The snow was indeed nice higher up, as was the 15 minutes of visibility on the glacier. The rest of the day was best described as 'character-building'.

Well - it was much brighter today - but much windier! Everything was closed above 2,900m and even the top of the Petit Cretes was nasty. The snow was great though! Incredible - I skied down Valentin and found a number of hard patches still showing through, clearly the fresh snow hasn't really stuck to it. Anyway, I was a happy bunny to have the last lesson down in the village.
Pic is looking up from outside the restaurant at the Cretes - you can see there's a mountain there, which is a big improvement on yesterday!

Spent the last two days in La Grave, absolutely amazing conditions: 50cm of powder at the top of Vallons on Thursday although the vis wasn't fantastic so we spent a long time lapping the combe de Berger from P2 to P1. Yesterday most of the tracks had been filled in and with the better vis could really open up did Chancel to warm up then the Pateau (sp?) and the Freux couloir. Managed to get in a final lap of Vallons too to finish the day off.
Really sunny today but a bit windy. Last night was [b]kristof's[b] last as he's gone to get his knee sorted out so feeling a bit delicate today.

Aztec, Excellent - see you then!
It was a very sunny day, and quite warm int he afternoon, but no other news I'm afraid. I believe it was windy up high - but not so much that it was closed. Lots of snowheads arrived today (and some that aren't).

it was a truly beautiful day today. Very sunny, warm - almost too warm, we're not used to it. The snow was good everywhere except the Grande Pente at 15.30 where it was thick much. Pic looking down the Cretes to the Patache resto. Petite Aiguille in the mid-distance and the Pic Blanc etc in the distance.

Can anyone help?
Of the ski set shops Hibernatus, Brun Sports and Slide Planet, where am I most likely to get race GS skis and where has the best selection of current season stock?

Speaking of Cheltenham, my sister has been taking beginner ski lessons on the dry slope in Dublin and Colm Morris the trainer of Brave Inca that runs in the Champion Hurdle is in her class. There is a class tonight but obviously he won't be there!
easiski, thanks, so in general are Skiset shops fairly crap then!

Peter Ross, Not impressive. I asked Jacques of Jacques Sports (Sport 2000) why they were so bad and he said they focused on discount TO business (bit like the ESF really), so didn't spend the time or have the quality of the other shops. However I don't know anything bad about Slide Planet, so you should be OK. I've had run ins with Brun in the past for their skimen refusing to give my students short enough skis - I'm not enamoured of a shop who employs a pimply youth who says 'ski instructors don't know anything about skis'! so the Brun thing is probably a bit slanted!! Please ask your sister to tell Com Morris that I love his horse.
Aztec, Just about to start watching the vid. Only problem is that the skiing WC finals start tomorrow too, and I'm working all day and a bit of socialising with the group in the evening too ... where do I find about another spare 4 hours each day???
Today started off fairly OK, but cloudy. It wasn't too cold and it wasn't too windy in the village either, but it started to pour with snow about 14.00 and carried on - it's still snowing buckets right now. Will it ever stop we ask??? It was good in a way because it was lovely light powder snow and there wasnt' too much wind low down. Hopefully some nice sun tomorrow though.
pic is from the same place as Sunday's pic.

easiski, he's a nice horse although getting on a bit now, but he ran well. We have relations of Our Vic at home so hopefully he can run a big race tomorrow. I might wait 'til I get to the resort to get skis as I'd like to see what I can get.
Aztec, well done on backing Punjabi. I was watching the highlights last night and really wonder about the cross country race, They seem to go no pace and they are jumping nothing more than tall grass yet still some horses manage to finish tired! It's nothing like Punchestown where they jump much more technical fences like double banks. I reckon I'd beat a few of them on foot.

Hi,
Havn,t been to les deux alps before. Looking at getting a good deal on line and heading out there this saturday.
Just a couple of questions are there many tree linned runs.
There dosn,t seem to be many red runs mainly blues but i read somewhere that they a are mainly graded a little on the light side is this right or are we going to go and maybe need something a bit more intermediate than begginer. We do tend to cover a lot of distance each day.
Any greta runns you could reccomend we should not miss/mountain resturants
Cheers in advance

Peter Ross, I'm afraid both Brave Inca and Harchilbald looked as though their champion hurdle days are behind them. Old Hardy Eustace ran brilliantly though for an oldie. Great race and all the others too. I love the X country being an ex eventer myself it looks more fun. I did win our hunt one when I was up in Yorkshire about a million years ago!!
bigtoe, Sound like you've got the wrong end of the stick: We don't have many reds because lots of them are marked blue! Lots of black, lots of off piste, but not much cruising. A serious skiers resort. There are a lot of pistes and a lot of lines, but TBH from what you've said I'm not sure that LDA will suit you. Very little tree lined skiing. Suggest you look back through this thread at the many photos to get an idea of the terrain.
there are a lot of s out here this week, and a few more coming out next week, so if anyone wants to catch up then just let me know.
It was brilliantly sunny today, middling cold but the wind was massive - 72 kph on the glacier at 12.00. The face got tracked out very quickly, ditto the Pied Moutet, but I was able to find nice powder for my better group in the top of the Combe du Thuit. It was quite deep and none of them had successfully skied deep before, so that was good. There was about 10 cms of lovely stuff on the nursery slopes this morning - thank goodness they hadn't pisted it away - lovely satin! I did ski down the Grande Pente and went through the trees where I managed to find some skiable lines in really nice pow. Then tracked across, and with a little industry found enough freshies to make most of the middle of most of my turns in at aroun 16.30 or so. Better than it looked for sure.
2 pix - both from the top of the Coolidge: one looking up towards the Tete Moute and Super Diable with snow being blown off the top, and the other looking down across to the Viking from the same place.

Best run in my opinion is Grand Couloir, steep black with plenty of moguls, in nice cosy valley, under Bellecombe lift.
The blacks back to the village are rather exposed.
Easier runs (red) are Deversoit or Voute (the gullies I prefer when it is windy)
Also plenty of other good reds, eg above Le Diable

It's been a lovely day today - apart from the wind. Again, very high winds at altitude (which is nearly everywhere here). Pic from the first bend of the Demoiselles looking over towards Valentin, Grande Pente and Cretes

It's been a fabulous day. fantastic sunshine, warm, and not too much wind. It was breezy at 2,900m but not positively windy. really hot on the Cretes though. To be fair the Grande Pente snow was very heavy at 17.00 or a bit later, but otherwise the snow was good everywhere.
forgot to say pic is of winter snowpark at the Toura - not as big or good as the summer one, but still quite big.

easiski, I'll be there on Sunday for skier cross racing! Looking at your pic above is my course inspection! A great Gold Cup today, race really went to form, but would have preferred if the Irish bred Denman won, but he ran a great race. Regarding the cross country the fences are so small I don't think you'd see them in a novice event, 128cm ponies jump bigger obstacles!
