Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

What do you do on a chairlift?

Singing songs loudly is a good way of dealing with long chair rides in blizzards.
Nonimations so far for the Chairlift Hit Parade include:
Mercedes Benz song (Richie_S)
Always look on the bright side of life (saxabar)
And my nonimation: "I know a song that will get on your nerves" - my son Tom's favourite, and number 89 on this list.

"Oh what a beautiful morning" from Oaklahoma. Top of the lungs as the chair rises majestically through the silence (that was)

Jonpim, I assume you sing loudly in low visibility so the people on the chair behind dont get lost Shocked

When in France, we sing French songs - but in dreadful English accents. As we've never seen the words written down we improvise. Frere uh Jacques uh means brother Jack but what on earth has Sunny Lemon Tina got to do with anything? Then there's Sur le Pont, Davin Yont. And there's Je t'aime, moi non plus. That's the best one as you don't have to know much French but just have seen the restaurant scene from When Harry met Sally Shocked Shocked wink.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Scarpa, your experience of both diabetes and extreme sports could be invaluable to people like my husband, an insulin dependent diabetic (albeit not prone to extremes; his idea of an extreme sport is going more than two hours without a restaurant stop). There are obviously quite a few diabetics around - maybe you could start a thread on diabetics on the snow? I will also look at the weblink you suggest - I am curious as to the effects of both cold and adrenalin on blood glucose levels. Some of my husband's results don't seem explicable when simply taking carbohydrate intake, GI values and exercise into account. And congratulations on doing blood tests and insulin shots on a chairlift without dropping the lot in the snow.

jedster, I presume that was in the USA - in France they would have been given medal.

In France but a British company...

jedster, how amorous would that be?

I tried subtle but that failed - they were shagging. Actually they were spotted getting dressed but admitted to the root cause

Jonpim, "I'm in the mood for dancing" by the Nolans is also a fave - one of the chaps 'published' a CD last year, "Songs from a Chairlift" included such other great hits as "Suspicious Minds" by Elvis, "Summer Lovin" - Grease and, of course, "You've lost that loving feelin'" by the righteous brothers....

No vote for Bohemian Rhapsody? Surely no one would venture on a chairlift without it.

pam w, I do keep everything in a bum bag inside my outer jacket so it's easy to keep things from falling.

Adrenalin does cause a rise in glucose levels

<the body reacts to the low blood glucose level by the production of counter-regulatory hormones, mainly adrenalin and glucagon. These hormones are the ‘fight and flight’ hormones that the body releases when there is any danger. Hypoglycaemia is a danger and these hormones give the warning symptoms of an impending hypo and trigger the release glucose from the liver>

... so a scary descent mid morning may lead to levels being a little high before lunch. Then more insulin is often taken which can give a mid afternoon hypo as exercise uses up the midday carbs Confused

It's always a real balancing act - especially if evenings involve much drunkeness. There can be quite complex effects from exercise and alcohol which persist for the entire next day.

John Denver wrote a song on one. Annie’s Song had the kind of appeal that Take Me Home Country roads had displayed a sweet and melodic tune with lyrics that expressed straightforward, simple emotions. It was written while Denver, an avid skier, was riding a ski lift in Switzerland. He says by the time he had finished the 10 minute ride the song was finished.
