Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Avoriaz/Chatel/Les Gets/Morzine 2014/2015

Hi, I have been watching this thread closely as I arrive in Avoriaz next Wednesday.
A couple of quick questions from the locals if I may .... How busy is next week likely to be? The next question, we have been offered a good deal at hotel dromonts, anybody got any views on it? I hear it has only just reopened.
Thanks
Mr Ted

I don't think it'll be particularly busy next week. Bookings are down because of recent conditions. Which are now improved immeasurably, with more snow forecast.

Can't help with your hotel but trip advisor doesn't generally lie....

@Nelbert75, When you say the red off Cornebois do you mean left as you come off the lift and then traverse across to the gulley (Perdrix Blanche)? I don't know what the conditions were like today (and to be honest I don't have the knowledge to assess them if I had been there) but the mountain above that run is known to slide sometimes and if you are in the gulley when it does you could easily end up under 10 metres worth. When I've asked pisteurs or instructors they have usually said closed for avalanche risk. it is a mighty fine run though!

@Mountain Addiction, wow! snowHead Laughing Echo most of what you said!

We found some very nice on piste conditions too this morning on all the ones you mentioned snowHead

We had a very quick look on Donkeys and traversed back on pretty sharpish as it was totally stripped and horrible!

Well I thought Chaux des Rosees was going to close at one point today as it was swinging fairly badly with us on it! It was blowing a hooley up there! Snow blowing everywhere and blowing us backwards at times!

At the top of there you made the right choice to turn left, we turned right to go and see friends who were training on Rennes and though the top half was in good condition the middle section was completely wind stripped and was sheet ice back to earth showing in parts Skullie To be fair the run was closed, we'd thought just due to the race training but obviously due to the conditions.

@Nelbert75, not sure if you know and apologies if you do but the closed red you mentioned is closed due to avi risk from the face above, it's often closed.

Yup Sarah it was left off the lift from Cornebois. I am reasonably avalanche aware, and was prepared. Good advice none the less, did have a word in the hut and a good look at the face. Obviously it's still a risk and worth pointing out - should others less aware be thinking of following.

Tried Morzine yesterday morning...yea, were down eating an early lunch at 11:30. Being daggered with snow on a chair just to pole down some link tracks as nothing else was open wasn't fun.

Went up Prodans in the afternoon and the run back to the bottom was quite nice - once through the white-out at the top station!

Today was sent around Chatel way and lovely skiing.

Anyone know what Morzine/Les Gets was like today and if enough is likely to be open tomorrow to make it worth the trip? Spent all week not getting high/to the other Swiss side of Avoriaz...

I spotted it at the beginning of the day when up Rochassons, I always look left to check Rennes it seems to catch the most wind out of all the pistes in Chatel. I could see the icy patches from Rochassons and thought to myself 'Think i'll give that a miss even it is open' turns out it wasn't so made the right choice at 10am for the ski I knew i'd be making at 3.30pm Very Happy

Are you sure?

Most of the reviews on there are self generated by the hotels in order to drive business.

Anyway, how is Les gets faring up today, has the snow started yet?

It's snowing like it means it in Les Gets after a day of quite pathetic rain. Has been snowing about an hour and we've got about a cm.

Am jealous of the 6yr old who gets to go out tomorrow morning whilst I look after his younger brother.

Not been in since the renovation, but it's the jewel in the crown of Avoriaz "old town", the original '60s bit. Small rooms but great "Barbarella" architecture and loads of history, celebrity guest photos etc. from the days of the film festival. And it's the only game in town if you want a proper hotel, the rest is all s/c apartments (and a few chalets). Unfortunately the thoroughly decadent "Roc Club" in the basement closed in the '90s, but there's still a good bar and restaurant. N.B. A friend ordered two coupes of champagne there last week - a nice round €50 was the bill Confused. Go for it, it will be memorable!

There's a thick, thick THICK layer of snow waiting to be skied this morning. IT's still dumping it down too snowHead

I've sent Mr Mountain Addiction out to do the snow clearing and dig the minibus out while I cook breakfast for some excited guests, needless to say he's been working harder than me! - there is a lot out there, nearly 20cms by the looks of it - and that's just out the front door at resort level!

25-30cm (depending on where I measure) at village level in Les Gets. Beautiful fluffy snow and there's no chance of me getting a proper ski in until Monday. WOE.

It's still coming down solidly.

Mr Mountain Addiction told me how I'd massively underestimated the amount - but it's hard to guess when you're at the stove cooking scrambled egg, bacon and pancakes for 10!

He told me there was at least 30 cms and there is definitely no sign of it letting up soon snowHead snowHead snowHead

It's 'A lot' given the difficulty all the resorts in the alps have had this year.

Given, by the standard of a 'normal' season (if there is such a thing) then this snowfall is pretty 'normal' in itself, but there hasn't been any significant dumps since 'that Saturday' at the end of Dec. I'm happy saying this is 'A lot' of snow, because that's what it feels like right now snowHead Lets not belittle it, Lets enjoy it snowHead

20 cms is good and will help but was skiing chatel on Thursday and was all a bit sad compared to good years. But still some good skiing to be had and with the freshers will be better. Needs a big one though in the next few weeks temps look interesting for next week.

It's a lot compared to how much we've had so far, which has lasted since 28/12 through warm temps, and there's more up the top. My measurements are from the Taninges end of the Rue du Centre. Anyway, still snowing solidly, it's forecast to snow again this week and stay below 0deg. I may be able to get off my rock hoppers this week.

I've just come down unfortunately due to child Sad

I have had only a few but real quality runs this morning snowHead

There is A LOT of snow up there snowHead snowHead And 'for the pleasure of everyone today the pistes are half groomed, half left natural' snowHead snowHead snowHead Big sign saying so at the top of Linga. And it was really, really quiet up there at 9.00 Very Happy

The snow is thick, fairly wet, heavy, sticky. Still great fun though!

Skied Combes and it was shin deep in places (and I've got long legs Laughing ) Had a quick play up and down Keyset getting the feel of my new skis and enjoying the snow with no one else there. Had Rochassons all to myself which is unheard of and had a couple of good runs down there. Sadly that was about it due to bad communication with the OH Mad

Mid morning it was getting busier and people were coming here from all over the place. Loads of ski clubs not that local to here. Several of the Swiss international schools. Loads of the Swiss ski schools.

It's still coming down hard. Just cleared at least a foot depth off the drive.
