Went to SkiWelt today. A couple of things that might be of interest to those planning a trip to Austria.
There was no check on vaccination status either entering or leaving Austria. I used the Inntal autobahn which would be the most used route for anyone flying into Munich and transferring to an Austrian resort. On entering Austria there is a cabin which at some point in the past was used for checks but it clearly has not been used for some time. On returning to Germany there is the checkpoint which has been there since the refugee "crisis" in 2016, but they are not interested in checking vaccination certs only on the look out for trucks with illicit passengers.
In the resort QR codes were being scanned both at the ticket desk & in restaurants. The woman in front of me at the tickets desk had a paper of some sort, which seemed to cause grief as it wouldnt scan. There was a fair amount of discussion with the person in the ticket office pointing at the woman's phone, which clearly didnt have an app on it. She did get her ticket in the end but it was grief, clearly the expectation is that people will have the code on their phones (everyone I saw being checked at a restaurant produced a phone).
The lifties were being very strict about masks first thing at the main gondola. However for all the chair lifts on the mountain, whether they had a "bubble" or not and despite signs, saying "wear a mask past this point", the lift bods were not wearing them nor were they asking anyone else to. I found the best thing to do was to fix one side to my helmet strap, it was them easy to fix the other side to a clip when needed (but gave up when I realised no one was being asked to). It was very quiet today so maybe things would be different on a busy day. |
All pretty similar to when we were there over New Year, I purchased day passes in Söll and Scheffau and at the time we didn’t have a QR code for our booster and found the ladies working at the ticket desks most helpful and took the time to check our paper work

@fuzzydunlop, same in Kitzbuhel re Covid passes & masks. Slopes appeared quite busy but that may be due to having so little open because of the weather.

This is from UK gov site
If you’re fully vaccinated
You must show either proof of full vaccination or recent (within the past 180 days) recovery from COVID-19 to enter Austria. You should also present a negative PCR test not more than 72 hours old when you arrive.
If you received a booster vaccination 120 days or more after your second shot, you do not need to provide a PCR test. For arrivals on and after 1 February 2022, this reduces to 90 days. Proof of recovery in the past 180 days, alongside two vaccinations, counts as a booster.
Without a negative PCR test or proof of a booster at the time of entry, you must fill in a pre-travel clearance form and enter quarantine. You can leave quarantine with a negative PCR test result.
Proof of vaccination status
For two-shot vaccines (e.g. AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna), you must show that you received the second injection no more than 270 days before arrival.
For the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, you must show that you received a booster no more than 270 days before arrival.
If you received a booster more than 120 days after being fully immunised (90 days from 1 February 2022), this must not have been more than 270 days before arrival.
Different vaccine validity rules apply once in Austria: two-dose vaccinations are only valid for 180 days (210 days for under 18 year olds). A booster is still valid for 270 days.

@robandliza, this sounds like an open and shut case of IDB by the airline, and you will be entitled to statutory EC261 compensation. BA have had a good few 'hiccups' like this where they have relied on outdated information from VeriFLY, or basically just have incompetent check in agents.
My advice is - enjoy your trip, and once you're back, take a look at the BA forum on the Flyertalk website - there is a huge thread on flight compensation and lots of experts that will help you with your claim. |
That sounds good advice, thank you. It’s all ok now but it was so stressful at the time

Just visited Alpendorf, from Manchester via Munich.
Full checks at airport leaving and landing - but al very quick and efficient.
No checks at Austrian border going in.
Bars and restaurants seemed random with checking regime.
German police stopped our coach going back over the border - everyone off the coach and all certs and passports checked.
Usual check back at Munich airport, but all bars and restaurants check vax status before letting anyone in.

@robandliza, What was the issue? Did BA not accept triple vaxxed as proof to board? We are on the same flight in 2 weeks so a tad concerned. |
They insisted on a negative Covid test. They did not know the rule had changed as from last Monday. My wife talked to a BA lady and she then called Austria for confirmation (yes, really) then they let us and others check our bags in. If I’d had a printer at home and been able to print off my boarding pass I guess this would have been avoided but I don’t
Anyway we’re here now and loving it even though I am currently stuck in a hut drinking beer as the snow continues to fall. There are worse places to be stuck

@Red Squirrel, really sorry but I didn’t notice. The only time we went into Maria Alm was on our middle Saturday when we didn’t ski, took the bus from Hinterthal to Maria Alm and it was tipping with snow. We did go into Billa but afraid I didn’t see more than Billa and the bus stop. How dull was that!

