zzz, why? Our contribution. Top spot that. I love the idea of a 7.2% IPA, but that's going to lead to so much trouble later.
And they had snow making in 1989. Just not much of it...

PS - try the black runs above the Grandes Combes lift. The mogul field one is a little brutal due to no new snow, but the one over the ridge at the top is absolutely lovely - snow was perfect, and just a handful of people on it.

I love that description - sums it up well.
Mt Chery was glorious today in the sunshine - pretty hard at 9.30 - finished off with a drink on the terrace at the Belvedere. Great smells when we were at the GO earlier on but really that hog roast will have to wait till we deserve all the calories.

Pamski, i was surpised to find quite a hard frost on the car this morning, which was nice, but I imagine anything south facing would have been rather crunchy!

Started off on Saturday in Champery. Upper slopes were fine. By about lunchtime the south facing slopes around Les Crosets were in a poor state. Over towards Avoriaz things were a lot better and everything seemed in good nick.
Heading back to the car at Champery was hard work for a beginner in our group, Planachaux in particular was more mud than snow.

Just spoke to my friend who arrived in Morzine yesterday. He said the skiing up top is ok, but down in resorts if awful. Had anyone got any pictures of the pistes from the last few days?

Ricklovesthepowder, Pleney is largely brown/green except for the man made pistes. All others closed. Think mid April and you won't be far wrong. I havn't skied in Les Gets for a week so can't comment but guessing it will be similar. My daughter was skiing in Avoriaz today and reported that the cover was ok but was icy everywhere.

I am not in Morzine till March so i have to start the snow dance

I can either go skiing in 2 weeks, or mid march. I think i will go for the mid march option!!!

Ricklovesthepowder, superal, we are going March too, and will be partaking in the snow dance. My hopes are that each year generally has the same snow fall. Not having it now means lots later This may or may not have substance to the theory, but its what Im hoping!

I got back from Morzine last night after a brilliant week staying with Coldfusion...
The consensus on here is spot on, Head up high in Avoriaz and you will be fine. Early on a lot of the shaded slopes can be icy, so just bear that in mind. The reds & blues in Plaine Dranse have been good all week, also the black (name escapes me) at the top of Grandes Combes was great yesterday afternoon. I spent most of my time in Lindarets, Plaine Dranse and Avoriaz without too many issues. Late on, there is slush about, so I would say start early, brave a bit of ice and finish early in a bar!
If you have to stay the Les Gets/Morzine side, the Pointe de Chery reds were in good nick as they are high, just take the bubble back down into town and you will be fine.
Enjoy!

The sky on the Avoriaz webcam certainly looks quite snowy. Good job, having seen the state of the hillside at Pleney from another webcam! Out a week wednesday so still time for a decent dump.

can i just add that the early conditions i had around champery, chamoussin, morgin, les crosets were lovely. There was absolutely NO ONE there either, we had some runs completely to ourselves, allowing for some lovely conditions for fast carving. If I were there for a week, it'd be first lifts, late lunch, download. South facing runs were decidedly interesting on the way back, great opportunity for practicing fast feet moguls.... although my thighs didn't really appreciate it.

The Rosta bowl was very good this morning - we were there about 9.45 - we are still able to ski down to the lifts in Les Gets from just up the road from our chalet, with absolutely no problems at all, the Violettes which is often not my cup of tea when chopped up, ridged and full of people was almost empty and fine - the red run on the Rosta was in good shape and as good as I have known it. Huge pile of snow on one side of the Tulipe. Then over to Charniaz, OH went up the Chamossiere, both the red and black open there, and I went on to Nyon and coffee. Only open on Nyon chairlift up to half way and we seemed to be surrounded by Russians at that point. There were no queues anywhere we went today. Down the Chamois a few times, and up the lift by the bridge. Run down to it says closed but very easy to access it and much better than going over the bridge where I was nearly mown down by a huge great lump of a man who seemed totally out of control. I was going at the speed of the person in front of me at the time. Back towards Les Gets and a quick vin chaud and a shared Panini at the top of the Charniaz Express - La Cabashe just on the right - oh dear where as 5:2 gone for today - and we were talking to a guy who is staying with lots of friends and kids with Ski Famille in Les Gets. Sadly it seems that the standard has dropped this year under the new management - I think he should know as he has stayed with them for 5 years. It was snowing up there at that stage and is now raining a little here - 3C.

We've just come down from Avoriaz. Light snow up there is now heavy rain in Morzine.
Best condition run in Morzine/LG is Melezes. Mint and empty.
Linderettes was nice this morning. Anything low is closed or a mess. Some runs are open but almost unskiable.
Hope the rain turns to snow.

It is but sadly only after the front has passed so will be in the form of light showers. Cham met predicting 15-25cm at 1500m. Raining and +4c at 1000m

It's raining up to about 1500m in LG but this is a GOOD thing. We need it to rain, freeze, then snow. Lots, lots of snow Was about 2deg in resort, 0 where I live which is about 1200m.

jackmate, I assume a frozen ice base (created by the rain on/in the ground freezing) is better that soft fluffy snow directly on grass... but i might be wrong!

jackmate, dunno really but a ski instructor just told me so it must be true, right?
I think it's to do with the hope that it will freeze the ground and help the snow last longer. But I really don't know. I'm more going with the 'it's raining, I'm going to find a way for this to be a good thing' mind set rather than anything based on knowledge, or facts, or stuff like that.

The temps will need to be minus double figures for quite some time to freeze wet ground.
I can't see any way that rain in a ski resort can be considered a good thing. It's just melting the existing base.
Off shopping then to the Haka.

Visibility really poor high up this afternoon.

Harry Flashman, I suspect it's raining in Cham town and snowing in Avoriaz. All a question of altitude. PDS often gets more snow during a fall than Chamonix at the same height.
