Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

We're stopping in Val D'I first week of March and the talk about dietary requirements is really useful folks... Mrs P is celiac so always struggles to find gluten free. The Oxygene cafe is a great pointer for a lunch option that we'd never have found... be great if you can post any more that spring to mind (either for lunch anywhere in EK...sorry Val-Tignes Smile - or in VdI town for evening options)...

Make that an awesome day Very Happy Such a bonus that the weather finally cleared.

Quite busy on some pistes first thing but improved a lot early pm. The snow is now generally excellent just about everywhere, although the wind has affected some spots, both on and off piste - ie slick bits on piste and slight windblown crust off piste.

@brovert, From memory Maison de Tignes had a bagagerie (sp?). A friend stores his ski kit at Tignes Spirit between trips. Might be worth asking there.

@stewart woodward, The need for speed! (soz couldn't resist!).

I was hoping for a lie in this morning, but, of course, that was curtailed from first light when the pisteurs started chucking explosives about. So, set off for Bourg as the cupboards were bare. It was hell on the middle aisle! This afternoon was spent collecting lift pass, carte neige and associated trivia that accompanies owning a flat. I was qu=quite envious of those out skiing, although according to Henry there was some luck escapes, same risk tomorrow folks, take care off piste.

The weather for the next few days is going to be varied, a cold front passes over us tomorrow afternoon and then another on Friday from mid morning onwards. The models are having a tiff over Saturday, anything could happen really snow or sun, but it will remain mild so is there is snow for transfer day it will only be the last 300m or so.

Tomorrow will start bright with a veiled sky, the cloud will slowly thicken through the morning and it should start snowing shortly after lunch, it will be a bit soggy below the Dam and the wind will pick up at altitude later. Thursday looks like being a nice day, sunny spells and fairly fast moving cloud at height, maybe the high lifts will close. Friday will be snowy and windy, cloudy from the lift opening times, when the snow starts is open for debate, between breakfast and lunch. Expect the higher parts of the resort to be closed in a whiteout. As for Saturday, stay tuned, one model has the weather 100 miles to the North, the other right over us. Stay tuned.

Off to dig out the ski kit!

First day in skis and its really quite good in most places! There was a red sky warning over the porridge but the morning was good with a high veil of cloud but it deteriorated quite quickly after 12, as the skies darkened and the light snow started. By 1430 it was snowing somewhere between moderately and heavily, it is easing off now and will peter out in the evening, but another 5cm or so. I started with a couple of runs on Palafour to see if I had my legs on the right way up and then met a friend who was red runs and below. We scooted down to La Daille which was absolutely fine and then bussed to the Centre and up Solaise. With L and Santons shut (lack of snow) a little thought has to go into navigation to avoid blacks or dark reds. After and up and over I was quite surprised to see how little snow there is over there compared to over here, the off piste looks very bare on Pays Desert and was surprised by the length of the queues for the Col drags (as the resorts are quiet). But then we discovered there is only enough snow to run one of the drags. Piste Cascades on the glacier is also missing. On the way down to the top of the Cable Car there were a few gravelly patches but generally fine and the available runs on the glacier were in really good nick. After a quick lunch at Cascades it was home via the Solaise and a download and up to Bellvarde where the toxic mix of haily snow and the 3 day skiers that 'have to get to the Folie' was not pleasant. Home for tea and medals.

Tomorrow will start with sunny spells, light winds and a good morning. The cloud will thicken later in the day as the storm approaches. The snow will arrive soon after daylight on Friday and the wind will pick up, closing the higher lifts if they open in the first place. It will develop quickly into a whiteout with gusts up to 60k and moderate to heavy snow through late morning and the afternoon. The snow intensity will drop into the evening, but overall 10-20cm of snow is currently expected. The models are starting to agree on Saturday which should be pretty good for travelling, sunny spells in the morning followed by cloud thickening in the afternoon, it will feel quite warm in the village. After Friday there will be lots of avi work to do, maybe even some above the roads, so don't start off too early, if you are relatively local. The sndw (or sleet below the Dam) will begin late evening and then its going to be another snowy and windy one through must of Sunday. Forecast amounts of snow vary wildly from 10 cm as a minimum to over 50 as a maximum. The forecast beyond that is for more snow ans a drop in temperatures. We were skiing down the bottom half of the Chardonet bowl this morning when a large avalanche was triggered skiers’ left from halfway down the Grapilon. It went a fair way and caused a large cloud. Nobody caught and it seemed to have been triggered by a single skier (possibly a guide) skiing by themselves. Its path was not too far from a guided group. Spectacular and worrying.

