After reading the wonderful http://grangedalice.blogspot.co.uk/ blog this evening I looked at the picture of the drag lift where the Combettes lift is and thought ah! that is the Pierre_Blanche lift that I have only ever seen occasionally run in recent years. Then again I suddenly thought, wait a minute I cannot recall seeing it at New Year. The question is "when was it removed?"
The other question is "can we still trace the black piste that went down to Arc1600 from the top of the cachette between the two red pistes of Rouelles and the Cachette.

More powder days! After a cold night the snow was still light and fluffy in most places protected from the sun and wind. After meeting up we all headed over to the top of Les Coches and a couple of runs down near the Crozats chair before going to the bottom of the valley.
Then the weather started to change and we lost the visibility. Time to head for the trees. After a run down to the cross country course in the forest we stopped for lunch. Time to head for the trees again.
After a few good runs down through the forest we started to head for home with one last run down under the chair. What a fun time we all had.
Take a look at the photos I have just posted if you are interested in seeing where we went today. It was snowing just now outside so tomorrow should be another powder day. Happy days are here again!!

Anyone else use the Les Arcs app on iPhone? The weather forecast is so bizarre, for last two days it's been showing bright sun for today and now that its here and as you can see from thefatcontrollers picture it is indeed bright sun, the app shows cloud all day! Hey Ho breakfast over its time to go to the slopes.

Bizarrely the guy behind the meat counter suggested he rub pork loin in the sunburn, not sure if he was being genuine or was just in such shock he said the 1st thing that came to his head. Does rubbing pork in your face heal or cool sunburn? |
Maybe he was thinking of griddling the pork loin for supper...

Nope definitely suggesting he rubbed it in his face. Still the most bizarre, and sore case of sunburn I have ever seen.

Probably wasn't our best move. those that know the area will know that just below the 2nd lift out of Villroger is a monstrous mogul field, well imagine it after 3 days of snow. They weren't moguls they were sky scrpaers. Not a place for boarders. We died a thousand deaths and screamed a lot but we got through it alive, just.
|
whynot use the road and go around the side? If skiing with beginners that's the direction I point them.

Made the mistake of trying to go down through this mogul field for a late lunch in Villaroger this time last year. It must have been pushing 20 degrees in the sun and it was unquestionably the most horrendous experience of my life. Bailed half way down on to the path which was in a similar state due to the volume of traffic on it as everyone left the moguls alone.

Spring has arrived. Warm today for the 1st time, though no huge damage to the snow. Long lazy lunches for everyone which makes skiing between 12-2 a joy
The roads look fine, the snow is great so those coming out will have a blast.
We are off tonight, overnight train to Paris. Been an amazing week (and for March).
Got some videos which I will post when back.

Was away in 'Val Thorens' today so no update from me about Les Arcs. Will be back on home ground tomorrow so will post an update on conditions in the afternoon.
For anyone driving out the roads are clear lower down right now and you are only likely to need chains if you are driving on the minor roads around the resort.
Look forward to seeing some of you over the coming holiday period.
If you are interested in reading about what we did in 'Val Thorens', take a look at the Three Valleys thread on here: http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=92081&start=560

Very mixed conditions today. As it was a Saturday and 'changeover' day there were not many people about and know lift queues anywhere.
I started the day meeting up with friends and heading over to Arc 1800 on piste to join a few more before going across to the forest pistes of Peisey Vallandry for a few runs. We then went down through Arc 2000 to Bois de l'Ours chair and up to the Arpette ridge before heading down the pistes to Arc 1600.
After a run through Arolles piste we went back to the Arc 2000 bowl and over towards Villaroger. At the end of an enjoyable mornings skiing around most of Les Arcs ski domain with friends we had lunch and then it was time for something a little harder.
Headed up the Aiguille Rouge and made two laps of the North Face by different routes back down to the Varet Gondola. Even in poor light the snow was good on the sheltered face and gave us a chance to really challenge ourselves before heading home.
Despite the poor light at times, the pistes all over Les Arcs were in very good condition with loads of snow about and a nice firm surface to carve on. Whether on blues, reds or blacks you will enjoy the conditions, but try and follow the sun to give the pistes a chance to soften up. It is spring skiing conditions right now.
The off piste in the sheltered areas was also very good with pockets of untracked powder still to be found. On the more exposed slopes the snow has a hard crusty texture until it has had a chance to soften. Whether 'off piste' or on the 'piste natur's' you need to get the time of day right for the best conditions.
Anyone out this week or next. There is plenty of snow around so you will have good conditions if you plan your day carefully.
If you are interested in seeing what it was like today, take a look at my photos on the Les Arcs Winter facebook page in the March 2013 Album Three. Enjoy!

Monday was a total 'white out' most of the day.
Despite the weather we managed to ski the whole length of the Paradiski domain. Started from Arc 1600 and headed over to
the Vanoise Express (VE). Then across to Plagne Centre and Montalbert. Back up and across to Champagny for lunch.
Then up to the top of Roche de Mio. Still a 'white out' so did not go down the back off piste. Instead through the 'Tunnel of Dreams'
to Plagne Bellecote (take a look at the light show and noises) and back to the VE via a nice off piste route through the forest.
Once in Peisey a fast ski to the Transarc mid station then down to Arc 2000 and up the Lanchette chair and all the way to Villaroger.
Finally back up the chairs and down through Arc 2000 and a stop at George's Wine bar in Arc 1950 for a nice drink before heading home.
All the pistes everywhere were in good condition after the recent snow. The visibility was very poor for most of the day but we had
know problem reaching any of the stations. Only managed one off piste route today on very mixed snow due to poor light. I hope
we get some more snow to freshen up the off piste areas again.
Considering the weather conditions today, we still enjoyed our ski across the domain and look forward to better weather tomorrow.
I will post a few photos from today shortly in the March 2013 Album Three on my Les Arcs Winter facebook page.

Wednesday. What a day! The sun came out and there was fresh snow on the ground. Time to head for the glacier and see what powder we could find!!
As expected, the Aiguille Rouge Glacier was predicted to be late opening an therefore very busy so we headed over to the Bellecote glacier instead.
After a very fast ski across to Roche de Mio, headed over the cliffs and into the bowl. Fresh snow most of the way down. Light and soft. This was going to be a good day!
Then up top and made two more laps of the bowl in untracked powder most of the way and some steep gullies to test every ones nerve.
Then onto the North Face for more fresh track first in powder then spring snow. Finally hitting some breakable crust towards the finish.
After a late lunch took the bus back to Peisey and a ski over to the Waterslide above Arc 1600 for a bit of fun in the sun before a drink at the Arpette and home.
A really good day. The off piste was very good again after a little freshening up of the last few days. The piste were firm, but good to ski and held an edge well. They say the weather is on the change again. Shall have to wait and see in the morning!
Photos of the last few days will be posted later in the March 2013 Album Three of my Les Arcs Winter facebook page. Enjoy!
