Samerberg Sue, Well like I said, if it was just my experience I would accept that the deficiency lay at my feet, but I am pretty good at navigation, in fact fanatical, because I hate the idea of not knowing where I am. I Have a great respect for sudden changes in weather conditions, and knowing my limitations with regard to skiing ability and my energy levels, so I never get myself into an awkward, potentially dangerous situation. I ski slowly and carefully, don’t ski blacks or off piste. I am always the designated map reader and route finder and pride myself on being pretty good at it. The only time I ever take a wrong turning or start the wrong route, is when the markings don’t match the map, the map doesn’t match the board, and routes have numbers or names on them that don’t match anything at all. All of which I, and many other seasoned skiers encountered in the SkiWelt! In discussion with the staff at the ski hire station (whilst collecting our nice warm shoes) they too said the marking system in area was abysmal, and added that if they were to use the map alone, they would get lost themselves, and they live there! It’s not rocket science to number all the runs. The area is certainly not the most extensive in Europe, and if they gave each run a letter infront of the number, they could even indicate which town the runs were above. The blame stays right where it should. "Where there’s a will...." I could do, so I’m sure they could.

Samerberg Sue, and we did manage to find a couple of lost souls on our SkiWelt travels. Admittedly I found the piste map quite complicated as there's so much on it, but once out on the mountain I found it fairly easy to navigate my way around and I liked the way the lifts and corresponding pistes always had the same number. I even managed to get from the AlpenIglu at Hochbrixen back to the Brandstadl top station at Scheffau on the second day by myself without a piste map in less than half an hour using just piste signage.

Would have to echo what Sharon and Queen bodecia have been saying, while not completely disagreeing with Samberger Sue.
I was in the Ski Welt last week and the lifts/slopes/maps can certainly be a puzzle to the more jagermeistered of brains early in the morning. I myself have a very good sense of direction as did my companions, but we did have to stop at the top of a number of slopes trying to find out which was the slope we needed to take to reach our next destination. By mid week we had mastered it, but we encountered plenty people who were staring blankly at the extremely cluttered ski welt map at the top of nearly every slope.
All in all though, its only a minor thing, but can see how it could confuse people with ease, especially when weather conditions are not as bright and clear as they were last week.

Rebelski, On one of the days when low cloud descended, many didn't venture far from the cafe's and main lift. Without long distance vision, it wasn't worth the risk of getting stranded in such a vast area, when you could be going in the opposite direction to where you think you are! Scenery in the SkiWelt is breath taking, and the tree-lined runs are lovely to ski when snow is good, but other aspects just don't tick our boxes, so no re-visit planned for this area. I appreciate everyone has different expectations of their holiday, mine are quite high after saving for 12 months and only having 6 days on the snow...which pass so quickly

Rebelski, I have to agree with that. The system is a little confusing and I would also say that Samerberg Sue is right too though. There are signs at major junctions and at the top of each lift with town names on these signs as well as the piste numbers.
So to come back to the original question as to how easy is it to get back to Soll, in my experience, it's reasonably easy. Find out where you are, pick the runs/lifts you need to take and head for there. I've been there a good few times and you do have to stop sometimes (and that's ok) but I think the best way is to follow the signs and pick your level of piste. And you may have to use the map, it is actually quite good for giving you the number of the lift or piste that you want to get you home.
And to come right bact to topic of the snow report, has anyone seen this website - http://www.yr.no/place/Austria/Other/Söll/ ? It's from the Norwegian met institute and apparently provides very detailed weather reports under a free data policy. Can you locals keep an eye on it to let us know if it's accurate?
And finally, Sharon 1953, you should come back one more time and get Samerberg Sue, Espri and/or Heidiky to show you around. Guaranteed to change your mind.

Heavy snow forecast for Friday - Sunday night, although it's already changed twice today, so it could end up being a precipatory event whereby parrots fall from the sky, and they wouldn't be able to tell us until 20 mins before it happens.
Any reports from the frontline?

Just back from Zell to day...very slushy now down in lower slopes and they snow cannons have not been used apparently since January , we certainly did not see any in action ., having said that we had great skiing for the last few days but we would not be going off pistes anyway.Went over to Glacier yesterday and great snow there . Hope there is a good dump fairly soon.

Just been for a quick blast and in summary the pistes are in decent nik, compact in places with the odd spot of ice and certainly getting softer as the day goes on, but generally there is still some great fast carving to be done across the HK Region (the runs heading down into Mühlbach are holding up v well). The forecast (for what it is worth) seems to be indicating good snow fall for the start of next week which if it happens will be great, our local weather gru (who lives next door) and knows these mountains better than most, thinks we are in for a week or so of snow / sun and lower temps .. so fingers crossed.
This a random and un-related question but could anyone recommend a good corporate workwear firm in Austria which can do T-Shirts etc? Many thanks. Duncan : www.hauswasserbauer.com

When will this snow make it's mind up!
I checked yesterday afternoon and at the top lift at Kitzbühel it said 21cm of snow predicted over the coming weekend. Just checked again and it's saying 8cm. But the amount of snow predicted seems to be gradually decreasing every time I check.

kitenski,
www.snow-forecast.com and between Friday and Suday with something stupid like 13cm of snow to fall on Sunday night. Starting to question the reliability of that website though to be honest.
Do you know of anthing a little more reliable?
|
|
|
|
|
|
Leeds_Skier, the snow thread on here and learning to read the GFS reports. Basically you can ignore any prediction of depth, about the best you can hope for is the knowledge it will snow, how much will fall really cannot be predicted with any real precision I'm afraid.
+ anything over 3 days out is highly likely to change every 6 hours or so when the GFS models get refreshed.

sharon1953, Leeds_Skier,
Bergfex is "powered" by Zamg - an austrian weather institute. If you go one the ZamG webby they make a forecast for 3 days and a trend for a further two days....
Which backs up Kitenski's remarks about the frivolity of attaching yourself to those snow forecast depths over 3 days out!

Kersh, me too I've been using them for years now and found them pretty well on the ball. I use them all year round - skiing in winter and paragliding & sailing in the summer. Usually very accurate in the 3 day forecast and the trend as well.

One point to note with www.wetter.at is the 'skiwetter' forecast is for the top of the mountain so the predicted temps will be a lot lower than the valley. Same goes for the precipitation ... could be snow up top and rain in the valley. Just so you know.

northantsred, what to match the French No Snow to Report thread?
There is snow forecast and it is on its way. But even if it does not turn up the down turn in temperatures will mean that the slopes remain in good shape. Plus there is not the huge storm of people arriving as very few German or Austrian states have a Half Term break. Those that have, it is either gone or will take place at Fasching (week beginning 5th March). So the slopes will not suffer as much - take a look at some of the web cams for Salzburgerland if you don't believe those of us who actually live here!

Leeds_Skier, Didn't snow in Kitz!! But pistes are holding up well, don't worry. I think that the Horn closed last week because of no snow, so will probably only re-open if/when enough snow falls
