On the rocks, your reticence is valid and understandable but I think and hope you're jumping the gun. There's a whole bunch of snow forecast over the next 10 days, so why don't you dhow this develops. Granted some of it will be accompanied by very heavy winds, which makes your safety concern very apt this year.
And there are some very well informed sources also concerned so you're in good company e.g. http://pistehors.com/most-unstable-snowpack-for-a-decade-in-alps-23122007.htm
I'm actually in Argentiere from the 27th for 15days, Mrs H isn't out until the 30th due to work, I know Chamonix as well as I know any place, as I, ve skied there about 15 times or so, so if you'd like to meet up for some safe off piste skiing pm me and we can meet up.
Also there is a good avalanche awareness talk each Monday evening at Le Terrace bar, which will give some good local pointers on the snowpack if you are there for a Monday.
If I were you I'd still go, but that's just me, safety is very mucha personal preference I .e. 1persons safe can be another's reckless!

horgand, Thanks for your thoughts. I've skied Argentiere a fair bit more than 15 days and also know the area well (inc some day tours). Also you are right the latest forecasts do look more hopeful so I'm going. It would be good to meet up; I'll pm you my contact details. I'll be arriving on the 26th and flying home on the 2nd (I'm staying in Gite Belvedere)

Whoyton1, 20-30cm will do nicely, going tomorrow evening, back Sunday evening 2 days skiing. My pals are there yesterday and today, say snow is not great but viz is bad today and its falling most of the afternoon and supposedly next 24 hours, been messing on reds today getting revved up for Saturday! I'm not expecting epic pow but just enough to create a few S's after 200 nights dreaming of freshies is enough for me, will sleep well tonight!!

And it would be good to meet up with a fellow snow head powder hound, as I'm fending for myself until the 30th when Mrs H arrives & a few of my ski buddies arrive for the 2nd week. I'll pm you my details.

Around 20cm at GM today, just about managing to settle to argentiere (in much smaller quantities). Gave it a much needed refresh but still a very hard base underneath on piste, with plenty of rocks about. Good fun WITH CAUTION off piste, both of avalanches and sharks (Some spectacular wipeouts caused by this, including the best example of a double ejection I've seen). Care with route choice is vital in preserving skis...

Has anyone been up Brevent today and know what the conditions are like? I have a couple of hours to kill before work tomorrow and suspect it could be ok up there because of the fairly heavy snow we had in town yesterday.
Btw I was up Grand montet yesterday and I think there was about 20 cms fresh. Best skiing I've had since the last snowfall.

Went skiing in Courmayer today - drove from Les Masses. Snowfall noticeably higher as soon as we were through the St Bernard Tunnel. Still fresh light powder in Courmayer whener not sun affected. If promised amounts land in Italy, skiing will be unbelievable...

Anyone know what the conditions are like in Les Houches atm? I am arriving on the 28th for 3 days. Hoping the the storms heading that way will bring snow and not rain! I understand the slopes in Les Houches are meadows too? which helps

jonkgray78, not your wing in Rio then ? I did wonder
LH should be fine with all the snow due this week, it looks relatively cold and as you point out 20cm should cover it all.
Worth considering a trip through the Mont Blanc Tunnel to Courmayeur, €1 for a coffee and excellent pasta too.
Enjoy.

Better than Chamonix, by all accounts (that was reported on a recent thread, but can't remember where). And the difference looks likely to be becoming greater.

Skiied in Courmayer on Sunday. Far more snow than across the border - the south facing slopes were sun affected but where the sun had not got to the powder - it was fresh and light. Should be masses of new snow arriving for them... but avalanche situation bound to be bad to begin with.

jsrt201, don't know but it's a top tip to avoid queues to go there.
Skied GM today. It was f windy high up and the top ticket was closed. Lower down less windy and snow not bad, plus not too crowded considering. Had a little play off piste in a couple of inches of fresh but glad I was on my old skis.
Le Tour was closed today.