My Daughter emailed them today, highlighting she was a Vegan (mentioned on booking) and would be arriving as a Crystal client. She got a very encouraging and helpful reply within an hour, saying that it wouldn't be a problem, that the kitchen would be advised immediately and to highlight again on check in.

I am getting better vibes than when we went to the Cachette in Les Arcs, when it was owned by Belambra.....and I suspect the Diva would be similarly poor, being Belambra owned.

It is really helpful to get an ongoing report on runs that are a bit gravelly - which hopefully will be improved with additional snowfall over the next 10 days.

Cascades is on my list for serving some Vegan dishes.....hopefully.

@Old Fartbag, I think it helps that the 2100 is run and owned by a company that descibes themselves as Scandanavian at heart. That is of course after they had to install courtesy glass in the en suite bathrooms. Langley is a Swedish company.

Langley run Victors in Val d'isere, the Rendelhof Hotel in St Anton and no doubt other hotels in ski resorts.

I've only stayed in the Rendelhof which was very good. They sell ski holidays to the UK through Crystal, the staff are Swedish and provide a better than the "normal" Crystal holiday offering.

Hi All,

Back again, just looking at ski lessons more seem to have become available since I last checked, private lessons aren't a viable option for us as she wants to do every morning or at least three mornings, so that she can built on what she learnt, and she wants to ski with others who are a similar level.

My difficulty in helping her pick the right class is that she is a much better skiier when with an instructor again as she has confidence that he/she will keep her safe (the instructor took lots of video). She is starting to ski reds with me, slightly cautiously, but she skiied down a red to get out of clouds without having a total panic attack which she would have done in the past on just a steep blue. She wants to get to the point where she could happily ski down a red, in her words to be able to get to any bar or restaurant. I am also struggling to pick the right ski school as she doesn't like to feel pushed into doing something but does do will if encouraged to do something.

So while I realise totally subjective I was wondering if anyone would recommend a certain ski school. I like the idea of evolution2 as you have to get your level roughly right then they sort you into groups on the first morning, where as ESF seem to have you need to choose the right class before hand.

Separately we are there with some mates who snowboard (I ski), me and two of them were looking for a guide/instructor for the first or second day to show us where is good as we haven't been to tignes for ages/ good to know where we are likely to find the best snow, and potentially some lift served off piste. Is there anyone you would recommend for this?

Marvellous morning! After yesterdays snow the skies cleared so it was cold overnight and the on piste snow was in excellent condition. There was a chill wind at height (the cable car was shut). I stayed local in the Palet area with the ski buddies and the pistes were excellent and running quick, its not often I get to Merles without poling! We did do Lanches and Vanoise, same excellent conditions up there. The new snow off piste was sloughing a bit, some areas look covered now, others don't - look before you leap. After lunch the skies became overcast and just before it got dark the wind really picked up in the village and a few flocons appeared.

Right its barely worth writing any type of forecast beyond Saturday, the weather models are varying wildly and swinging between each run. So I'll keep it brief beyond then A cold front will pass tomorrow and another one is heading from the north on Sunday, maybe. There may be a few more light showers tonight, damp below the Dam maybe. Tomorrow will be cloudy and it looks like on and off light snow for most of the day. The wind will blow above about 2700m, especially in the afternoon. If we are lucky the days accumulation may be 10cm. Saturday currently looks OK with a mix of sunny spells and cloud, the wind should abate till after dark when there might be a light shower or two. Sunday will be windy at altitude, there may be some sunny spells in the morning depending on how far and how quickly the front moves south and then snow, as for how much throw a dice and multiply by 10 and you'll have some idea. From Monday onwards it will be unsettled, much colder and very unsettled with high winds, again there will be snow it could be a lot. But there will be closed lifts and an increase in avalanche risk, as for the detail we'll have to wait.
