I am also following with interest since I booked flights to Geneva today for March 21st.... Let's hope winter is coming late this year (as opposed to not at all!). Staying in Les Gets for a long weekend.

Conditions in the Pre la Joux area were exceptional this morning (until the light went flat at lunchtime) and were just about as good as you can get on piste.

its the control run (which is slightly different to the main operational run - so you have the operational run, the control run and then a load of ensembles. I never use the GFS ensembles for any snow forecast info and can't really fathom why they are used in this manner, as they just appear to confuse people.

pam w, they were yesterday - well not the Chamois down to the village on the Mt Chery side but that has very often been the case in the years that we have been here. We were skiing in Les Gets yesterday and I don't think anything was/is closed. We were over on the Chatel Linga side today - and it was all good - the light was going a bit flat as Chatel Snow, said but we were stopping for lunch at about 2. The run back down the car park at Ardent a couple of hours later was much better than I expected - busy as usual at that time of day.
Rather a lot of runs today with a bunch of legs a lot younger than ours!

I was just wondering how important snow depths are? I see Ski Club are reporting around 170cm on the top pistes. What is the average for this time of year? Does the snow depth make a massive difference to off piste skiing, or is it generally safe as long there is a decent covering of rocks etc? I can't imagine it makes much difference on piste

I think the general rule is the more snow the better! As far as I am aware, snow depths are near to normal in this area above 1800m and below normal on the lower slopes.
On piste, it depends on what is under the piste ie rocks or grass etc and whether the piste has been man made ie cleared of rocks etc. You can have tons of snow, but still get stones and rocks on piste - so its all down to local variations ( snow quality, altitude, which way the piste faces etc ) and how they are maintained. I think the general rules is you need about 30cm for a piste to be able to open, but this year some of the lowers slopes are running with less than this!
Off piste the same applies - however you generally need more snow as there is no human intervention on the surface below. Off piste is not safe if everything is covered, as there are obviously the risks of avalanche etc. This year the avalanche risk is high due to an unstable layer underneath the snow... info here

I think one of the things in the favour of the PdS is that because a lot of the pistes are on grass (cow or goat pasture) they don't need a lot of snow, unlike some places where there is a lot of exposed rock for example. i have often thought it matters little whether the snow beneath you is 30cm or 200cm deep, as you are only ski-ing on the top bit anyway.
Obviously this doesn't apply off-piste and of course a big depth does mean it will last longer before it all melts. But in the here and now, to ski today, a huge depth beneath you makes little difference. IMO.

Full list here of Les Gets runs open / closed. I'm not sure how regularly it is updated but it seems to have changed from when I looked at it over the weekend.

I really hope this keeps up - I've been to PdS upteen times and never skied there - I'll be over next Thursday for a couple of days and really want to try it out.

travelwomble, I think there have been a number of threads and links about Tunnel Creek but thanks for the reminder. As you say well worth reading and watching again. Peer-pressure can be a factor in some cases but also situation awareness which seems to be a hot topic for human factors training in all kinds of industries at the moment. In fact thinking about it in Roger Pierce's account he describes a change of perception of where he was skiing very clearly but decided to ski his original line anyway. He recognises that as a mistake I think in his commentary later on.

zvordauk, that is the list of lifts openings and nothing of a surprise there. The Mouilly aux Chats lift only tends to run when it is very busy, if the Ranfoilly lift is not functioning, and also if the Nauchets lift is not running. Its rather old and I think gets a lot of resting time.
We were on the Melezes a few times first thing this morning and it was practically deserted - then went back towards the Rosta bowl around 10.30 and everyone seemed to be arriving then. We ventured down F to have a cup of coffee at Nathalie's by the bottom of the Atray lift. Very very sparse at the end of that run.... definitely hopping the mud there to get to the snow again.
It seemed as if something was going to happen around 12 in the way of rain/snow but in the event nothing transpired.

Its on its way this evening by the looks of it - and plenty should have fallen above 1500m by this time tomorrow - maybe 30 to 40cm. Not sure what to expect at 1200m and lower.

Do your latest forecasts still have a big fall overnight up high?
Latest I've seen (GFS 12Z) has it more moderate than previously shown.

Latest NAE has it at 30 to 40cm in our neighbourhood - that's the 12z run (the latest). Looking at the GFS again (12z) its maybe 20cm - ish. Meteo France are 30cm. The Euro4 model 12z run is not out yet, but at lunchtime it was suggesting 25cm plus.
I think 30 to 40cm is possible at 1500m+
I'm still optimistic about this one - but the uncertainty lies in how much will fall lower down and when will the rain turn to snow down here etc.

Thanks for that. Will settle for a decent fall above 1500m, although some in Morzine when I arrive tomorrow would be delightful.

Looks to me like the 20th/21st should at least add a layer lower down, so if this next lot is rain in the villages, it should at least be covered up a few days later? Looks like temps should drop in a few days too.