@james75, Just the NHS covid pass going out; the same coming back, but with the UK passenger locator form needed.
Lufthansa staff insisted on giving paper copies of the German PLF to passengers heading to Austria, but it is not needed and was not requested in Munich.

@NickYoung, the German form is most certainly is requested by the Border police in Munich. Both times I have been through is was checked along with vaccine certificates (not a cursory glance either) for everyone before they were allowed to access the passport machines. I am sure that if you can prove you are transiting to Austria they would accept that too, it is the airlines that are painful with that.

The Bachwirt was open at Christmas and New Year but with just a few ski instructors around the outdoor 'barrel' tables. Nothing like other years when it is really buzzing out there from 4 'til 8 ish.
The bars at foot of Aberg & Hinterthal were also closed at this time. The cafe at base of Aberg was open but no outdoor seating just the indoor tables and smoking 'conservatory'.
Most mountain cafes were open with checks of vaccine status from your phone.
We will be back there in a couple of weeks so maybe you could ley me know what's open when you are there.

Anybody transitting through Germany? We are flying to Salzburg via Frankfurt. Every time I think I have got this understood, I find another pothole. My grandson 'recovered' 100 days ago so is good to enter Austria with a 72 hr pcr. However I have just come across something in the German regulations that state that for them the recoveerd status only lasts 90 days so he has to have a 48 hr pcr. That's going to be tight. Also, Austria seems to be high risk, so we all have to PCR to transit Germany on our return, so 4 more chances to get quarantined. Hoping that somebody will tell me I have this wrong!

@dedders, as you are only transiting Germany none of this is an issue, you do not need additional tests. If you look above this has been covered a number of times (with links to the relevant German websites). Again as mentioned a number of times you might find your airline insists on filling in the Germain arrivals form, even though it is not required for transit, if they do simply fill in the form giving Frankfurt airport as the address in Germany (the post code is the important bit). Although you wont actually be entering Germany you will have to enter Schengen ie passports in Frankfurt so make sure you have confirmation of hotel or whatever in Austria (clearly you will have your boarding pass) just in case you have any issues (unlikely).

Thanks. I think the shortening of the PCR to 48 hours from 72 hours seems needed for my grandson. I guess we can sweat the return once we are there

@munich_irish, No, the guard asked where we were going and what we were doing and did not ask for the locator form. No-one else got asked to provide it either (there were 28 of us).
Of course, I have a very honest face.

The rules have changed over the last week, and are about to change again tomorrow, but we found when we flew to Austria on 22nd Jan that nobody looked for anything related to our coming from Northern Ireland. British & Irish passport holders were treated the same (as if they were Irish) in Dublin.
We were diverted on arrival to Linz rather than Innsbruck, so can't say how Innsbruck immigration would be, but the border police at Linz didn't ask for any info other than covid & regular passports.
Returning to Dublin, I entered through the automatic gate so no covid info was requested.

We are in wastlalm at the moment and pretty much everything is open bar the chair to top of aberg due to conditions
Dengl is well and truly open albeit quieter. Bachwirst also open although quieter too
Masks required for lifts although not rigorously enforced.
Skiing with them really isn’t an issue. Just use them as chin warmers until the lift. Considering what we have gone through over the last couple of years and then my experience at Heathrow , this is nothing. It’s just great to be here
Much much quieter as you would expect. I would say 25% if usual at most. I have booked all our restaurants but I don’t it was needed. Having said that, Jufenalm was pretty busy last night
Snow stopped falling and clouds starting to lift but still to
E for another beer me thinks
More to follow

Is it 270 days from the second or last booster?
My 2nd: June 21, booster: December 21, travelling March 22
Thats 289 days from my second, but less than 270 since the booster.
Austria.info site suggests "2nd or additional " but its not clear.

Green pass app gives 1-touch access whereas my nhs one needs sign in every time. Otherwise either will do.
I've found virtually every shop and cafe/bar/restaurant will ask for it.

Does anyone have experience of the ninja pass? Do establishments expect it to be shown in the same way as they would an adult and their app? My 13 year old will need one as only 1 jab so far. My 11 year old is as tall so we may need to take their passport everywhere to prove they don't need a ninja pass!
