This is my first post here (I think?) A group of us arriving in Morzine this Sunday. Been to Morzine several times before and had separate 2 weeks skiing there last season, where snow conditions went from bad to worse. We ski Morzine & PDS at least once a year as everything's so familiar. Snow reports / piste conditions so far have been good, but reading some of above comments has worried me slightly. We're not off piste or die hard black run skiers, so where's the best conditions at the mo? |
Worried!!! Don't be. These are the best snow conditions you're ever likey to experience. Welcome to snowheads.

Coming out on Thursday with my boyfriend who has never skied. If you hear two Northern Irish people arguing on the slopes, it'll likely be us. Hope to goodness our chalet offers a bit of guiding as not keen on skiing alone but don't want to be stuck doing that Serassiaux for three days. I was in Morzine last January and it was getting a bit bare at that stage - I'm assuming conditions will be much better this time.

Just back from 4 days in PdS, based in Morzine but skiing all over. Conditions very varied in that, within space of 48 hours, had rainy slush [down low in Morzine], perfect, blissful powder [above about 1750 m, everywhere], sheet ice [around Ardent, Monday morning], and the Wall as easy - so said the cognocenti (was my first time down it) - as it ever gets with no ice, a small covering of fresh snow and by its own standards, itty bitty moguls. Les Gets was delightful, particularly Pointe de Chery. Although it's been warm and periodically raining below about 1500 m, the quantity of snow this month means things remain fantastic.

How "rainy" is "rainy". About 5-6 years ago in La Plagne, it was so "rainy" that our ski jackets and salopettes got soaked through the waterproofing and we were all drenched. Not very pleasant.
Is it so "rainy" at PdS that we should bring 2 ski jackets each?

jamescollings, it was damp, rather than soaking. It's always worth having a second jacket in a resort that's at 1000m. You'd be unlucky to get soaked though.

jamescollings, I doubt that you would need two ski jackets. Have you considered a goretex type fabric?
My first ski jacket wasn't anything special and even so it dried out overnight, hung over the bath, on a very wet ski holiday. Even better now that we upgraded to much improved fabric a few years back.

Hi all,
Would anyone be able to recommend a good instructor for my girlfriend who's never skied before? We are staying in Chatel 17-27 Feb. Would prefer one 2 one, although a small group would probably be ok.
Thanks

It's been snowing big light fluffy flakes of wonderfulness! Little covering here in Champery as I can hear the plow clearing my road. Hopefully a great powder day in store. Not so good for the Welsh Ski Champs and FIS race that's here all week. I would bin the skinny race skis and hire some fat boys for a day of fun!

Well conditions were not quite as light and fluffy as I was expecting! Have to say snow and vis was loads better Swiss side too this morning. Top of Fornet this morning had very strange snow, quite heavy almost like it had rained or had some hail?? Further down improved and better Linderets side for sure. Runs back to Les Crosets were great fun and snow off Grand Conche was lovely.

Intersting day today. Had to shake about 3cm of sonow off the car cover this morning but before we had got 500m down the orad, there was no snow on the roads; we must have been at the snow limit (which we watched last night out of our window). Drove down (from Les Cret, Montriond) to the car park at the bottom of the Perrieres chair. Although it was overcast, the visability was fine as we headed over to Morzine.
We hit a bit of a snag when we ducked down the blue path just after the Vaffieu to get round the front of the Pleney. We got about 200m down the run (just after the turn to the red run) and the piste had disappeared under a small avalanche. After deciding that there was no way to cross or traverse the obsticle, we had to walk back up the run. We were thus well warmed up by the time we met up with friends at the bottom of the Pleney.
Spent most of the day over on Mt Chery. Snow was great at the top (getting a little sticky at the bottom), with the notable exception of the black off the Les Planeys chair (the one off the side as it were) which a brave group decided to ski and found even more horrible than usual. Visability alternated between poor to terrible with a little flurry of snow at one point.

Hi,
Can anyone provide an update on the state of the lifts linking Les Crosets with Champoussin ? I know there have been temporary little drags in place for last couple of seasons... and was wondering if there has been any change. Was planning to get over toward Morgins from Avoriaz.
|
|
|
|
|
|
fast_cat, we came back over from Morgins back to Les Crosets last week and no temporary drags, from memory (not too good) there were a couple of T bars, or maybe one, and then two chairs. Last chair goes up high and then just a ski down into Les Crosets off the bottom of the Mossettes. Someone who knows more of the correct names will no doubt be along. Didn't take us very long at all. Went over to Morgins via the Mossettes lift from French side.

The bank above and to skier's left of that cut-through is a good 40+ degrees (and a great practice slope for that terrain), which is why they quite often close that cut-through run.

fast_cat, Coming down, from Mossettes, there is a short button lift "Gueilly" and from there either ski down to the tbar Champeys at the Champoussin lift pass office, or take Pointe de L'Au chair and ski down the blue into Champoussin/Morgins; or of course to Morgins there is that long blue that goes direct, missing out Champoussin, but is very very flat for much of its length. There is also a newish red "Defago" from near the top of Pointe de L'Au that joins onto this.
Going the other way, from Morgins, in Champoussin you will need to take the tbar Sepaya (or take Bochasses in Morgins) and then the chairlft Aiguille Des Champeys at the goat farm, from top ski down to Pointe de L'Au chair and from top of there you can ski to Crosets.
You may be thinking of the old rope pull that was in place while Pointe De L'Au was broken, that's gone now.
Edit: and yes i know this the wrong thread before i get any cleverdick comments

In our very mixed ability and mixed enthusiasm group, there wasn't a single person who wanted to retire to a restaurant on any of our 4 days. Apart from anything else, it isn't difficult to get above the rain/snow line.

fast_cat;
replying to my own post..thanks for other updates...Got to Morgins from Avoriaz, and yes just the small button to get you across towards Point de l'au lift.
Coming back the small rope pull has gone, so no problems getting back to Les Crosets. Have to say the new red (Didier DeFago ) down to the long slow blue into Morgins was great..no one else on it and some good powder to the sides. Shame that the only way back is the long blue to Morgins. Would be nice if a lift appeared near the end of the red to get you back to top.
In fact quite a lot of the chairs/ drags/T bars are looking very dated in the area between Morgins and Les Crosets.. I guess there would be massive cost but a nice new piste and lift system on the north side of the valley between Morgins and Mosettes would do nicely. Wouldn't suffer like the south side due to sun and lack of snow.
Also I didn't note today when I skied pass, but see that the drop down into this valley from just past Mosettes (Tovasieur ??) is no longer on the piste map ,so the only way in is Defago or off-piste ?
cheers

Wozzy, FlyingStantoni, indeed they are - Les Gets side this morning was great and then over to Mt Chery and lovely there too. It was interesting to see the amount of damage that the trees along the ridge to the Marmotte run must have suffered in the stormy weather at the weekend, all solidly white still with lots of broken branches. The cloud suddenly blew up the valley about 3.30 and the bottom of the Chamois run back to the village was cloaked in cloud, as was the bottom of the Bruyeres on the way home later but quite clear by the Follietts lift.
