Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Marmalade must be so stoked to have got here for this

Yep! Great days yesterday and today. Thea has made amazing progress in just 2 days thanks to great conditions and a private lesson with ESI Bussoniere. Hoping to get her into a group lesson next week so she can mix with other children, but it will only be possible if we can get her up to Gold level in the next few days (no pressure then)!

snowangel., it would be good to do an apres-ski meet if possible.

Thankfully we're really happy that we chose to come here for a month - the risk of going somewhere new for a long break seems to have paid off. The ski area is really varied, the locals seem friendlier than in some french resorts and the accomodation is GREAT! I'd certainly recommend it:

nikimac, Sounds like you'll be staying near us. We'll still be here when you arrive so we may bump into each other.

Hey, all you Serre Che experts. On my way over on Saturdaay for a week in Villeneuve. That snow looks yummy......... Very Happy

Quick stupid question if any of you can help...... i hear you can get the 6 day Lift Pass at the office in the Aravet gondola; can anyone answer the following:

1. I hear they take a photo of you there so there is no need for a passport photo - is this true?
2. I presume the Lift Pass office willl take credit cards?
3. Does anyone know where the ATM's are in Villeneuve?

Thanks guys and see you in La Grotte for a couple between 1-6 Feb!!

lib-banana, just back. didn't manage to go off piste, infact i only managed to do 2 runs as i broke my binding on the first run, taped it up and managed 1 more with the family kids and their dad!

Another great day! Sun glorious.

lib-banana, Pistes are in great condition -standard of piste maintenance is much better here than in Tignes when we were there in December. No sign of fresh snow at the moment so off-piste is pretty tracked out but still powdery.

Still not skied down into Chantmerle as runs to resort have been closed (Luc Alphand closed for a competition, not sure why the green has been closed). Skied over to Briancon area today- stunning views and very peaceful. Not yet skied to Monetier area so might try that in next few days.

snowangel., Good to meet you. Hope to catch up with you again sometime (if the kids are in the right frame of mind! wink )

Music to my ears! The webcams look great and it even looks like some areas are not even completely tracked out yet - anyway the (not so) long range forecast for next Mon/Tues suggests the possibility of another 40+cm on Monday/Tuesday next week (and with no strong winds forecast)! hoping it comes true!

I think with all this great snow you may have just done exactly that! anyway we'l be there in a little over 24hrs - look forward to maybe seeing some of you folks during our week - look out for a boarder with red pants/black jacket and a very natty red and blue striped beanie with a nice blue pom pom! we're staying in chantemerle so maybe see you around there? snowangel, maybe see you in the lift ticket office!

which reminds me, we have 6 day tickets inc in th echalet price - but our flights mean that we also get a full day on the last staurday meanign we need a 7 day ticket - is it easier enought to add an extra day onto our 6 day tickets or do we just buy a day pass for the last saturday?

snowangel., good info to pass on to my guests. I had an email from the lift company today about Julian's accident. I had asked them to confirm what they were doing to improve safety, and how the skier's code was displayed in the resort, following discussions on here about reckless skiers and boarders.
They've even offered a meeting with the director of piste security. I was impressed they even bothered to reply.

Helen Beaumont, at chantemerle we have a new display board. it states safety's number one rule. Be in controll and be able to stop, and it is illustrated very nicely! So you'r requests are being heard. You are obviously not the only ones. If when you have the meeting you should maybe advise that they use the canadian policy of placing lifties on the entry to home runs (normally lower grades) to restrict speeding nutters!

BTW:

Today we decided to make use of the extras on our season lift passes so we went round the mountain to Puy St Vincent for the day. It was a nice quiet little place for a day out and seemed like a good place to go to get away from the weekend crowds. The area was quite small but there was a nice variety of runs in really great condition. There were also some safe off piste areas for kids and beginners to try powder and moguls. A couple of the drag lifts were pretty vicious which Thea struggled with and there were some really slow chair lifts, but I would recommend Puy St Vincent for a day out if you're in the area. The Etoile des Neiges restaurant was a nice place to eat on the mountain.

Weather sunny and cold again today. Some high cloud moving in so maybe a change is on the way.

snowangel., Just me being cynical!! I'm slightly grumpy due to ski boot problems and Ski Connections just phoned to say there aren't enough kids booked onto Thea's group for her lessons to go ahead tomorrow. Grrr!

Kim, I think I already know the answer to this, but thought I'd ask anyway in case they've changed it! Is there a group discount for ski passes on the Grand Galaxie? If so, is it for 10 persons... Happy

Just back for Serre Che, returned home in the very early hours of this morning after a lengthy blizzard impaired drive from London Stansted.

Anyway, here's what my thoughts of Serre Che/Villeneuve are:

We stayed at the Club Hotel Grand Aigle, I was a bit apprehensive before travelling having read a few reviews of the hotel but I found non of the negative comments to be of substance. The location of the hotel is fantastic, ski in/out is a real bonus. The hotel is half board, buffet breakfast, croissants, bread, cheese, meat, fruit and the usual cerial choices. Dinner is waiter service 3 course and you make your choice in the morning (vegetarian menu also available). We found the food to be delicious and never had cause for complaint, although the hotel is 2* rated the food is definitely above that standard. Our room was fairly small but it was warm and comfortable and there was always hot water. Be prepared for the odd interuption to your sleep as the walls are quite thin. We found all of the hotel staff to be helpful and friendly, the one thing that would have been nice would have been a later check out (9.30 out of room for 14.00 collection with very little to do in the town on a Sunday morning). You can keep the room on but this is €30.

Now the important part - the skiing....... OUT OF THIS WORLD! We've never had it so good, the conditions were fab, plenty of snow prior to arrival and then 5 days of perfectly clear blue skies. The variety of runs and quality of the piste is great, we particularly liked the area around Grand Alpe and Prorel, some really good runs from top to bottom. On the Wednesday we ski'd from Cucamelle all the way round to Chausee and back, I've never been so tired in my life but it was just too good of a day to miss!

(I'll avoid commenting on lift queue etiquette wink )

Apres - we didn't sample too much of this but the thing that struck me most was the cost of a pint €6+ in some places but beer isn't what we were there for.

All in all we had a great time and would certainly consider coming back. We want to tell our friends who ski all about how good the place is but don't want to tell too many people as for the time being Serre Che seems to be a very well kept secret.

Thanks to all you Serre Chevalians and enjoy your mountains you lucky lucky people.

First lift up this morning to find 6-12 inches of fresh powder. Spent the morning off-piste and with few takers, had the mountain (mainly) to ourselves. Pistes getting busier as the holidays get closer. Thursday could be promising with a large dump forcast. Very Happy
