and it has been reported that China is going to loosen this peg

That was stated as fact in the opening pre-amble of Osbournes emergency budget.

Boredsurfing, Osbourne must be very well connested then because it is not in any Chinese statute or law and is just words at the moment, and the Chinese are already back tracking and playing it down a bit regarding timescales/extent etc

The Moneycorp weekly round up is (in my humble view ...) worth getting for a bit of insight into whats going on and possible emerging trends: http://www.moneycorp.com/headline_mail/EUR_MC.html . Looking at the figures this morning there is still a whole lot of volatility.

Wayne, actually after falling back a bit since the election the price has bottomed out and just turned back up through its 40 day average which might see it pick up a bit over the next few weeks
edit - back up over 1.2 today

Boredsurfing, pushed up largely by construction catching up from the fall in the previous (bad weather) quarter, but not too many schools and hospitals planned to be built in the near future iirc so I would not expect this to be a trend
The Euro is proving quite strong and it is the Dollar that has been on the slide recently. Sterling is up against the Euro and is flying against the $
actually it has all changed, the Euro is down on US and the £ i- nearly £1.20/Euro. £ up on $ which suggest a slide in the Euro. Maybe the bank stress data out in a few hours will show that Greece could not sustain a 3% drop in GDP and it will default on its loans

rayscoops, bank stress tests.. dont make me laugh , if they applied the same 'stress' test criterea to making planes they would let them build the wings out of wet cardboard boxes ..

You know it makes sense.
CANV CANVINGTON, no sovereign debt failure considered and only a mild recession so not the worst case scenario ! if we have the same recession as we have just had atleast 30% of the banks tested would probably fail without government intervention to save them

I may have found the best place to get cash € for £ in the UK:
The various Cambio windows on Oxford Street in London (I'd think the same would apply for Edinburgh etc too).
They obviously do 99% of their business buying €/selling £ and therefore their rates are VERY heavily skewed in that direction.
It suits them very well to sell you the € and the rate was very close to actual spot, no extra charges of any kind.
I got 1.193 a couple of days ago.

rungsp, thomas global on the strand, and bizarrely Lamberts souvenir shop on whitehall - all similar.

holidayloverxx, I second Thomas global - they've also got kiosks at Victoria and in the arcade near Liverpool Street - they all offer the same rate (or at least they claim to!). Tend to be within 0.5-0.75 of the spot price both ways in my experience.

rungsp, that's an amazing revelation. I always assumed those "Cambio Weasel" windows would be tourist trap ripoffs, like doing your forex in an airport.
paulio, you are entirely correct!
They do indeed rip off the tourists...but their loss is our gain (so long as your desire is the opposite of 99.9% of the other users).
