other good flavours are rhubarb & custard and strawberry skittles.
For a twist on Blackjacks you can mix sambuca and coke, but that's more of a long drink than something for a hip flask.

@musher, Yep, for me Bucky is just a local delicacy. There's a service station in Ashburton that sells it, about £6 or £7 a bottle I think from memory.

@kiteman69, bleah: what a mess to clean out...
Cheap Whisky for me, to flavour the Hot chocs. (or straight - it just isn't the same out of metal canister is it, so no point wasting the expensive) with a bottle of the good stuff - GlenGoyne or Lagavoulin - back in the apartment.

My hip flask was also empty Cacciatore for the recent Alleghe trip, unfortunately a house party a week before the trip demolished my intended tipple of Goldschlager (cinnamon schnapps).
I did pick up a nice Myrtille (bilberry) grappa from Alleghe that will be in the hip flask for next weeks Austria trip.
